Has anyone considered the fact, Russia would want to have involvement in diplomatic relations as opposed to having the US and its allies apply force. With the US using force and being physically in Syria, they will have access to any documentation that may expose how much Russia's involvement has been in providing these weapons in Syria. I see Putton as not wanting any US military on Syrian soil.
