Irene Takes Aim at U.S., Manhunt for Gadhafi: Join the Live Chat

Hurricane warnings and watches are posted for parts of the east coast of the U.S. tonight as Hurricane Irene takes aim. We'll have the latest. Plus, opposition fighters in Libya searching for Moammar Gadhafi. They claimed they had him surrounded in Tripoli. We'll check in with our reporters in Libya.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

i'd like to see warren buffet donate a few billion to the World Food BANK – think that would make a bigger statement

    August 25, 2011 at 8:56 pm |
    • Cathy

Lisa, Warren Buffet has donated almost all of his billions to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His only request was that they use the money for the charities while Bill and Melinda were alive. That was quite a compliment to the Gates Foundation and certainly extremely humanitarian.

"Is there an Apple without Steve Jobs?" -Anderson...
I was talking with some friends today, and still remember when MAC kicked Jobs out of the company only go back begging him to return (13 yrs later) because they were nothing without him. I really have serious doubts that they can last long term with him, at least in the #1 spot. I wonder if Apple & Microsoft will reunite to stop GOOGLE from overtaking them both? Thoughts anyone?

    August 25, 2011 at 8:54 pm |
    • Cathy

I think Apple will do fine for several years. No company holds top spot forever, of course. They have a lot in the pipeline and he will be Chairman. I just wish he could beat his illness.

emily – i think apple and microsoft would exist in a world of "irreconcilable differences" 🙂

Terribly sad possibility for NY. I hope there is a change of direction–or minimal damage–from the hurricane.

    August 25, 2011 at 8:54 pm |
  8. Sharon Hastings

Yes, Anderson is right. Down here in Florida, residents know the drill and they follow it. I have been in 3 hurricanes since moving down here. One of them very severe–no power for a week, roofs taken off, thousands of trees completely denuded or uprooted, terrific storm surges. Everyone knows "run from the water, hide from the wind". We all have kits and stockpiles of needed supplies just in case. We know to fill up our bathtubs when it's close in case power is lost, you can use that water to flush toilets etc. I still keep certain food items stocked in the pantry just in case. But--if there is any danger of a surge of water or you are very near the water, you have to evacuate. I have stayed in my home with my storm shutters through a very bad category 3 and I'll never do it again.

        Hi Starr,
Yes, this is not the sort of weather news that the East Coast is use to.
Lets hope that much of it is precautionary.

She was able to find common feelings and connect with the guard. The journalists were very lucky to have her there. She speaks their language and she seems very cool and calm.

    Greetings everyone,

Hurricane is Irene creating quite a stir! Hoping for the best for the USA East Coast . Best advice is to follow all necessary precautions, with the preparedness lists of emergency supplies, the hurricane manuals and contingency plans and be as best prepared as possible to secure life & property.

    August 25, 2011 at 8:28 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

They have to find Gadhafi so the loyalists will quit fighting. It does look like chaos but what else can they do but go in spurts looking for him as they get information and tips.

If I was Ms. Rice, I'd be totally 'creeped out' by the scrapbook. She's a great lady.

      Hi Janis!
Gadhafi seems more and more out there, to me. (the more that I hear, today)
I can't begin to comprehend what's going on behind those eyes hidden by the dark creepy eye glasses.
I hope he's found soon, DOA!

      August 25, 2011 at 8:50 pm |
      • Janis

        I agree with you, Emily.

  25. Keith

I lived in Charleston when Hugo came through. We were told that there were hundreds of tornado s produced by the storm. I don't hear any talk about the possibility tornado s being produced by Irene. Is this a given or new findings that tornado s are not produced by hurricanes?

    August 25, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
    • Vince

      Keith,

Having experienced several hurricanes there are indeed small tornadoes sometimes in the midst of the hurricanes. You see the strangest things during the hurricanes – at times the sky turns into beautiful sunset during the passing of the hurricane eye which is the calm moment and then suddenly goes back to the dark night, once the eye has passed

Now they need Intelligence and Tips to capture Gadhafi

    August 25, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
  27. Saray

Gadhafi may be crazy but he is not stupid. He is not waiting in the hole like Saddam.

    August 25, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
  28. Starr, formerly know as vincent

Gadaffi has had a long time & a lot of money to build many hideaways.

Initially i thought he & his sons were below the Hotel that the jounalists were in.

    Condoleeza Rice photos?? Why?

    August 25, 2011 at 8:24 pm |
    • Cathy

As Grant said, stalker. He probably was attracted to her.

      August 25, 2011 at 8:27 pm |
      • Sharon Hastings

Yes I agree. Looks like he had a thing for her–why else keep an album with only her photos in it. Creepy!!

        August 25, 2011 at 8:29 pm |
        • Cathy

Ironic, really. Never would expect someone of his ilk to be attracted to a brilliant, accomplished, independent woman.

          August 25, 2011 at 8:31 pm |
          • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Thank you Cathy & Sharon. I should have realized a "nut" like Gadaffi would be that creepy.

            August 25, 2011 at 8:34 pm |
  29. Grant

    Can you say Stalker.

    August 25, 2011 at 8:24 pm |
    • Emily

      Hi Grant,
I think that it's really creepy that news that Gadhafi had those Condoleeza Rice photos, etc.
Seems like he was more focused on her as an African female....I can't image what she must be thinking!

    Hello everyone.

Hurricane Irene looks to be a very dangerous situation. I hope no one tries to ride this one out. I've read detailed accounts of the Hurrican of '38 that Anderson spoke of and the storm surge is especially dangerous. Be safe, don't try to ride it out.

    August 25, 2011 at 8:20 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

      Hi Janis!!!
You're right, That will be dangerous for crews and Hope that they will take cover while hurricane Irene!!!!!!! Anderson is also right.

      August 25, 2011 at 8:24 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Yes, it certainly looks like a very dangerous storm. My little sister lives on the outer banks. I tried to reach her cell and just got message. I have heard it is Mandatory evacuation, but she does Not like to leave and i don't know if they can Make her!

      August 25, 2011 at 8:28 pm |

Thank you Janis and you are right i am very worried about her- she is quite stubborn.
However i left a strong and loving message begging her to evacuate with her cat.

          August 25, 2011 at 8:55 pm |
  33. Starr, formerly know as vincent

Gadaffi is truly delusional if he thinks that millions are going to fight for him!

The takeover of most of Tripoli apparently "does not compute" in his and perhaps his sons minds.

I pray they find them sooon,

    August 25, 2011 at 8:17 pm |
  34. Sharon Hastings

I wish they would find Gadhafi very soon and hopefully that will bring a halt to alot of the battles and bloodshed.
