Anderson, as a gay (and married) Arizonan, I would like to point out a few things that may not have drawn your attention. One is HB2481 also sponsored by Sen. Pearce. The Arizona's First Freedom bill would make it unlawful to require a church or clergy to solemnize a union not in accordance with their beliefs. Not that they are required to do so under current law, nor would they be required should Arizona accept a broader definition of marriage. Second is that the current legislation (SB1062/HB2053) would in effect overrule ordinances passed by cities affording protections for LGBT persons. Tucson has had such an ordnance since 1978. All the legislation amounts to is law awaiting a problem. The law is generally reactive, no proactive. So don't our legislators have better things to do? Apparently not. Until such time as gerrymandering is overcome, our state will likely continue to be racing towards the top of the field in legislation that is not worth the paper it is printed on. Thank you for the attention you have brought to this matter in a thoughtful, civil fashion.
