Vote for the story that defined 2012
The past year brought historic changes, democratic milestones, devastating tragedies, and acts of heroism that will never be forgotten.
In 2012 Anderson traveled across the country and around the world seeking the truth. He met people who were struggling against seemingly insurmountable odds: Syrian refugees, gunshot victims in Colorado, New Yorkers who lost everything they had, widows facing a harsh new reality.
There were crimes that divided communities and launched important conversations about discrimination and ethics. In some cases, justice was served. Convicted of child sex abuse, Jerry Sandusky will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Lives ended too soon. Among them, four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, died in an attack on U.S. buildings in Benghazi, Libya on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The country mourned victims of violence at home and abroad.
After months of aggressive campaigning, contentious debates and a very tight race, voters elected a president for the next four years.
In the Middle East, hope for peaceful negotiations was again shattered by deadly attacks between Hamas-controlled Gaza and Israel. Egypt took a major step in electing a president, but protesters are still occupying the streets of Cairo to demand the kind of society they fought for during the Arab Spring.

DROUGHT !!!!!! I can't believe it wasn't an option. We ware continuing this drought into 2013. It will be affecting our food supply and policy. Remember the riots in Greece and Egypt ? Just wait.
The election further defined our nation at a most critical time. The people clearly supported a more balanced and fair approach to lifting us out of the Bush era economic catastrophe, created by the greed of the moneyed elite, who had been steadily buying more influence in Supreme Court decisions and Congressional obstructionism. In other words, had been on the march against our democracy for their own selfish ends. It also sent a message to one of the two major political parties, the GOP, that falling under the intimidation of the far right Tea Party extremists and a would-be dictator in Grover NERD-QUEST, was another catastrophe for America. Because of the looming doom of the GOP I think the election was definitely the story of the year.
Egypt 2012 – we are witnessing the start of a new era that will bring about changes in international relations, politics and world economics. Cultural change made possible by globalized communications, new technologies and social media. Also, Egypt poses the question of wheather the international community really believes in democratic elections and is willing to support the costs of transition

very many stories like death of travon martin, coup in mali....., one cant define 2012 for me. nice question as t made me recall many news headlines since January
To me Syria was the biggest story because politics happen every day but so many innocent people killed without any help from the International community. I will never understand how we can ignore the distress of so many if it's not in our best interest to help. Just like Rwanda it is inconceivable that a country based on personal freedom can care so little about mass murder in other countries.
