Tonight on AC360: Jimmy Carter's grandson explains how he helped leak Romney video

The grandson of former President Jimmy Carter says he helped leak the controversial footage of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a private fund-raiser last May.

James Carter IV isn't saying who shot the video with a hidden camera but he says he persuaded that person to give the video to Mother Jones magazine, which released the video on Monday.

Carter tells us he tracked down the source via Twitter after seeing a short clip posted by the person of Romney talking about a factory he visited in China.

Once the source was connected with Mother Jones' reporter David Corn Carter says he stepped out of the process.

On the video, Romney talks about that Chinese factory his former firm Bain Capital purchased and made a joke about wishing he was Latino. He also argues nearly half of American voters will vote for President Obama because they get government support.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent of people who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, you-name-it," Romney says on the tape.

In a news conference Monday night, Romney said he could have spoken "more clearly" at the fund-raiser at the home of Sun Capital co-founder Marc Leder in Boca Raton, Florida. However, he made no apologies and insisted he was trying to point out the different approaches by his campaign and the president's.

Anderson Cooper just spoke with Carter about the video. Watch the preview clip to see how he replied when asked if the motivation for getting the video was personal over how the Romney camp has characterized his grandfather as president.

And don’t miss more of the interview on AC360 at 8 and 10 p.m. ET to hear what Jimmy Carter had to say to his grandson about the video.

Romney's comments towards the 47% of the U.S people made him lose a lot, and it questions his values.

Romney speaks the truth that 47% of Americans are on the public dole and people are offended? Americans deserve what they get in the next 4 years. At least President Obama will be able to control and direct his constituents as they will all be beholden to him for their largess. America as it was founded and for the first 228 offered opportunity. Now it will be in a perpetual decline as critical mass will take over and more will be taking than giving. How long do you think that's going to last?

I can't vote for this clown even as a republican. Not a fan of Obama much either. Yay two party system! Every election I get to choose the lesser of two evils. Going to need a political revolution soon America.

No surprise here regardless of the truth of which Romney spoke. It's highly unlikely that the 46 million recipients of food stamps; the million or more of illegal aliens granted asylum via the "Dream Act" directed Executive fiat; or sundry others receiving some form of government handout will vote for Romney and cut off what they likely ought not be receiving. Obama is a "Dealer of Government Handouts" and like a drug dealer, once his customers are hooked, they won't turn their back on him.

But the motive of Jimmy Carter;s grandson is obvious: Help reelect our present Marxist in Chief in order to move his grandfather from 1st place to 2nd place as being the worst president in the history of the United States. Way to go sonny!

The handouts that Obama was forced into spending to save the world from market failure and depression, went to big industry and failing banks, not the 47% of poor Americans.
The reason the markets became corrupted was due to laxed regulations both in finance and in business. They both sucked the working stiff and government coffers dry until their bogus schemes devoured themselves and threatened a collapse of the world economy.
Obama has tightened up the regulations to prevent profiteering in the markets. Romney wants to return to less government control and more tax cuts for the wealthy. I think we all know where Mitt's head is and we all feel its time he pulled it out of there and saw the universe as we in the real world view it.

Can we get the entire show (9/18/2012) released as a web video? Awesome stuff, and I'd love to share the discussion with McKinnon/Begala.

    Mitt Romney,

I want to let you know that you have my total support BUT need to make a suggestion if you plan to be President. You are not connecting with the people / voters. So far you are stating what you can do as President, but you need to tell the voters what, when and how you will back up what you are saying. People are all saying "TALK IS CHEAP". The NOW President Obama has nothing to stand on but his record, which is worse than Charters. So the voters in Florida (May-be the USA) want to hear from your mouth just how you plan to do what you say you will do. You have OBAMA's very poor record in front of you such as unemployment really at 18% plus. National debt at 15 T or worse. Military in a mess. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

So if you want to win this Presidential election, you need to take the kid gloves off and open your eyes and listen to your heart and start talking to the citizens and voters of the U.S.A. and do as our fore fathers did. I agree with President Truman "If you can not stand the heat, get out of the kitchen"

No one needs a criminal who steals from your hard earned wages to support billionaires, now matter how honest he is about his theft. If he's telling the truth about him being a greedy thief, it would be the first truth he's ever told in his "Mr. Burns" like existence.

I thought that we was already taught that taping people without there knowledge was illegal, didnt you all learn anything out of the ACORN fiasco. Never proved that they actually faked social forms for people to get boverment money, or voter fraud, which was both dropped when they went defuct, but we did learn that it was illegal to tape them without there knowledge... So is this tape illegal and the person who shot it and anyone involved with it commiting a crime? Or does it work different if your on different sides and then which side? The side in the white house is right at that time? Maybe?

It is a disgrace that jimmy Carter's grandson needs to feel important by sneaking a video , what a man. A really person wouldn't sneak but then again he is following his grandfather's footsteps. But the true disgrace is for the lives lost in war and our embassies but more hours are wasted on trivia news than factual news. Aren't the lives of our US citizens more important than a few days of news ? Anderson Cooper I thought you were better than that. Not. That you care, but You lost a family of viewers for your station after this report

Romneys comment pertained to who would or would not likely be voting for him, period. Don't add more to it than what it was. Anderson? How about keeping President Obama honest as well? I never see you do it by mentioning his name. When you do keep him honest, you simply refer to it as this administration. How about keeping Mr. Obama honest on what he is promising the college students saying he wants to cut tuition in half. We know that is not something he can do. We are broke!,,,,,,,,,,

As a registered Independent Voter, I am dismayed at the large amount of time you are spending on the comments made on the tape by Romney versus the small amount of time you spent on the comments made by the President on the Loyola tape or reviewing the comments he made in 2008 about Conservatives clinging to their religion and their guns. Clearly a double standard exists on your show. This is why so many independent thinking Americans believe that there is a liberal bias in the mainstream media and on your cable news show. The fact that you continue to allow a financial PAC supporter of the President, Paul Begala, on your show spewing out his biased rhetoric further demonstrates the liberal bias in your so-called news show. If you want independent Americans to continue to watch your show then, I strongly suggest that you make a concerted effort to spend an equal amount of time on both candidate and all issues. Furthermore, I believe that you should allow an equal amount of pun-dents from both sides to argue on behalf of the candidate/issue followed up by neutral independent analysts (i.e., David Gergen, etc.) to weigh in on both sides explaining the pros/cons of the candidates/issues. I can guarantee you that the first show that works to create this type of unbiased and neutral format will be the most watched news show in America. Until that point in time, I guess your show will continue to come in second or third place behind the conservative Fox news and the liberal MSNBC.

Presently it seems that Romney’s character is omnipresent or pervasively revealing. Amoral character not only in business but even running for president, he delivers his true colors. One does not have to be blindsided by his casual donor dinner comments to see the real persona; truly being an ugly American. I am ashamed for him, if he can’t be ashamed for himself.

This video really made me think about what is at stake here. Romney told it like it is, and it was refreshihng for a politician to speak his mind, to speak the truth. I don't hear that from Obama speeches. All I hear from him is class warfare, envy, and jealousy. Romney has my vote.

Well, if your 72, still working and afraid to quit, you should vote for Obama who has promised to protect your investments from manipulation by industries like Bain and greedy idiots like Romney who's economic policies caused the downturn to begin with.

i keep reading about the video being leaked. i don't get it because in every apsect of life from ordering food at mcdonalds, parking at the mall garage, driving into dc, etc. i am on numerous cameras some that have video capabilities. how does one have to leak a video of a speech that is several months old about the presidential nominee being frank about his perspective on getting votes, not caring about people. i don't suspect that obama personally cares, and in our time of need, would certainly disappear with other elitist into their underground bunker in order to survive, this is applicable to most presidents because they are so distant and hangout with their elitist circle friends. they use the media to exploit situations and see everyone as sheep. tom – i don't believe for one minute that you are republican because after 4 years of unfullfilled promises, relationships that have disolved throughout the world, a cabinet that makes bushs' look like angels, a doj that makes the mafia look like regular boys hanging at the vfw, lie after lie (the obama stutter), etc. one item wouldn't change your perspective of his failures.

Why dont we just change the laws, so that only people that pay income tax can vote. The people that pay the taxes are after all the ones who support the country. If you cant support the country you shouldnt have a voice in its decisions.

The mud slinging from both sides have made me indifferent so far in the race but after seeing, watching and hearing about this from Romney discourages me greatly. First and foremost in my opinion, the President's job should be making the nation and ALL of it's citizens have a better life. If you shun some and praise others, you're already doing a poor job.

I am not surprised that Jimmy Carter's name Is Involved. He is the one President that is ostracized by even Clinton.
While Romney's deliveyr is to some, disturbing I find it interesting that we focus on that, as opposed to the issue. So now you should only have 1 issue. Who do you like vs who actually at least addresses the issues.

How can anyone think about voting for this man? Just think what he will do if he ever becomes president, 47% of the people in this country will be cut off from any help and services they need to survive. Romney said that these people think of themselves as victims and think that they at entitled to food. Is he crazy! How about what he said about the Hispanics. That if they become a voting block like the Blacks there will be a problem for the campaign and for the nation. If I were Hispanic I would be screaming my head off, as it is I am outraged!! Get real Romney, not everyone was born with a huge silver spoon in their mouths like you were. Meet some of these people and see what wonderful and hard workers they really are. But then again I don't think you would ever want to do what you would consider slumming. I sure you have never ever met or spoken to anyone not in your upper class life.

What a bunch of baloney. Jimmy Carter's ( I am still sorry I voted for Carter) Grandson sneaks into a Romney fundraiser, gets a video, releases it and there is a hell of a big uproar! I wonder why someone didn't sneak into the George Clooney/Obama fundraiser and release a counter Obama comment ....... because Independents are not sneaky! Anderson can't possibly say anything good about Romney ..... Romney does not really support the lifestyle that Anderson has chosen! And please don't give me that crap that Anderson Cooper cannot help the fact that he is gay. I have been waiting 35 years for science to show me that the "gay" gene has been found.

Obama (another mistake ..... I voted for him) told Matt on NBC news, I think, that if he did not do such and such then he, Obama, should only be a 1 term presidnet. Why doesn't Anderson or whats her name ....Erin something .... have the guts to talk about that!!!!! Please tell me.

I am curious that in light of the Romney tape, no one is bringing up the interview with his mother where she discussed the fact that his own father received food stamps. Seems to add some hypocrisy to the whole thing...

Tom, I don't think you fooled anyone. Go back to your Obama shrine. Whatever you do, don't read his book "Dreams from my father." Don't think about what he means when he says "Fundamentally change America". If you do, you can't vote for him unless you really don't care about the future. I.e. YOUR future. Go ahead, read Obama's book, see what he says about his grandfather. I dare you.

He doesn't say "I don't care"; he refers to not worrying over getting their vote because he doesn't see many who are from a certain mind set about welfare voting for him. If this poorly stated comment can cause you to change your vote, then you have not paid attention to the man's life of service and generosity.

You seem to embarrass too easily to be a Republican. You are either a RINO or a liberal.

But are you more embarrassed that the Middle East is blowing up because of Obama's policy of appeasement toward the Middle East and our perceived military weakness has given hope to the crazies living there?

Are you more embarrassed that this country has 23 Million fellow Americans unemployed or underemployed because of the failed policies of Obama that has his ideologies trumping sound job growth actions, like allowing the Keystone Pipeline to be built and that has Unions losing out on prospects to earn a living?

Are you more embarrassed that Obama has managed to maintain an 8% unemployment rate for over 43 months and that his Department of Justice has been caught red handed in scandal after scandal but does nothing to jettison the Attorney General who is obviously involved in each and that the Fast and Furious scandal has cost the life of one of our Border Patrol Agents and hundreds of citizens of Mexico?

Put me down as being more embarrassed for anyone who had the mistaken belief in this Hope and Change President given his credential to be the leader of our Country and any inclination whatsoever to put him back into office for another four years knowing that his true self will be revealed because he will have no political consequences to restrain him.

      September 19, 2012 at 10:06 am |

Oh please! You are not a Republican. You and the rest of the liberals are deliberately twisting what Romney said. He did not say he didn't care about those people . He said they will not change their vote, so he is going after the votes of those who are undecided.
