A timeline of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal

Editor's note: Don't miss a fascinating interview with the mother of a boy allegedly abused by Jerry Sandusky. Tune in tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

(CNN) - 1977 - Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky founds the Second Mile, a charity to help troubled youths.

1994-97 - According to the grand jury report, Sandusky allegedly engages in inappropriate conduct with three different boys he met separately through the Second Mile program. One boy was 7 or 8, another was 10, and the third was 12 or 13 at the time. According to the grand jury report, the now-adult men said Sandusky engaged in inappropriate conduct ranging from touching to outright sexual encounters, including several incidents during the nights before Penn State football home games, when the team, staff and boys Sandusky had allegedly invited were staying at a hotel.

1998 - Penn State police and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare investigate an incident in which the mother of an 11-year-old boy reported that Sandusky had showered with her son and may have had inappropriate conduct with him. In a June 1, 1998, interview with investigators from both agencies, Sandusky admits showering naked with the boy, admitting that it was wrong and promising not to do it again, according to the grand jury report. The district attorney advises investigators that no charges will be filed and the university police chief instructs that the case be closed, according to the testimony included in the grand jury report from the police detective who investigated the incident.

People::reporters must understand that this penn state issue goes deep mike,mr red head did not want to shake any feathers because he would not be in the position he is in today, and all of those men one time or another have been molesting children, that is why they can easily look the other way.

Anderson, maybe the school the victim went to didn't want to call the police when his mother screamed at them 3 times to do so was because they knew they had no right to let the boy leave the school with sandusky without the mothers permission. Wonder how many other boys they let leave with sandusky without the parents permission? She definetly can sue that school. Please tell her that! Plus they were obligated to call the police and did not do so. Thats a crime, isn't it?

why is no one talking to or about joe paterno? mike mcqueary could very well have talked to the police. did the police notify mr. paterno? could that be the reason why there is no record of mr. mcqueary's notifying the police? joe paterno ran penn state, not the president nor the board of trustees. the rape in the showers happened on friday night and mr. paterno did not notify his superiors, tim curley and gary schultz until sunday, there was an entire day for a police report to be destroyed. why is no one talking to or about joe paterno? he was a god at penn state. watergae was at first just a break in and the cover up went to the highest office in the land. the sexual crime occured an an athletic venue. why aren't your reporters questioning joe paterno?

I am not going to comment of the accused in this case as I think you are doing a great job but being a police officer with 23 yrs of violence against women and children, I am asking you to stop calling the victims "alleged victims". Being a victim is not dependent on the court status of an accused person. No matter what happens to Sandusky these boys are victims. thanks

My son went thur the same with sexual abuse and victim # 1 is acting just like my son . the police did not want to handle it I had to scream and yell for them to come to the house even after the report was made the man show up again @ his school and the police did nothing.... we need to proctect our children from men like Jerry Sandusky.... he said he helps other youngv children with no contact but he hurt and damage some young men for the rest of their life, all the help in the world will not fix the damage.....the non-trusting issue is life long..with their parents ,family etc.
