In my opinion, It should not be a public offering of any kind, but the President should have been advised immediately since Petraeus was part of his administration. To not inform the President skirts very close to a Treasonous act by the FBI. This is how Coups begin, keeping secrets from the head of Government. It is inexcusable, despite what they at the FBI may cite as their "policy."
We've been here before, and for anyone under 50 you may not remember but have no excuse not to read up on the terror and intrigue this nation went through with Senator McCarthy witchhunts in the 50's and Hoover's iron clad hold on domestic intelligence in the 60's 70's and 80's. Hoover has been marginalized as a cross dresser, I feel to hide the evil he perpetrated on anyone in office with his "secret police." Robert S. Mueller should be fired as FBI Director, along with the informant who told the Republican about Petraeus in the summer, and anyone else who knew about it and didn't tell the President.
