Letters to the President #1329: 'Hut one, hut two! Oh wait...'

Reporter's Note: The president receives a letter from me each day.  At least I write one that often…I suppose I can’t say whether he receives it or not.

Dear Mr. President,

Well, football season is solidly underway again, and I can’t say that I’m happy about it.  I wish I were, but I just don’t feel entirely ready for it.  Not in a training sense, because I’ve pretty much abandoned my hopes of being called up by the Saints anyway, but rather in a spirited, let’s go get ‘em, bring on the league way.

I imagine my lack of interest is the result of several things:

1)      This is an Olympics year, and after watching so much sport over the summer, I’m a little sported out.  Despite the rare pleasures of competitive rowing, rhythmic gymnastics, and of course women’s beach volleyball, there comes a time when I just want to see something without a scoreboard…which leads me to my second point…

2)      This is an election year.  Covering a presidential race is a lot like covering sports, only without all the fun.  So that too makes me feel somewhat less than enthusiastic about watching more head butting during my weekends.

3)      It’s just too hot.  By the time you read this, I will have completed my latest half marathon, a nice little race I run every September.  Normally it is much cooler.  It feels like autumn.  Maybe it’s global warming.  Maybe it’s just a weather pattern.  It doesn’t feel like football time, in any event.

So while I will check out the Saints scores as always, I regret to say you’d better not count on me in the immediate future if you’re getting up a gang of guys to go down to the sports bar for Monday Night Football.

Maybe by October, but then I suppose you’ll be somewhat distracted yourself.

Regards,
Tom
