Who is Gloria Allred?

Editor's Note: Tune in at 8 p.m. ET for an in-depth look at the women accusing Herman Cain of harassment.

This profile of Gloria Allred was written in October 2010 and updated November 7 to include her representation of Sharon Bialek.

Los Angeles (CNN) - Her clients include mistresses, starlets and allegedly wronged women from all walks of life. So, when Gloria Allred calls a news conference, media types know they're about to hear some dish.

So it was on Monday, when Allred stepped in front of the cameras at the Friar's Club in New York City and presented client Sharon Bialek.

Bialek, a former manager with the National Restaurant Association and a registered Republican, described in graphic detail how GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain sexually groped her in 1997 when she sought his help in finding a job.

Bialek, a single mother from Chicago, said she was coming forward to provide a public face to sexual harassment claims against Cain from three other women.

Video: Herman Cain meets Washington's 'scandal industrial complex'

Editor's note: Ari Fleischer joins the AC360° political panel tonight. Tune in at 8 p.m. ET.

CNN)- If Herman Cain committed sexual harassment and is now lying about it, his goose is cooked and it should be. But if he is telling the truth, there is something terribly disconcerting about the way the Washington "scandal industrial complex" - full of reporters, former campaign workers and pundits - has reacted to this sad story.

After the story broke in Politico, Cain the next day denied that he sexually harassed anyone, which after all, is the core issue. Since then, other anonymous sources claim they too were harassed, without anyone really knowing what the alleged harassment entailed. He has been consistent, unwavering and on the record in his denial.

But that's not good enough for the way things work in Washington, where the manner in which he reacted to the news is said to be a sign of whether he would make a good president. He is being assailed because he remembered more information and therefore "his story changed," an unforgivable development for those who cover scandal news.

Cain must give straight answers, and fast

(CNN) - Herman Cain may very well bounce back and remain a popular contender for the GOP presidential nomination, but the normal rules of politics would say that he has about 48 hours to get his campaign under control.

As he struggles with the allegations swirling around him, it is worth remembering that so far, there is no hard evidence that he has done anything wrong. It is also worth recalling that in sexual harassment cases, perceptions of men and women can differ and lines can be blurry. That was especially true in the 1990s when the alleged events took place. He deserves the benefit of the doubt until we know more.

His fortunes have been bolstered as well by the way conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter have rushed to his defense. Limbaugh has sparked a familiar cry among tea partiers about "liberal media witch hunts." On Wednesday, Politico - the news organization that broke the story - reported that voters in Iowa aren't paying much attention: Cain still rides high there.
