Rewriting History: Join the Live Chat

Two republican Presidential hopefuls, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, signed a controversial marriage pledge. Part of the pledge compared the family situation of African-American children living under slavery to african-american kids today. The conclusion: black slave children had stronger families under slavery. its factually false. We'll go through fine print, something the Bachmann campaign claims they didn't do. There's also the political backpedaling. We're Keeping Them Honest. Also tonight, news details on what will happen with Casey Anthony is released from jail in six days.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

    Anderson,
I don't think Casey Anthony would have freedom for sure, I am postive that she would do it again, I also disagree with jurors that she is not guilty as well.

They may not wait until Sunday to move her elsewhere. She could easily be moved sooner and by the time that info got out, it would be too late for the media to swarm.

I still can't get over that all 12 jurors were unanimous to acquit. I can see a hung jury maybe but this was a true shock.

She probably does not realize that she will be in danger outside of prison.

There will never be a recovery until corporate America decides to put proper pricing on things and Jobs come Back. Why aren't we asking Why did all of the companies sell out America??? Profits won't be all that good when there is no one left to buy anything...

@Jane the President has been involved in direct meetings, calls and through the meetings that the Rep's walked out on with Biden and others. He has steadily worked with all the leaders of Congress to find solutions without getting to this point.

I'm not trying to be one-sided–but the Republicans don't seem to do much until they absolutely have to–the deadline is only a few weeks away.

I think it is Shameful that Republicans & some Democrats are not Patriotic enough to work out a "deal" that is so important to our economy!
I, for one, am truly tired of the politicians who continue to subbornly "dig in their heels" on their supposed principles instead of working for the American people.

I find it interesting as to who each Party is blaming for the fact that they are unable to work out a deal. Also, the fact that this bit about Michelle Bachman signing or not signing this paper is out distracting (some) from this issue today.

Why does Boehner have to ask Americans what they want. Why doesn't Harry Reid or Barack Obama have to ask Americans about it? Republicans only control one part of Congress. Democrats control the Senate and the White House. The President has only now become engaged, something he should have been doing months ago.

Anderson, it's like the double edged sword argument....if Bachman signed the document knowingly, it is reprehensible regarding her views regarding African Americans. It is equally reprehensible that she signed something without reviewing it...do we want a President, Congresswoman capable of binding us to law who doesn't read the fine print and binds us with undesirable interests attached?!?

The President said today that taxes won't be raised this year or next year, but probably in 2013. Is it just a coincidence that those increases won't occur until AFTER his potential re-election? This seems like a similar scheme as ObamaCare, where the really terrible parts of it will not kick in until after the 2012 election.

The economy is doing a slow shrink – just like an old party baloon. I blame the previous Republican administration for the state of the economy. The economy is not coming back to the way it was when everyone was living on their future income. Republicans have no credit with me blaming Obama for any of this. Where are the jobs? Where you sent them Republicans – overseas!!

    July 11, 2011 at 10:21 pm |

Yes Janis. The economy was so easy to trash and so hard now to fix. It's going to take a long time.

      Hi Janis, excellent post!

Recent polling demonstrates that the majority of the American people Do blame Bush & his Congress for the debt we are in. And, in my opinion, they should!

However, either way, our present Congress Needs to cooperate with each other & the President Now, before the economic problems become completely unmanageable.

It's offensive b/c (1) the foundation wrote" Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American President". It compared stats from 1860 to stats from 2005 (technically Bush II's era) and (2) it does not take into account the very real fact that the child may be (a) a product of master-slave rape, (b) have one or both of his parents sold, beat or killed right before his/her eyes, (c) the child may be sold to another owner thus being ripped away from his/her parents or (d) the child would grow up to endure the inability to be free, read or write, legally marry or to excert protection over his/her own children. OFFENSIVE INDEED...

It is frightening that someone with such and narror point of view want to be the leader of a melting pot of cultures and belief. Not possible. Not to mention their lack of knowledge about our countries history. What is really scarey is that people listen to them and believe. Talk about sheep.

Haven't we been here before (and very recently)–where both sides of the aisle dig in and everyone cries that the sky is falling and then at the 11th hour they do a deal (which is invariably a rotten one) and then no one is still happy???

Canto is trying to get Boehner's jobe Borhener is realizing he doesn't have he power he needs and is trying to keep his job and most of the Republicans signed no new taxes, even if something is not a tax increase making thier proposal as 100% our way or there is no way. The only one trying to work this thing through is the President.

    July 11, 2011 at 10:16 pm |

We sure have the rest of the world watching what we will be doing about the debt reduction problem. Republicans appear to be very obstinate about not raising taxes for wealthy. I wonder if they realize how ludicrous they appear on this issue.

I agree with the Panel, Anderson, & the many comments on this blogs RE: the reality of history & how Offensive this kind of "pledge" is.
Qualifactions of Presidential candidates definely requres much better scrutiny of Any documents signed!!

    July 11, 2011 at 10:16 pm |
  29. Tybie

The dumbing down of American politicians boggles the Canadian mind! The offensive content of the "pledge" is second only to the offensiveness of a supposedly literate adult signing something they a) didn't read, or b) didn't understand.

jaycee dugard situation is absolutely tragic. I seriously doubt she will ever have a normal life. How would you answer the questions when her kids ask... who and where is daddy?

    July 11, 2011 at 10:13 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

      Nina,
It was prisioner who kidnapped Jaycee, that was her prisioner raped her 2 babies as well.

      July 11, 2011 at 10:18 pm |
      • Nina

Agreed.. and how could you tell that to your children??? That was my point!

        July 11, 2011 at 10:24 pm |
    • Emily

I really hope that the rest of Jayee Dugaard's life will be great, Nina. After all, it was all that she knew in her life to a certain point. When people say, a "normal life", for her it was "normal". I hope that her future, and that of her children, will be happy and health. She deserves to be happy.

      July 11, 2011 at 10:22 pm |
      • Nina

"She deserves to be happy." Of course she does. But to move on emotionally from the trauma of being raped twice a day since a kid by some old man and locked up...

she will hopefully be able to grieve her loss of childhood and 18 years of her life.

        July 11, 2011 at 10:28 pm |
        • Emily

Of course, it's not something that would be easy to live with or come to terms with. I'm sure that she has received much help, and not just the type that comes in a "Get Well Card", only. The Human Spirit is truly something. I can see her as a survivor and not a victim or her (horribly reprehensible) circumstances. She is after all, a mom. btw, I was not suggesting that you didn't want her to be happy or healthy.

Anyone who stoops to a comparison to "Nazis" or "Slavery", just prove they don't really have a valid argument!
(unless discussing one of those two topics)

    July 11, 2011 at 10:12 pm |
  33. Sharon Hastings

Yes, it definitely is offensive. Remember, there are people who don't think the holocaust ever happened. Moreover, it is VERY important that we face the realities of life, whatever they really are, so that we can learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.

    Good evening everyone.
I sure wouldn't vote for anyone who would sign something without reading it. Obviously, she must have trusted someone to steer her in this. Again, her circle of trust has some flaws, also. No vote from this independent.

Let me get this right. She didn't have time to read it but she still signed it? I would think that people wanting to be president would read thing before they sign them...

    July 11, 2011 at 10:10 pm |

ANY one who signs something without reading it first should automatically be disqualified as a candidate!

What's with these "pledges" anyway?? Sort of a "belonging to the club" or what??

    July 11, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
    • Emily

I was thinking about that, Sharon. It sounds like a fancy way of signing themselves over to others, since there are financial caps. It reminds me of things we did as kids. It's not the sort of thing that I think is appropriate for those who are looking to run for the top sort of the government. (promising to sell yourself to the highest bidder?)

This seems like it was done to ignore real issues. It's very disturbing, as I have a feeling that Michelle Bachman is starting to believe the things she is saying. (rewriting history)
