Jeffry Life, age 74, uses performance enhancing drugs that are similar to the ones used by athletes like Lance Armstrong. The physical results are easy to see, but he says the rock hard body isn't the only effect. Life claims his mind is sharp and he feels like a man half his age.
"I'm not against aging. I'm against getting old," he tells CNN's Kyung Lah. Life uses testosterone and human growth hormone (HGH) accompanied by a daily fitness regimen and a low-carb diet. The physician considers himself a trailblazer for others who want a better quality of life in old age.
The FDA regulates the use of HGH and has not approved it for anti-aging purposes. Watch Lah's report to see how Life's company, Cenegenics, has found a "natural loophole" to give their patients HGH, and why some critics don't support their use of hormones as a fountain of youth.

At 70, I'm not that far away from being in similar condition but without hormones or other similar supplements. I think it's more about eating right and exercise. Eat like you want to be the right weight and exercise like you want to be fit. I go to the gym for strength training three days a week and work hard at it. Getting rid of the wheat and refined sugars took care of the weight. As we age we don't have to look old nor do we have to look like Schwarzenegger...but you can't get fit sitting around thinking about it. Do the work and the fitness will follow...it's as simple as that.
I am 63 and have had the unfortunate luck to have had to work hard all my life. I still do physical labor every day, I weigh 10 pounds more than I weighed when I got out of the service. I guess I should say that I felt sorry for myself and thought I was unfortunate until 2008 when I went to my high school reunion, 40 years. I have never seen so many old, fat, and sick people in my life. If I get to looking and feeling like my high school friends I will be headed to this doctors office to let him help me stay in shape. My wife still wears the same size dress she wore to our wedding too.
He doesn't look healthy. He looks like somebody who's on hormones (those veins(!) - I don't mind his idea of not getting old but come on. It's scary whose drugs he's taking. Hope he doesn't have a heart attack in the weight room.
Actually the veins are like that because he formed his mucles the hard way, exercising and weight lifting, lrger muscles need larger blood supply. Where as muscles formed due to drugs use only have the same size veins as a the person "normally" would......also being he is physican, he on a daily basis, weighs the benefits and risk of all decisions he make sin his patients care, I believe he is educated enough to know how to achieve what he wants with mimimual risk. He is wanting to live his life to the fullest I dont believe he would chose to do something to jepordize it.
HGH is the future. If you are 74+ and someone offers you something to make you look and feel younger, why not? You say it will shorten your life? If I am 74, who cares. Really? They are already within a few years of dying so let them do whatever they want, they got to have tons of money to do this program anyway. Very expensive from what I hear. I'm 46, work out 4 to 5 times a week, eat right and feel like I'm 30, will continue this until I'm older and hopefully by the time I'm mid 50's there will be even better stuff out there.
Who wants to look old,if you can afford to stay young looking as long as you can ,why not,who cares how you do it,look at all the people having plastic surgery to look young.
I agree! But it's not really about just looking younger;it's about feeling younger and being able to do things younger people can do and old people cannot. In effect these people ARE younger as their skeletal, muscular and organic systems have 'aged' at a slower rate and function years younger than their life age.
I dont' mind getting or looking old, I just want to stay healthy. If the doctor can help me with that I am willing.
What is interesting is that Dr. Life definitely looks his age. Just look at his face. Any man with his body type (endomorphic
mesomoprh) who lifts weights will bulk out and with the right diet will have a lean frame at any age.
There is nothing age defying about him, he is just a lean, fit 74 year old who focus's on developing his muscles.
The title of the story is completely wrong but it does get people to click on it which is what they are trying to do
That is the appearance on the outside. How do you know what he feels on the inside? I bet he feels much younger than his actual age.
Who says the hormones are needed at all. My dad is 88, walks, bikes, boats, skies, dances, has a young wife and takes no hormones. Is mind is going however. Are hormones going to help that?
Any 1st year medical student will tell you that the use of growth hormone will make a person look and feel younger, but it will also reduce the life expectancy of that person.
But at 65+ your looking at balancing the improved quality of life with HGH vs a longer life with less quality.
matt...agreed. this guy is 74yo already. how many good years does he honestly have left in him? wouldnt you rather live life to the fullest and continue looking great (in your eyes, if this buffed style works for you) and just drop dead one day vs. growing old and having to live in a retirement home forgetting little by little day after day? i dont consider this a legal hormone to use in sports, however by prolonging life in a positive way, then by all means, advertise.
Funny you say "any 1st yr medical student can tell you HGH will reduce life expectancy"...My doctor prescribed it as I am growth deficient and I am 100% positive he would have divulged it as a medical necessity if that were true..... don't say that which you have no qualifications to back up!!!
We can give growth hormones to our crops/livestock and that is perfectly fine, but we can't use it on old people who are near the edge of life anyways? I'd rather die with a healthy body enjoying life than in a nursing home struggling to get around with a walker smelling like dusty farts.
It's wonderful that this gentleman is taking care of himself and feeling young well into his golden years. However, how much of his limited time is spent maintaining his body and shilling for human growth hormone? Also, as far as I'm aware, he still has 74 year-old organs, and those make up the engine that keeps the car running, so to speak. It seems all just a bit superficial.
Natural cave man diet with some amino acid supplements is a lot safer and just as effective. Also, full body gravity exercises are better than using weights, which put too much of the wrong type of stress on the joints.
Bro science at it's finest.
I think that this is great no matter what the cost. Who wants to wither away on the vine when they can remain active and strong both mentally and physically. I say it's the quality of life not the quantity.
Great story – go for it. Congrats to all seniors and everyone who feels it's important to invest time, and money into your own personal health!!!
Turing 50 year year, began a supplement and exercise route 14 months ago. In the best shape of my life. Feel great, high energy, look at least 10 years younger.
Many who complaining about the "cost barrier", spend their $1000 a month on cigarettes and alcohol and pizza. It's a free world, we will all die. We can have our last years feeling and looking good, our out od shape, out of breath sitting on the couch.
Biologist here and I work in as a wildlife inventory biologist. When I hear reports such as this I think back to the 70s and college classes that were concerned about overpopulation. I think that this is still something to be concerned about. I understand the various social impacts of not having kids, and I understand that an ideal situation in some respects is a zero rate of population growth. But at what level of population do you want things to stabilize at? Imagine if population were to decrease world wide and stabilize at levels that are closer to the late 40s and early 50s. Imagine what various popular places would look like with 1/3 to 1/2 less people?
This is not as simple as "ooh oooh, our population rate is less than replacement. THATS BAD" . Is there a federal policy on population targets and growth? If not why not? Its the single biggest parameter in almost all environmental problems.
Many older (50+ to 90+) individuals (male and female) have undertaken programs to change their lifestyle and their level of health (including incredible changes in physique) without the use of drugs – simply through proper eating and exercise habits. While it's clear that certain types of drug treatments can accelerate the changes (look at professional bodybuilders today, for example), not everyone desires to have physiques that in some cases look freakish. The good doctor in this story changed his lifestyle and he obviously looks and feels much better today then he did 15-20 years ago. However, drugs are not for everyone. There are side-effects and they can be dangerous for some people. Everyone needs to use what is appropriate and safe for their individual needs.
I am also 74 years old, do not take meds, and feel I am in better condition & health than the man in the story. My weelky routine includes Yoga and Pilates, each 2 -3 classes per week, plus weights and cardio. Stretching and balance are as important as bulging muscles and popping veins in a senior. I also compete in Masters Track & Field in sprints and five different throws. No special stuff, just hard work and good diet.
Doesn't look a bit over 30.
I am a 58 year old female and I am on the same regimen, except for the human growth hormone, as that alone adds $1,000.00 to the cost per month. Please have an expert on the show, somone like Susanne Somers and a prominent Doctor that really knows all about the subject. I was really suprised when over and over the lack of FDA approval was mentioned. The FDA does not want any Bioidentical Hormones, BHRT, available at all because they cannot patent them. People like me who feel fantastic on them, now for 8 years, also believe the hormones and supplements are greatly beneficial to our overall health. Anderson Cooper 360 is THE BEST!!!
The report lumped so many things together as to confuse the audience. The report talked about HGH being used in children, the abuse in sports, and very little about old age. I thought the report was about the babyboomer generation? (That was the headline!) Now consider that this 74 year old is a Medical Doctor who has been on this therapy for a decade and offers a treatment program for older people. As I understand it, he isn't on high doses of HGH or testosterone. He just brings the levels back up some. I believe us baby boomers are past the age of majority, and we can decide how we want to address old age. Baby Boomers who partiicipate are under the care of a Medical Doctor. We aren't competing in professional sports, we aren't children and most of the people sneering at this Doctor have never experienced old age. We don't have a lot of years left. If we choose to fight old age, it is after all our fight!
Articles like this really open up a can of worms. It seems the FDA and government have been trying to suppress benefits of certain drugs. If we live too long we will break the bank of Soc security and potentially recieve the benefit from paying into it for 50 yrs. The other downside is we wont need the use of other drugs from drug makers and that could cost them billions.
HGH is called a drug but the body makes it. There are many compounds that the body makes naturally. Calling them drugs makes it sound like the body is doing illicit things. It isn't . WRT living longer in the USA, that is becoming difficult to do as everything seems to be polluted. Now we have fracking and injection wells. Living to a ripe old age will be like running the gauntlet as all the pesticides, GM food, aspartame, vaccines, etc., reach out and try to waylay you.
