Polygamist Warren Jeffs taken to Vegas hospital

Jailed polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was taken to a hospital in Las Vegas on Tuesday, but police would not say why.

Las Vegas police Officer Jose Montoya said Jeffs was taken from an Arizona jail to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

"I can't tell you why he was brought here or what his condition is," he said.

He referred questions to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office in Arizona. A call to the sheriff's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

The jail, in Kingman, Arizona, is about 100 miles from the medical center.

Jeffs, 52, is the leader of the estimated 10,000-member Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is awaiting trial on 10 felony charges - five counts of sexual conduct with a minor, four counts of incest and one count of conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor...

There's only one way to describe these pictures of Jeffs. They are disturbing. I'm sure that's the reaction the attorneys for Texas child protective services was going for when they showed them to the court. The state later successfully retained custody of one of two babies born to FLDS mothers while in foster care.

According to testimony, one of the girls seen kissing Jeffs was the baby's aunt, lived in the same home with the parents and was only 13. The state provided no context for the photos–we don't know why they were taken or where authorities found them. But, it's clear, these pictures had an impact on this hearing and proved to be an effective weapon for the state when they try to prove the existence of a pervasive pattern of abuse at the Yearning for Zion Ranch.

The pictures are of Warren Jeffs and 2 minors...

These pictures were entered into evidence on Friday for the Jessops custody hearing but also released to the media...

Here is what we know about one of the girls in the photos

  • Lived on the YFZ Ranch in the same building with the Jessops
  • Is a minor
  • Was supposed to testify in the Jessop's custody case, or called as a witness, but the two parties reached an agreement before that happened

Dispatch from FLDS hearing: Underage mothers and Warren Jeffs’ children

From a pool reporter inside the courtroom
Update from Courtroom A

Case #1
1 year old boy
Mother: 17 ½ years old

Attorneys asked for a continuance because the mother, who is a minor, has not been able to meet with her attorneys because she is 8 months pregnant and located in a shelter in San Antonio. The judge granted the continuance and the hearing will now be held 6/3. Attorneys expressed concern that they are not able to have private conversations, that social workers are taking notes on phone conversations.

Case #2
9 ½ year old child

Father: Warren Steed Jeffs (incarcerated)

Highlights: The attorney asked which version of the Book of Mormon the children were given (new version of Book of Mormon condems polygamy). CPS worker Irene Schwaninger "Polygamy is not the issue, underage marriage is the issue here." Mother has signed CPS plan.

Searching for Warren Jeffs’ Words

Among the many restrictions on members of the FLDS polygamist sect, one of the most severe is on music. Warren Jeffs, the church's self-proclaimed prophet who is now in jail, imposed a total ban on popular music.

But Jeffs penned and recorded many of his own songs with church members. Over the years we’ve gotten hold of about 12 of these songs and often played parts of them during our news coverage. Hearing the words and often the voice of Jeffs on these low-tech recordings is creepy. But you can’t help but be drawn in. It is like peering through a keyhole and getting a glimpse of the old-fashioned obeying, orderly, and devoted world on the other side.

When news of the raid on the YFZ ranch began to break, one of the first details we learned was that the name of ranch came from a song written by Jeffs called “Yearning for Zion.” Naturally, we wanted to find the song—and that became my mission. FULL POST

Today, I’m writing this blog from a small hotel room not far from the FLDS community of Colorado City, AZ. Gary Tuchman, photojournalist Steve Coppin and I flew into Las Vegas last night and took a 2 -hour drive north to St. George, Utah where we stayed the night before driving another hour to Colorado City, AZ., home to the FLDS, which practices polygamy.

We came here to interview former and current members of the community about the conviction of their prophet, Warren Jeffs last week in Texas. Jeffs was convicted of 2 counts of sexual assault of 2 girls, 12 and 15 and sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years. We wanted to find out what the community here thought of the trial and what their reaction was to the news that Jeffs would be in prison for the rest of his life.
