Police say handcuffed man shot himself

CNN's Randi Kaye reports on the controversy surrounding Chavis Carter, a man police say shot himself in the head while handcuffed behind his back in a squad car.

    So he commits suicide for having ten dollars of weed and skipping a drug class... give me a break. This was cold blooded homicide.

    U know what's sad?? That there r ppl out here who believe this story.. this story doesn't make any sense @ all.. Okay, granted I have never been in hadcuffs in my life and I do not wish to experience that.. but what the hell would be the purpose of handcuffs if they were so "easy to get out of." He stated that with so much confidence and arrogance it sickens me.. This only proves that humanity has no hope left.. smh really sad that a mother has to lose her son this way!!!

    The only explanation I could think of is the officers missed the gun hidden in his back waistband the first time he was placed uncuffed in the back of the squad car. It's possble Carter hid the gun in between the back seat then tried to get at it the second time he was placed in the squad car with handcuffs. As he was pulling the gun out from between the seats, it went off, probably by accident, not intentionally to kill himself. The angle of the entry wound and gun shot residue on his hands, would help determine if it could have been self inflicted.

    I have been hand cuffed several times and it is impossible to have a gun if they searched him and the handcuffs are to tight to be able to shoot anything. The chief of police knows it is impossible and he is wrong for protecting him.

      The scenario does sound rather bizarre, but if the cops really did shoot him themselves then why not take off the handcuffs after the fact and just say he wasn't cuffed at all.... Seems like it would have been a much easier sell for the cops involved.

    this explanation is implausible to the point of arrogance. I am more afraid of the arrogance than any thing else. That authorities would even make such a claim makes me fear that they are far too comfortable operating outside of the law.

      I agree with your comment and totally disagree with the Chief of polices` explanation. I hope in the near future, police departments across the country can successfully get rid of bad cops, but after this story, I`m doubtful.
