Regarding the individual mandate – I don't know why it's so hard to understand why everyone has to participate. What if car insurance was optional – you just got it if you felt like it? It wouldn't work. Everyone's car has to be covered - jalopy or brand new – at least at a basic level or you face criminal prosecution. It's the law. The cost of potential damage done by an un-insured car is just too high for a person, family or society to absorb. It's the same with the Affordable Care Act. Everyone has to be covered, regardless of age, heathy or not. The cost of potential illness & injury of an un-insured person is just too high for a person, family or society to absorb.
