Players who want a spot on Utah's Union High School football team need to do more than just prove themselves on the field. Coach Matt Labrum made it clear that poor grades, cutting class, disrespecting teachers and fellow students is not acceptable. When he had enough of the behavior of his players, he suspended the entire team. He discussed this drastic action with Anderson.

This guy sounds like the ideal candidate to clean up the toxic waste dump that is the Steubenville football program. It's encouraging that he appears to have the support of the parents and the community. Too many places in this country would have run this coach out of town because he denied them their football fix.
I think the coach did the right thing! There is so much bullying in high school, and has always been, but now kids are actually killing themselves for kids being so cruel they don't even want to live. Back when I was in high school football players were looked up to and very popular. How they treat another student MAKES A DIFFERENCE! I wish all teachers and faculty staff members would take bullying and harassment more seriously then just kids will be kids.
Middle/High School sports are a privilege, not a right. And if parents are not going to teach their kids right from wrong, respect, and that education comes first, then the coaches need to step in. As a "football-mom" of 3 players, I don't think the coaches have enough power. In our district, grades need to be kept at a specific GPA in order to play sports, and if they can't keep their grades up, or even attend class, then they should be suspended.
Few coaches if any have the courage to do this, and those that do don't have the backing of bosses or parents...kudos to this coach, school and parents....These young men will turn out amazing....
Kids do not have to probe anything to anybody. There was a time that you join sports to have fun and friends. Now a days they are so commercialized that, coaches have to punish the teams? I thought I never see the day when a kid has to be punish to play well. More so, I think that coaches have too much power over the kids. Why everything has to be money?
