Death and devastation after Typhoon Haiyan
For so many people in the Philippines right now, surviving the Typhoon Haiyan was just the beginning of a nightmare. Busy cities like Tacloban are now completely devastated. In hard hit areas across the Philippines, there is not enough water, food, or medical supplies to go around. Anderson takes a look at the situation that is now being described as "worse than hell."

I want to thank Anderson Cooper for his reporting from the Philippines. He showed compassion and explained the magnitude of the disaster in Tacloban. As an American with a Filipina fiancée, I was extremely concerned about the plight of the people there. The Philippine people are warm, loving and resilient. Anderson made a point of demonstrating that to his viewers.

CNN and Mr Cooper, thank you for the accurate coverage of the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan. I have read in the blogs of Filipinos there that the relief goods are being repacked by politicians and putting their seal on it as if it came from their own pockets. It could be why there was a delay in the distribution of the goods. All the bureaucracy was intended to support corruption. Politicians had to order stickers, and bags with their names on it and using it as if they're campaigning for the elections. Also the canned goods donated, which is highly desirable there, were being switched to locally unmarked canned goods. The crates, sacks of donations are being distributed in small bags with 1 water bottle per person. Please expose these inhumane creatures.
The Filipinos that defend these politicians are the people that benefit from the corrupt government officials. I believe that Pres Aquino's intentions of ridding the government of corruption is sincere. But he may not be surrounded by people who feels the same way and maybe getting bad advise. The corruption is now so engrained among it's people. But this is because they, the little people, need to survive. Please help the helpless citizens of the Philippines. It has been so frustrating listening to the local news.
We hope and pray they are all save inspite of it. We are very much thankful Mr. Cooper if you can give an information to us that they are alive. Ense Petring is older enough to survive that Super Typhoon but we still had hope that she is save including her family in Palo, Leyte.
Please cover the corruption in the Philippines. That plays a huge part on why the government isn't capable of providing a decent response to calamities - and, of course, on the welfare of the country. Thank you!
Dear Anderson cooper, My wife is Filipino and her family is from Ormoc, We first heard from her mother yesterday she is fine and in good health. She has lost her home but has found shelter with relatives, They went to get relief rations which consisted of 1 1/2 kilos of rice, 2 cans of sardines, and 2 packages of noodles. for most Americans 1 1/2 kilos of rice would last a year but Asians eat rice like no one business. My mother in law said the rice she got and the rice her Brgy was getting is not eatable. It will be a shame if 5000 people die from storm and 20,000 die from relief efforts. But it is like most everything else, we will here later from the news people. what went wrong? who's fault is it? how can we prevent this from happening again? I hope you can help by saying something to someone.
The military and other rescue say they don't have gas to get help to people, why doesn't the military do what they did in Iraq, have helicopter fly in giant fuel bags to forward positions, so trucks can refuel, and move forward to help those people in need, clear areas for helicopters, establish a base to move forward, drop in water and purifiers, they can do this with helicopters, and set up refugee camps in Cebu and Leyte, fly those people out, SAVE THEM,

One thing that is very different about the Philippines ...that you don't see in very many countries in the world...is how they put politicians on a high pedestal. They look at them as celebrities. They worship them even if they have stolen millions (or even billions) of dollars from the people. This is a very dangerous precedent that I've never seen anywhere else in the world. And it more than likely explains why they remain in poverty.
You are correct, James. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and other countries have made the most of U.S. aid and investments in their countries. The Philippines remains mired in corruption and poverty. I witnessed it first-hand 52 years ago while a member of the U.S. Navy Shore Patrol on Luzon for almost two years, and it hasn't changed since then. It appears to be an accepted way of life by many Filipinos, as evidenced by the number of entries in these blogs defending the leaders of the country in their almost criminal neglect of the people of Leyte and Samar after Typhoon Yolande.
i agree but i must say that those kind of foolish people were reduced over the past few years. we're now much more aware as to what treatment these corrupt officials really deserves..
thank you mr. Anderson, you help a lot to lessen the burden having by victims of typhoon, you push authorities to move fast by showing current and real situation happens there...
Totally disagreed w/you Mr.Gerrie Richardson... truth is truth... that heartache&pain of the man talking to his mom over Mr. Cooper's studio phone is the cry of all's #Yolandas victim... that should be heared loud&clear & as what it is... just like dead bodies everywhere..shld be covered yet must capture by camera... Indeed journalist are there @the real&exact place of the event to show to the world the reality..honesty of what took place..its beforehand..existences & the aftermath... w/o reservation/witholding...
We are appreciative of what CNN and Anderson are doing for the Philippines. They are just presenting an unbiased opinion about what is going on in the country. It is real and I believe showing raw emotions is not embarassing. That man who talked to his mother on the phone would not be embarassed about that. He would not even be thinking about that – his family is dead for goodness sake!
Cheers to Anderson. In Tagalog... Mabuhay! I believe your professionalism executed a sense of justice in defense of helpless human beings. It demanded attention and you gave it just as it is. I believe Nonoy Aquino is honest, DSWD Dinky Soliman is doing her best however, there is leadership scarcity. An immediate need to draw that presidential power when they lacked the backup plan in their model of "local government units as first responders" and then the responders became victims. It is easily to give this excuse. If only Aquino and Roxas mobilized to pay local shipping lines ...innovate using barges pulled by bancas(dinghy) to reach the coast together with the Coast Guards... just maybe it would have worked. I believe marine transport is the most effective way to distribute rellief goods because the Philippines is largely a coastal area.
Blessing in disguise we always say in the PHilippines..... I can say Yolandas' aftermath blessing is CNN and Anderson Cooper. Letting the entire world know how government officials manipulate their people for personal gain.
Please look into government officials trying to OWN the relief goods by putting their name on it... these tragedy is swamped with people looking into making their names known for 2016 coming election. This is so SAD!!!
I am hoping with anderson cooper and the rest of CNN crew in the Philippines will expose how massive graft and corruption is. Pork Barrel issue will be exposed and the people behind it worldwide!!! ABS CBN cannot manipulate the people in knowing the truth with their one sided news. Their politically motivated news.
TAXING RELIEF DONATIONS:
I have been notified by friends in the Philippines that there are Germans in Manila who have brought relief aids in their own trucks through Lufthansa but cannot start their journey to Tacloban because the Philippine government wants to tax them.
Though I cant be there to help, I lift my prayers for all the survivors, and all the helpers, including Mr. cooper and crew, pray that help will be there. pray for Gods love and mercy. we don't know all, but our faith must remain. Hope in times likes this is so much needed. May God bless you all.
THIS IS A PLEA. PLEASE COVER HERNANI, EASTERN SAMAR where the first landfall happened. My 87 years old grandfather is there together with other survivors. THEY HAVE BEEN HUNGRY FOR 5 DAYS. NO RELIEF GOODS ON SIGHT. SOME SMALL ISLANDS NEAR HERNANI HAVE BEEN TOTALLY WASHED OFF, ZERO SURVIVORS. PLEASE MR.COOPER. WE BEG YOU.
Mr. Cooper, please help. The Philippines, particularly the island of Leyte, is in terrible shape right now. My government is not doing a good job with regards to handling the situation. There are a lot of people starving and it seems that relief goods are not being distributed fairly. I think you already know the situation here and I am requesting for help, in whatever way you can, for someone to step in. I think my government needs intervention now. Thank you very much.

That poor man that called his mom using Andersons phone SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PUT OUT LIVE LIKE THEY DID. It was nice to let him call his mom but to put his heart ache and pain talking to his mom was shameful Anderson Copoper.
