Kellyanne Conway's sex-selective abortion statements on AC360

Tonight on AC360° guest Kellyanne Conway stated, "You've got all these little baby girls being killed just because they're girls in this country.” Conway added, "We should look at the Guttmacher Institute statistics to really illuminate us on that. But it does, it does occur because there's so much science now, people can, they can know the gender of their baby and they make their choices accordingly."

AC360 checked into the Guttmacher Institute information about sex-selective abortion. This is the information on their website:

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/gpr/15/2/gpr150218.html

“…What is conclusively known is that the U.S. sex ratio at birth in 2005 stood at 105 boys to 100 girls, squarely within biologically normal parameters. Beyond that salient fact, two studies using 2000 U.S. census data to examine sex ratios among Chinese-, Indian- and Korean-American families found that although the ratio for first-born children in such families was normal, there was evidence of son preference in second- and third-order births, if the older children were daughters. Notably, the authors do not pinpoint the cause of the disparate ratios—whether prepregnancy techniques involving fertility treatments or sex-selective abortions. In addition, they comment that these three ethnic communities constitute a very small proportion—less than 2%—of the U.S. population. A third analysis that supporters of PRENDA rely on is a small-scale qualitative study involving interviews with 65 immigrant Indian women who practiced sex selection, either before pregnancy or during pregnancy through an abortion. Many of these women spoke of the social and cultural basis for son preference and the intense pressure faced by women in their communities to produce sons…"

Kelly Ann Conway had a very good point. Even if the % of sex selection abortions in the U.S. is very low, it is still likely in the thousands due to the large population in this country. Even if it were only in the hundreds, does that make it acceptable?? Congress was right for trying to do something about this. They see what is happening in China and India and are trying to stave off a bigger problem here. And with increasing immigration from that part of the world to the U.S., it was reasonable and laudable for them to do so. We need to send a message to those who come here and would consider aborting their female child simply because she is a girl, that it is simply not acceptable in this country. Unfortunately the rabidly pro-abortion Democrats would not support this legislation. We need to ask ourselves who are the real extremists in the abortion debates. The media always focus just on one side – the pro-life side and hardly ever focus on the ones that want to allow very late-term abortions, tax-payer funded abortion, no parental consent or notification, and even free access to sex selection abortions. Anderson: you're usually fair and objective, but not last night.

Anderson, thanks for confronting this false statement. I think these political discussions need a new format, which gives the host more time to fact check what is being said. Please keep up with this format, and not just the "he said, she said" circus that is so prevalent in news shows today...

Thank-you for standing up and challanging this women's preported facts about sex selective abortions. I realize there is rethoric on both the right and the left, but it is good to know that there is a journalist/reporter not afraid to stop an interviewee when they are lying. I"m sure there will be a post on some r/w blog today abot the liberal media "trashing" one of thier mouth pieces, but I thought you handled the debunking in a classy professional way.

Thank you for rapidly clarifying – both on air and on line – the Guttmacher Institute report on sex-selective abortion. Conway's blatant disregard for the facts is galling enough, but for her to reference Guttmacher to support her views is truly beyond comprehension.

So are they saying, that if a little girl got
rape and got pregnant that she would have to keep it, also let just say that she was 10 yrs old and her parents are politician, what would they say then?
Now I think goverment should support abortion, because most these guys are convicts anyway, and who let convicts out.
    Goverment does. Aloha.

I was just watching the segment where sex selective abortion was discussed. Just thought you would like to know that I am an American living in Vancouver, Canada and we have had several newspaper articles in the past few months concerning this. In Canada, clinics usually have a policy that they are not allowed to tell people the gender of their baby because they found people were having abortions because of the sex of the child. Well the newspaper article discussed how groups of people now are going to Washington state to have ultrasounds and then coming back to Canada to have an abortion. Washington clinics are even actively advertising in Vancouver to promote this.
    Though this was worth sharing.

I was so impressed to see that Anderson called Kellyanne on her bogus statement as soon as she said it. And kudos to your producing staff for lulling the real facts during the break! This kind of effort is why I love your show!
