Child Porn or Free Speech?: Join the Live Chat

A publishing powerhouse has an online portfolio that includes a web site that allows users to post and comment on sexually suggestive pictures of teenagers. The web site is reddit.com and visitors to the open forum can create subcategories on topics of interest. One of which is Jailbait, an online community for people with a common interest in teen girls in suggestive poses. Is it child porn or free speech? We're Keeping Them Honest. Plus, day three in the Michael Jackson death trial. And, final arguments in the Amanda Knox trial in Italy.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

Its absolutely disgusting. 25 year-old men oogling 14 year-olds. The main moderator of that "subreddit" also has another one dedicated to photos leaked from a 14 year-old girl's cellphone. It is beyond disgusting & hopefully Conde Nast will actually pay attention this time and get rid of the offending subreddits.

I feel cheated as a viewer when you have a guest like Cornell who loses his cool to the point of sputtering, talk too fast for understanding and takes offense to the point of baiting other guests with incendiary statements. Mr Fleischer was right in avoiding direct confrontation. This is not debate, it is offensive to my need for decision making information. I appreciate heating both sides, but please use more rational sources. I like hearing from adults...not arrested opinions.

r/Jailbait is a total violation of the right of teenage girls to dress provocatively and take pictures of themselves in compromising positions without anyone ever seeing it. I'm sure that we can fix this somehow, perhaps requiring all females to wear opaque garments from head to toe with little slits to look out of and making them stay indoors at all times will do the trick.

Thank you, Cornell Belcher, for sticking to your guns in the "discussion" with Ari Fleischer rather than allowing him to get his smarmy last word in. One can only hope that Cain's words were just poorly chosen, but they absolutely were racist. Fleischer's slippery comments remind me of a public figure who "apologizes to anyone who may have been offended." He should have been stepping up to the fact that Cain was offensively generalizing on the basis of race.

I agree Paula. For a cardiac surgeon, he should have demonstrated much more knowledge re CPR, life saving equipment, etc.
Yet, i saw a segment withsome of his patients who swear by him. They stated he saved their lives and did not charge them if they did not have insurance.

Reddit is a generally good social media site for news and humor. I'm somewhat surprised you have never heard of it. Unfortunately, there's a lot of sophomoric submissions that get up-voted to the front page. That reflects how sophomoric the community is and I have debated whether I should just quit browsing Reddit everyday, because of the immature community.

    September 29, 2011 at 8:42 pm |
  12. Starr, formerly know as vincent

I have also heard it reported that the Dr. was doing CPR with ONE hand. I have never heard of that. One hand would not provide enough compression to re-start a heart.
Also, CPR is performed on a firm surface like the floor not a soft bed.
It defintely sounds like the doc was trying to get rid of evidence, Reasons either feelings of guilt, or trying to protect MJ's privacy. I think it was guilt.
The type of cathater used can dislodge easily with movement.

If a Jewish person makes comments about Jewish people that is not anymore racist than a Black person making comments about Black people. Cornell tried to compare two different groups talking about each other. In this case Kain is talking about his own group.

People get frustrated with me because i still write checks. I simply have rebelled against almost being forced into using my debit card when i don't want to. Still, check cost $19 a box. They get you coming and going.

Guess you can blame the Democrats for putting all those new regulations on the banking industry.
Because they forced these banks to take less money in merchant fees, the loss of that income is simply being made up another way. Democrats might want to think things through the unintended consequences before moving ahead in their zeal to punish banks.

What other voting block votes as monolithically as blacks?
Despite Democrats controlling most of our big cities, and despite the Democrat's Great Society and War on Poverty, blacks are still complaining about the same things they did 40 years ago.
Black poverty, black unemployment, drug abuse, lack of education, unwed teenagers, lack of father's in the home, etc. have all increased despite Democrats controlling those big cities where many blacks live and despite the Great Society of the 1960s. So if things have not improved for many blacks, why do they continue to vote so blindly for Democrats? Could it be the freebies that Democrats promise them to keep them under their thumbs and dependent on the government?

    September 29, 2011 at 8:29 pm |

    I agree with Cornell
One party brainwashing one group of people unbelievable statement

    September 29, 2011 at 8:29 pm |
    • Jane - WI

Maybe it's not brainwashing as much as it's vote buying by keeping many blacks dependent on the government.
After all, Democrats, despite controlling most of our big cities, have done nothing to improve the lives of black people. So why keep voting for them? Why keep voting for the party who makes promises, but doesn't deliver?

    September 29, 2011 at 8:28 pm |

  26. Melissa

Cornel (sp?) raised a very valid point. Had his comments been directed toward Jewish peoples (for example) the uproar would be unbelievable. Cain's comments suggested that Black Americans are incapable of making informed decisions when it comes to politics. That, is bigotry.

I am no longer a supporter of Cain. Where does he get off tell everybody I'm brain washed into voting Democrat like if I'm some kind of idiot. He's a moron in my book and he and the rest of Republican ideology is why I vote Democrats. And Ari is an even bigger moron for trying to play this down. The only reason why he is playing it down is because the person that said it is a Republican.

If one actually goes to the website they specifically state that the pictures must be of people who are 18 years or older. It looks the desire was to have pictures of maybe 18 year old and 19 year old and not of anything resembling kiddie porn.

It seems that many on this site are "racist" when it comes to black conservatives.

Hello, I am a Redditor, and have been for three years. Reddit has categories for everything, it is not promoting jailbait, any more than it promotes white rights, black rights, sexism, anti-sexism, atheist, Christianity, Islam, or anything else. That's the beauty of Reddit: So long as it's legal, you can find it there. But you don't have to, if the thought of 14-year-olds in skimpy clothing makes your stomach churn (as it does mine), don't go looking for /jailbait/, and don't subscribe to it. It's that easy. Kudos to Reddit admins for defending freedom of speech, and I hope sensationalist news reports don't change their minds. As Voltaire said, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

    September 29, 2011 at 8:19 pm |
    • Janis

Aiding and abetting the distribution of child pornography is freedom of speech? Give me a break.

      September 29, 2011 at 8:32 pm |
      • Alan

        A) It isn't child pornography. Yes it is incredibly creepy, but it isn't illegal. B) The only way Reddit "aids and abets" distribution of anything is by proving a means of communication. Would you be upset at the US Postal Service if a group of people had a mailing ring where they exchanged creepy but legal pictures of young women? My guess is no. And though it may be difficult to understand for those that don't use the website, that's really all Reddit itself amounts to.

        September 29, 2011 at 8:38 pm |
        • Janis

That's what Craiglist is too – a way to link to other web sites. The line will be crossed someday. People have to make a determination of what's OK in communication technology. Sex sells and Reddit needs to be accountable for what it's offering. Reddit could fall in the dot xxx instead of dot com category and lose a ton of business because of it. IP address suffixs will be changing soon. I wonder if they will have to accept xxx because of one small part of their site?

          September 29, 2011 at 8:52 pm |
      • Greg

The thing is Reddit is basically a site of links that goes to other websites and video/photo hosting sites. So if you go after Reddit because a link might take you to child pornography. You also have to go after Google, Bing, and Yahoo for the same thing.

        September 29, 2011 at 8:39 pm |
      • Ray Z.

It's clothed photos of teens. Unless we're going to make a law against child beauty pageants as well, it's creepy but legal.

I believe that Herman Cain's remark about black people being "brain washed" was at the very least ignorant!

I see Cornell's point – it could be considered racist – however Mr. Cain is black himself, so not sure racism applies.

Black people are not brain watch into thinking Democrat. People vote party according to their belief. Cain should just sit down somewhere because he makes no sense.

    September 29, 2011 at 8:17 pm |
    • Jane - WI

It is very odd and unusual for one group such as this to vote so monolithically.
If it's not brainwashing, what else is it?
Democrats certainly have done nothing to improve the lives of black people, so what is the explanation of this tunnel vision loyalty to that party? I know Democrats give them lots of freebies, so maybe it's just a matter of buying votes rather than brainwashing.
