Very interesting demonstration. Thank you for putting it together. It helps us "passengers" understand better just some of what is happening behind those steel doors (used to be able to say "behind the curtain").
Reading a pilot's comment on here I must say I do not get WHY all operations are not functioning ALL the time to assist pilots and create a much safer landing. PAPI and ILS, why do they not operate and can this be remedied?
There are multiple aids to landing and these are some of the first things a new pilot in training learns. If you notice the large solid white lines on the runway about parallel with the PAPI this the targeted landing area if following the ILS, the PAPI of just visually hand flying. Notice how far it is from the end of the runway? On a VFR day such as that day even without the ILS and PAPI the pilots still have the runway landing picture and the target stripes to aim for. This is basic beginner pilot stuff that for some reason these guys missed. They would have had the visual clues from way, way out that they were too low. This is why everyone is scratching their heads how something like this could have happened.
As far as the ILS being out you would want to use that on a sunny day anyway. It is a tool for getting down in the clouds and would only slow up the works when trying to get a bunch of planes on the ground on a clear sunny day.
I am a pilot and I flew into SFO multiple times in days prior to this accident. In addition to the ILS being out of service, the PAPI lights on the 28's, as illustrated in this video, have been out as well. If that were the case on the day of the crash, the pilots of the Asiana crash did not have the benefit of using the PAPI to aid them in a visual approach. Those lights have been out of service for many weeks–were they for operational the day of the crash?
Previously submitted the wrong name for Angela Corey. My question was why was she allowed to have an open laptop computer in the courtroom? Normally, newspapers are not allowed during the trial. I suspect she was e-mailing or giving her subordinates some instructions on how to try the case.
