Reporter's Note: President Obama is, I think, celebrating a special day. I'm helping by, as always, sending my daily letter to the White House.
Dear Mr. President,
I don't know if it occured to you that precisely three years ago today you won the presidency of the United States. Not a small milestone to look back on, I'd say.
I wonder sometimes if you have always been thrilled at that result. Of course being beloved by millions and trusted with the fate of a nation is good fun, but now...well, while you may well win re-election you also face at least the real prospect of losing; of being told by even more millions that they don't trust your leadership anymore.
I don't envy any person, Democrat or Republican, such a blow. Sure, if it goes that way you can write books, get your library up and running, makes speeches, and go on talk shows whenever you wish. I assume a lot of restaurants will comp your meals, which would be cool. But yeah, I guess that's tiny spuds compared to eating at the big kids' table.
Still, as you head into the year of fighting to keep your job and hoping to recreate the magic of three years ago, I have some advice: Remember that you are not alone. A lot of us out here fear for our jobs in ways we didn't just a few years back. For an awful lot of Americans, every day they walk into the office is a re-election campaign; a quest to make sure they are asked back tomorrow and still trusted to do their work.
To be frank, the more you get that, the better your chances of keeping your job anyway.
Flying back from Canada now. Doing my job. Call if you can.
Regards,
Tom
