Rewriting History: Join the Live Chat

Two republican Presidential hopefuls, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, signed a controversial marriage pledge. Part of the pledge compared the family situation of African-American children living under slavery to african-american kids today. The conclusion: black slave children had stronger families under slavery. its factually false. We'll go through fine print, something the Bachmann campaign claims they didn't do. There's also the political backpedaling. We're Keeping Them Honest. Also tonight, news details on what will happen with Casey Anthony is released from jail in six days.

2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links

Great show so far. Kudos, AC, for that comment about why no one should be making references to Nazis or slavery during a political discussion. The best political figures should not even need to use such extreme references just to demonize their opponents. You're right- it is the easy way out compared to keeping it civil and pointing out their opponent's stances on the political issues. It's also great to see a non-Casey-centered show, and returning to the important issues. 🙂

Rep. Bachmann and former Sen. Santorum are both experienced politicians – they both would have recognized the downside of this paragraph if they had read it. The fact that they have chosen aides who failed to recognize the meaning of this paragraph and allowed their names to be associated with it says a lot about their standards in choosing staff for important positions. This shows why neither is qualified to be President – a job in which a careless mistake caused by inattention or or poor advice from an unqualified staffer can lead to much worse than bad publicity.

Octomom made some very bad decisions motivated by very immature thinking, but now she has all those kids and she is trying the best she can to do right by them. She wound up a single mom raising 8 kids, can't imagine. I'm tired when I have my 2 youngest grandkids for a couple days.

Jaycee Dugard does seem to have incredible inner strength for someone who was kidnapped at such a young age.

Thanks Megan! He must be feeling really guilty! (if only I didn't throw him the ball, or just a little harder..)
Really very sad. Of course, it's not his fault at all. He'll never forget that moment, however.

It is still too early for jaycee dugard. She is still in shock and trying to cope with her life. Give it 5 or 10 years. Hopefully she will be able to grieve the loss of her life for so many years....

God bless Jaycee Dugard! I agree, she should Not let "him" allow her to have rage or anyother emotion of hers.

Jaycee is truly a remarkable young woman! She will always have my admiration.

"she should Not let "him" allow her to have rage or any other emotion of hers."

Yes, Starr, that would be best case scenario. However, it would be best for her to be able to grieve her loss so she can be set free and move on. I suspect she has learned to emotionally shut down in order to cope. That is a problem as she will struggle with intimate relationships and fear closeness with men.

    Anderson,

You are completely right that people do a complete disservice to those who experienced the horrors of slavery and the Nazis when they compare politicians or political issues to them. My wife and I recently visited the Dachau concentration camp. To see the things and hear the stories of what took place there convinced me that anyone who would make those types of comparisons truly do not have any perspective.

    Greetings everyone,

I don't understand how did this got into a marriage pledge to indicate that black slave children had stronger families under slavery. What is the basis or benefit for this, if not to praise slavery to some extent? Were there any other comparing besides the African American families in this pledge?
