Letters to the President #1385: 'So you want to share the wealth?'

Reporter's Note: President Obama receives a letter from me every day. He probably wishes that were not the case.

Dear Mr. President,

$93 million dollars in nine days. That is what I am told that you, Governor Romney, and your supporters are spending in the home stretch of this campaign. Wow.

That’s a lot of money. A lot of lottery winners don’t score that kind of cash.

I want to return, on this final Sunday of the election season, to a theme I raised earlier in this race. Did you ever pause to think during this whole long year about all the other things that could have been done with that much money? As I understand it, you and Governor Romney have each raised somewhere around one billion dollars for this race.

Months ago I proposed a simple plan: Each of you should agree to spend half of your campaign money on something that might help someone other than yourselves. I’m not saying that either of you had to be completely altruistic. You could have, for example, set up job fairs with that money and put big campaign signs near the event so everyone would know who was paying for it. Heck, you could have created temporary work that might have helped some folks pay the rent. You could have doled out “Business Startup” grants in your own name. You could have offered the money as special “Campaign Scholarships” for kids trying to go to college. You’re for that, right?

But did either you or Romney take me up on that? Nope. Instead, we’ve been treated to an exhaustingly long campaign that cost more money than any presidential race we’ve ever seen before…and now the money is pretty much gone. All for two men to fight over one job.

I realize that each of you think you’re election will be the best possible thing that could happen to America, but I’m also sure you both could have run highly professional, successful campaigns with…oh say…a half billion dollars. No?

Anyway, there is still a little time. At the rate you guys are spending even a day’s worth is a small fortune that I’ll bet some other American needs a lot more than either one of you.

Just think about it.
