Sen. John McCain says Sen. Harry Reid might have gone "over the line" by alleging Mitt Romney didn't pay taxes for 10 years. McCain also discusses Kofi Annan’s resignation as the special envoy to Syria and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country. Watch a preview of Anderson Cooper’s interview with the Senator and see the rest of their conversation tonight at 8 and 10 p.m. ET.

McCain's temper is always a good political barometer. His dislike of Romney is well documented, and of course he has no problem with Reid, a crusty scrapper just like himself. So why is he mad? Because Romney's chances are dwindling, and so are his own chances of reaping the satisfaction of seeing Obama defeated.
Perhaps Romney should tell Obama to "put up your college transcripts, credit card info, passport, medical records, etc., or tell Harry to SHUT UP"
That's what the entire Campaign by the Republican Tea Party, has been all about. One ridiculous accusation after another. How dare they accuse Reid ( a more honorable man than they will ever be), once again, for doing something they are doing every single day. This is a battle on both sides. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks. Sheldon Adelson is trying to buy this election. Sleazy.
The Tea Party Republicans are pushing America towards a " One Party Rule " Theres so much hatered , lies and distrust amoung the two major parties they cant operate our Govt. Nothing can move forward unless we have a Democrat President , Democrat House and Democrat Senate .
If I have to pay 25% in taxes, why do you deserve to pay 14%? Being bilingual English Spanish republicans terrify me beyond belief. Why is English superior to Spanish given both are Western European languages with strong roots in our country?
Good for Sen. Reid! It's about time that Romney gets called on the carpet for his arrogant refusal to submit his tax returns. He hasn't even submitted 2011 taxes. I don't get to submit my taxes "when they're done..." It's just another example of Romney's wealth getting him special favors. He's hiding something and I'm betting it's either not legal or it's such a low rate of taxes that he doesn't want the tax payers to know how little he and his rich friends have to pay through our present tax codes.
What is Romney getting so angry about. Voters have legitimate concerns: off shore accounts, tax returns, and the names of campaign contributors. This is standard stuff. No one is picking on Mitt Romney.
Knowone needs to know just as know one needs to Know why the repubs said they would not work with this president thye day he was elected. they are distroying this country to prove a point.
Romney legally paid 13.9% taxes in the year he released. His platform is to lower tax rates on his fellow millionaires to say-–10%. The next Romney clone in 2020 can then argue that he legally paid only 10% taxes AND that anyone that rich who paid a penny more would be disqualified to be president. This is the heart of the Republican platform and trickle down economics; he and they sincerely believe this–I guess. If they can convince an electoral majority, we'll have the best government money can buy.
Why not just release his taxes. He rises all kinds of doubt by refusing to release his taxes. Everyone knows he is wealthy, so you have to assume henisnhiding some tax shelters, or paying out zillions to the Mormon church
Harry Reid withheld his sources because he was protecting them like journalists–like Cooper–protect their sources. Why do journalists protect their sources? Because of retribution! What kind of retribution might a $250,000,000 guy like Romney take on a whistle-blower? Pretty obvious in the financial universe. Reid can never prove or disprove whether Romney paid taxes. Only Romney can and he refuses. Romney also has a history of making false statements knowingly about his taxes when running for governor of Massachusetts. He refused to release his tax documents then but when forced to, documents proved he retroactively changed his residence from Utah to Massachusetts to avoid taxes and to be able to run in MS. Why believe Romney now when he could easily provide evidence. He's the only one who can release his taxes. WHAT IS HE HIDING?
He is not hiding anything, unlike tax cheat Tim Geitner. This is just a smoke screen thrown out there to divert President Obama's lousy record on the economy. Mr. Romney showed John McCain 20 years of tax returns when Romney was vetted for McCain's VP. This proves he has them. It is no ones business how much Mr. Romney made on his past income. He has shown what is required. OK, Mr. President, it is time you showed us your college transcript and release your last 20 years of income . Wonder how you went from making nothing to getting rich at the taxpayers expense!!!
Anderson, great point on speakers on both sides of the aisle making statements that are not backed up by any factual evedence. Stay objective on reporting the news and hold the offenders feet to the fire.
Anderson, I am not surprise you are supporting Romney's tax record allegations. You should ask Romney to show his tax return and all these allegations would be solve.
I'm so surprised that everyone has forgotten the issue regarding President Obama's native status. He was challenged to show his birth certificate to prove that he was an American citizen. Ted Turner along with other government officials would not let it go until proven otherwise. So the burden of proof was on the accused, and not the perpertrator.
Mitt Romney is in the same situation of producing the proof that he has paid his taxes, just like every american citizen!
Unfortunately, for him people want to know the truth! The burden of proof is on him. Sorry Mick, produce the proof!
That was my first thought also. It's kind of pityfull that the political atmosphere is such – But Obama's birth certificate was made into such an issue that now Mitt needs to pull up his big boy pants up, bite the bullet and yes, release his tax info! I am very interested.
thank you my friend thank you
Gees, this is straight out of a freshman congressman's playbook. To think that the leader of US Senate can make unsubstantiated allegations without fear of repercussions is sad. We know Romney is rich, and we know intuitively, as Paul Begala suggested, that he's practiced tax avoidance for years. Not fraud, but avoidance carefully crafted by the best of the best lawyers and accountants using the laws passed or upheld by Harry Reid's Senate. I'm certain he's compliant (but it sure makes a good punch line). We don't often talk about how rich the Obama's are getting in the White House. How did that happen? Wouldn't an interesting study be to compare 10 years of tax returns between the Obama's and the Romneys?
Impossible to make that comparison. Romney won't show his tax returns - Obama did.
Obama's tax records are out there. Romney revealed a couple decades of tax records to McCain in 2008, hoping McCain would pick him for VP... instead McCain goes with a total unknown. McCain is being coy in this piece, because McCain knows exactly what Romney is hiding.
And...........what about those huge IRA's, that everyone else thinks are illegal or have never heard of before Mit's, Could there be other strange things in those tax returns that no one else has ever heard of. We need to know......just how far Mit will go if no one is looking. Gotta believe he'd also move his family to Mexico if it came to that , or opening his taxes.
Show me the taxes!! That is what this piece is telling us all.
Thanks for this AC.
Anderson, why are you talking about the "real" issue...Romney not revealing his tax returns?
The GOP made the same claims as to whether the President was born in the United States and he ended it with PROOF. Let The Gov. show his tax returns.
Anderon, the talk about Romney with not paying taxes.... Why doesn't Romney putt up with his taxes. Further, pls be far about all the nasty allegations against our President not being an American citizen.
Enjoy your show & like your ridiculist.
If Harry Reid knows this allegation to be true that Governor Romney has not paid taxes in 10 years than why are Reid and Democrats wanting to see Governor Romney's tax returns? And why doesn't Harry Reid bring it up to the IRS and file some kind of tax crime charges???? Because Harry Reid is just plain pulling everyone's leg, it's a Harry Reid gimmick in hopes Governor Romney will produce his tax returns. Good trick, trick or lie.
