I was shocked at this situation. It is rare that ICWA has to be used because adoption agencies are not covering there bases. This act is from the late 1970's, 1976, get with it. As your report was being shown, I tried hard to look pass the "racial issue" but it was hard not too. The adoptive parents emotional side was shown over and over, and the emphasis that they the "best" for this child was consistantly emphasized.
Nothing was mentioned of the background of the father or what kind of relationship he and the biological mother had. This was 100% one sided.
I also would like to thank CNN for justifying that American Indian families are not good for American Indian children. I was raised on the Navajo reservation most of my life, I consider myself highly educated and somewhat successful (whatever that is measured to). More important I grew up in a Native American household.
If you actually go back and look at the history of ICWA, you will find why the act was put in place. If I am correct there was a Adoption Act before ICWA but it was a shameful policy.
Cultural awareness and teachings are important, it is hard for someone to understand who is not from another culture. I see patients continuously who have psychological issues because they were adopted by caucasian families. It is hard to explain but it exists.
I think this woman needs to be educated and realize that not all Indian tribes live on Reservations and Cherokee Nation is one of them. And SC law keeps being brought up regarding stating the father provided no support for the mother during her pregnancy; the child was born in Oklahoma. SC law should not even be taken into effect. And she needs to do her research as well because the KS law she quoted is not goodlaw. Just saying research should be needed before someone on CNN is allowed to speak on the subject as an "expert" I saw nothing expert about this and it makes me concerned regarding the other stories that are on here and how true they might be.
