Flooding Trouble After Irene: Join the Live Chat

The skies have cleared, but flooding is still a top concern after Hurricane Irene. Many rivers and creeks are expected to crest in New Jersey and bring new flooding. We'll also take you to Plattsville, New York, which was washed away by the storm. We'll talk to a reporter from YNN who is stuck in the Catskills town. Plus, polygamist leader Warren Jeffs is in a coma in a Texas hospital just weeks after he was convicted of sexually assaulting two girls he claimed were his "spiritual wives." And, we'll have the latest developments from Libya.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

The government was over reacting they were simply prepared. If we give out 5 warnings and only 1 of them turns out to be devastating at least we were prepared. Sure people are frustrated at the inconvenience but they are alive and that's worth all the criticism in the world.

It's good to see that Pres. Obama & other Government officials will be touring some of the areas greatly effected by Hurricane Irene. I can't believe that Piers Morgan is going to be talking about whether or not there was "media hype" on Irene.

This Aruba story is so mysterious. If they can't find her body and no witnesses, all they can hope for is an admission of guilt. I am so sorry for the family and friends of the missing woman. It must be agony for them.

    Good evening everyone,

My Brother and his Fiance left before the storm and I haven't heard how their house fared but they were safe.
I'm glad to see so many of you back today although it seems for most this storm this was not the deadliest.

Nic Roberson has been off the radar for a while.. I remember when he broke the story of Al Quaeda testing Bio weapons on dogs years ago on NewsNight /Aaron Brown(Where Anderson got his start with CNN anchoring). He is still a great reporter and CNN should keep his reports coming.

Is there anything Legal that can be done to the isolated Warren Jeffs communities? They continue to misinfform their congregation and abuse girls & women.
I'm not talking about free speech here, i'm asking about how to stop the sexual abuse & ignorance.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:45 pm |
    • Sharon Hastings

We would hope so but it doesn't sound like convicting Warren Jeffs is going to affect their beliefs that much. We'll see if they can survive without him.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:49 pm |

It's all about concrete evidence, I'm sure the justice department is looking though.

Yes, is he still leading his church? He could do it through his visitors as well as phone calls. They believe he is the prophet and will probably do what ever he says or writes to them.

In his booking photo, he looks like he'd not been eating very much. (his collar bones protruding)

I did read about Warren Jeffs. Fine with me if he doesn't eat or drink. He's wants to be perceived as a martyr by his people but he is just a weak, sick child molester.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:30 pm |
    • Emily

Is Warren Jeffs on some kind of hunger-strike or something, Sharon?

      August 29, 2011 at 8:34 pm |
      • Sharon Hastings

Yes, apparently he hasn't eaten or drank since he was convicted.

        August 29, 2011 at 8:38 pm |
        • Emily

He seems even more of a coward now.
Also, in that booking photo, he looks like the pedophile that he was convicted of being.

            Hi Emily.

              Hi Janis,
I just hope that everyone sees Jeffs as you said!
I wonder if many of his "followers" also feel that way yet are afraid to say so out loud?

              August 29, 2011 at 8:55 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

I agree with you Sharon. Except that if he martys (sp) himself, his "people" my raise himto "god" status and perpetuate his "type" of religious practice.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:38 pm |
      • Sharon Hastings

It seems like you could be right after seeing Gary's interview with the one man who would talk to him. He is still their prophet. All those people so duped. They're all searching for something and they think they have found it.

        August 29, 2011 at 8:46 pm |
  27. Gloria, Brooklyn, NY

That's horrible what happen to the those people in that regime!

      Agree with you, Starr!!!!!

      August 29, 2011 at 8:39 pm |
  30. Lauren from CT

While I think all of you at CNN have done a good job covering Irene, I was wondering about CT. We have 2 confirmed deaths, massive flooding, homes completely washed away and record power outages. Why not even a mention?

    August 29, 2011 at 8:22 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Hello Lauren from Ct. The only friend i have in CT is in Norwalk and all he reported was a long loss of power.

I have not heard reports from CT. Of course, my thoughts & prayers are with your state and people. Have you had a good Federal response?

      August 29, 2011 at 8:30 pm |
      • Lauren from CT

Thank you. The National Guard has been out and about, it's still early to really gauge how the response has been across the state. Locally in Naugatuck I saw them helping areas that were flooding from the Naugatuck river and surrounding creeks and streams. The in-land flooding is still an ongoing major concern since most rivers aren't expected to fully crest until mid-week. The last I looked we still had over 500,000 with no power.

        August 29, 2011 at 8:54 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

      Good point question..... Lauren......
They didn't know where hurricane path goes...... The reason that was not information enough as well..... They did not tell anyone about it.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:35 pm |
  31. Emily

This is so disgusting. To think that people are able to conceive of such brutality to another human - when I hear that it's a female treating another person like that, really makes my skin crawl even more.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:20 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

      Agree completely Emily.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:33 pm |

Yes, I agree with you, That is so digust to me!

      August 29, 2011 at 8:36 pm |
  32. Sharon Hastings

What to believe? Is Gadhafi's son really dead? Is the Lockerbee bomber really that sick or was that staged??

    August 29, 2011 at 8:20 pm |
    • Emily

This is a great report by Nic Robertson. I have a feeling that he really is that sick. Sounds like he doesn't have access to the medicines that he once did, before as the Rebels got to it. It's been some time, and what the bomber has, is only going to get worst.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:26 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Nic said that it was staged as well, I believe what Nic said that too...

      August 29, 2011 at 8:42 pm |
  33. Janis

OMG. If the Nanny is to be believed, the Gadhafi family are all sadistic monsters. Awful.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:18 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Very sadistic treatment to the nanny Janis. And, all because she would not hit their own child to stop him crying. I've never found that to work with a young one.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

      Janis,
Yes, It was so horrible for her, so sad...... I know how nanny felt this way...... I am so shocked that she was beaten or burn her over body..... 🙁

      August 29, 2011 at 8:27 pm |
    • Sharon Hastings

Yes Janis. Just horrible. I have heard that many have stepped forward to offer help to her, medically and otherwise.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:33 pm |
  34. Janis

I wasn't sure if I believed that the Pan-Am bomber was in his last days according to the reports. If Nic Robertson believes it, then I will. Too much past lying going on in loyalist Libya for any of them to be believeable.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:14 pm |
  35. Emily

It's great that there was so much coverage by the media.
Also, the different levels of Government seemed to really be on the ball for this.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:11 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

I thought the State gov's & Federal gov. performed very well.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:17 pm |
      • Emily

So do I, Starr. I think that they are also in no-win situation; there are going to be people that will complain that the Gov. was trying to scare people, are put way too much into this, however, I bet that they'd be the first ones to complain if the Hurricane was much worst or effected them. Even the different political parties can't predict "Mother Nature".

        August 29, 2011 at 8:24 pm |
        • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Really appreciated this post Emily. (smile)

          August 29, 2011 at 8:35 pm |
          • Emily

I wrote that post pro "Mother Nature", Starr. (Laughing)
I think it would have happened regardless of the Party in Power.

            August 29, 2011 at 8:54 pm |
      • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

        Starr,
Yes, they also warned all the state and local when hurricanes comes right away very serious important...... They couild have everything do help all people.

        August 29, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
  36. Janis

It's a shame that the high tourist season for Northen New England is coming soon. Comes at a hard economic time.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:11 pm |
  37. Emily

Wow, Hurricane Irene really did "wash" away Prattsville, didn't it?
I sure hope that the people are all safe.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:09 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Emily, i think i heard that all of the people of that town were safe and uninjured. Not so for their properties sadly.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:14 pm |
      • Emily

        Hi Starr,
I did end up hearing that too. That was the first time that I had seen that footage. It's sad to see that their homes (and community) were all washed away like that, however, at least they can re-build their lives.

        August 29, 2011 at 8:16 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Yes, It was... only one person swept the river, can't hang on, too late for him/her.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:19 pm |
  38. Janis

    Hello everyone.

The next few days are probably going to bring sad stories. Vermont is suffering as is it's sourthern neighbors. I'm hoping for a quick recovery for all the states inundated by Irene. Awful hurricanes.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:08 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Yes, Janis, You're right..... That was so terrible shock was your hometown!!!!!! Our thoughts and prayers with you as well.

"The 'I' was taking out of Irene when the hurricane came through New York!" That's a good thing. I wish good will for all the other states which were in her path!

Good evening Anderson, Isha, & Bloggers.
I hope that everyone escaped Hurricane Irene without much difficulty.

    August 29, 2011 at 8:06 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

      Emily,
Yes, they did but not have to leave when hurricane Irene...... Sad news there are 30 between 35 people killed during storm.

      August 29, 2011 at 8:11 pm |
      • Emily

That's very sad news indeed, Megan. I'd hate to hear just how high that would have been if the Government was not as pro-active as they were.

        August 29, 2011 at 8:14 pm |
        • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Yes, It was!!!! Very high flood right now between 8 or 10 feet I have heard.

          August 29, 2011 at 8:17 pm |
        • Cathy

And very sad to say, how much lower it may have been if absolutely everyone had taken the government's advice. One thing in the local and national governments' favor is that there were several days notice of this.

          August 29, 2011 at 8:19 pm |
          • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Good advice, Cathy, Good point there!

            August 29, 2011 at 8:22 pm |
          • Emily

That's true, Cathy. However, there are always going to be people that will not listen to the Government. It does sound like the majority did however, which is really great since it's not an area use to that sort of weather.

            August 29, 2011 at 8:29 pm |
            • Cathy

True and no doubt those who do not listen really dishearten the authorities. Sadly, for example, two young men decided to spring through Irene as it hit Maryland and were found dead later. Perhaps some just do not understand how serious these storms really are. It's such an unnecessary loss of life.

              August 29, 2011 at 8:36 pm |
              • Emily

That's such a sad loss of life...Perhaps there were a few that just didn't believe that it would be the sort of "Hurricane" which is seen in other areas. I think I saw there that it was the worst since the 1910s or 20s.

                August 29, 2011 at 8:47 pm |

Good evening everyone. So much flooding from the hurricane and alot of damage too. Very terrible that so many people lost their homes and are flooded out. NYC dodged a bullet but let's not sell this storm short. It has been very destructive.
