The diplomatic initiative with respect to Syria and al Assad is going to play out (for better or for worse), but in the end, I am unable to put the horrifying images and videos of dead and dying, Syrian men, women, and children out of mind. Do we, as a modern, international community allow these crimes (can't these be referred to as "crimes against humanity"?) to go unpunished? Does this regime get a[nother] "pass"? They have broken international law. They are culpable. We cannot allow this and every previous crime to go without holding this man, his terrifyingly powerful family, and his regime responsible.
I could now support a strike if the diplomacy fails.
I fully support Obama. Whether we like it or not he gives each of us the opportunity to weigh in on the decision. He is a very intelligent and strategic planner. I trust his judgement in regards to how to handle SyriA. He is forcing by in and accountability on all decisions by both the international community as well.as all Americans. And not let America be the lone ranger in this .
So disappointing to see big lower-third pop-up of animated Anthony Bourdain promo over President Obama speech except. Really?! Is the booth asleep at the wheel? Please refrain from promos for entertainment programming over such serious content!
Tonight's 10PM AC360 panel with Christiane Amanpour, Fareed Zakharia, Andrew Sullivan and Anne Marie Slaugther was some of the most informative and compelling television I have seen in YEARS! Authentic, real and charged with passion. This format and panel should be a permanent show (with Anderson of course)! Their experience points of view and skill all came out. Thank You!
Why does Chistian Amanpoor pushing the Americans to strike the Syrians when she knows very well that the majority of Americans are against getting involved in another war.
President Obama, do NOT engage in any strikes against Syria. Safeguard our military and our economy. That is your duty as the President of this great country.
How is a "credible" threat when it was obvious that the American people were against the strike in Syria and that the Congress would not pass the legislation to authorize the President the authority to act. Let's be honest, Putin threw Obama a bone to save face. Nothing will change but our international "face" has once again been weakened by bad policy. The USA does not, in any circumstance, need to be involved in a civil war that does not have an "immediate" threat to our interests. It has not be an immediate threat when Assad used these weapons before, it has not been an immediate threat when 100,000 people were slaughtered by conventional weapons. Its still not an immediate threat now. Obama just put himself in a box and Putin is giving him a way out and Obama is hoping that the media supports him, then puts it in the back burner when nothing gets done. Why would Assad weaken his position by giving up this weapons?
He won't and Russia has no interest in weakening Assad.
The question is not should there be action but why has there not been action 14 incidents ago. What does it say about us as a people - that we turn a blind eye to such goings on? Shame on England! Please people of the United States- don't justify indifference. Don't coward from making a stand for humanity!
How can you only talk about the chemical weapons in Syria ,Its been known that the Hezbollah have been given chemical weapons by Syria ?Please let me know your thoughts,Thanks
I just hope that Obama is not making a deal with the Devil. We know that we cant trust Russia or Syria.
Christiane – the President couldn't convince the Congress, a single ally, or the American people to participate in a strike, and yet your shrill shouting down of others about a show of force leading to a diplomatic solution is ludicrous, and is a disparate Whitehouse talking point. This is insulting to any thinking person's intelligence. I hope your martini parties after Obama's leave office are fun!
I think most Americans are or will be persuaded to approve a military strike. My concern is the rebels. No one knows how many terrorists are within in their ranks. What will happen I am afraid will be worse then Asssad.
Did not John Kerry go either purposely or not go off of script and suggest disarmament and a Russian Diplomat ran with the suggestion; if so should this not be called the (John) Kerry Initiative.
The president used the "save the children" argument children too much. That's reserved for people who don't have an argument. And I can't take any chemical weapon "red line" seriously from a country that used agent orange and the atomic bomb that killed many a child and civilian. We've lost our moral ground on this issue.
Have we given any credit to the pope who mad Saturday a day of fast and prayer for this peaceful resolution?
Maybe we should?
Why are the arab countries not particpating in the military response. It should not fall on the USA, France and UK. the arab countries need to help out with a military response, not by just allowing the use of bases or air space.
What great country we have and a very smart President most American felt to realised Mr obama was thrown to a mess where we was already @ war and with Syria acting the way they are l think we should take a bigger synction against them don't like the whole idea with Russia Iran n North Korea are not to be trusted Mr President l am with you all the way
You need to remind people that it was members of Congress who told the President he should bring the issue to them. This was a case of "be careful what you ask for".
As a 25 year old American woman who remembers 9/11 along with the days and years that followed. I am sick of war just like everyone else. But in this case regarding Syria. I do not believe we as human beings can sit back and allow a government of another country to kill its own people. If they are capable of doing that then they are capable of doing anything to anyone. They have killed men woman and children for no reason. So we humans have a responsibility to stop these terrible crimes from happening to anyone ever again.
I just listened to the Presidents address. It comes down to who you trust after seeing the videos. I trust the Presidenys over Putin or Assad.
Dear Anderson: I personally believe that Syria is not the "Big Problem". Iran is (and will be very soon) is THE more critical Issue at hand! Iran WILL have Nuclear capabilities and possibility a mobile Nuclear Bomb in President Obamas Administration weather he likes it or not OR weather we like it or not. When this is discovered...Congress and our Senate won't have the time to "hee haw" around to arrive at a immediate decision that must be made quickly! If we can't control and immediately handle Syria Issue...What are we going to do when we discover that Iran has Nuclear Bombs aimed at us or our Allies?
I can not understand why the address to the nation was on the eve of Sept 11th. Nothing wrong with the 12th let alone speaking about another war
Did Obama say yes or no to the opportunity of actual war breaking out between other countries? All I got from that answer was 'No boots on the ground in Syria'.
Having Newt call the President a liar doesn't improve the newsworthiness of reporting on a just completed speech. If you must have Newt, use him in Crossfire, but not after a speech.
Now would be the time to call upon ALL Nations to destroy their chemical weapons following agreements of most countries to destroy their Nuclear weapons. Give whoever the credit that came up with the political solution of having Syria give control of their chemicals and have U.S to demand the rest of the world to do the same. Thanks for letting me give my opinion.
I'm watching the President's speech now and he still maintains that Assad's troops fired those chemical weapons. Yet, I watched a video on You Tube when the al – Nusra Front tested Sarin on two rabbits that dropped down dead in ninety seconds, and sixteen Syrian soldiers were killed by Sarin gas fired by the al – Nusra Front in Aleppo last March. As well, twelve " freedom fighters " al – Nusra Front were arrested in Turkey several months ago in possession of two canisters filled with four lites of Sarin gas. Think people, the al – nusra Front/al – Qaida have chemical weapons too, they used them on august the 21st, not the Syrian Army...
president should make a deal with Russia that they go in with there army and UN inspectors and retrieve the chemical weapons and that should tell the world where the true and liar e stand.
