As a registered nurse with over 40 years background in psychiatric illness and care needs, and as a family caregiver for years I would wish the option to exit this world when I am ready and not just when the medical community or even my loving family would say it is acceptable. Mental illness can be as painful as many cancers. Just as cancer is not always curable or even well treated, neither are some mental illnesses. Dialog needs to continue to explore final exit issues. I am now in my senior years and believe I have a right to make final exit. decisions for myself and the means to execute my decision should be available to me. Perhaps if the medical community had been prepared to deal w/this issue in an open manner, persons such as the woman in your Final Exit special report would not have needed to go to persons she did not know to be with her as she ended her life.
