Letters to the President: #896 'Happy Independence Day'

Reporter's Note: President Obama is celebrating the Fourth of July, possibly by rereading all my letters to the White House since last year…or maybe not.

Dear Mr. President,

My wife makes this great cake every Fourth of July. She arranges these slices of pound cake in a shallow pan, smothers them in whipped cream, then makes a flag pattern on top with strawberries and blueberries. It is delicious!

Usually she whips it up the day before the holiday, and then we slice into it after we barbeque. When you are all loaded up with burgers, corn on the cob, shrimp, watermelon, and whatever else we’ve made, I must say it is the perfect coup de grace. Most times there is enough left to have seconds after we’ve gone to the fireworks display down on the National Mall.

For several years we have talked about riding our bicycles to the fireworks and this year we may finally get it done. It’s about an 18-mile round trip, and everyone is in decent shape for the ride, so the distance is not really the issue. We’ve always been a little wary, even with lights on our bikes of going so far in the dark on a night when a lot of people are driving around. But this year we think we may have mapped out a solid route that is mainly on bike paths through the woods, so we may give it a whirl.

What are you going to do? You have a fabulous location for watching the fireworks that is for sure. Although, I think we may have done you one better: Usually we come down along Independence Avenue and sit along the curb with the fireworks bursting almost right over our heads. A couple of years back they were exploding unusually low in the sky and we had flaming debris raining down around us several times. It was the best!

Anyway, we’ll mark out a little extra space nearby in case you decide you want to come out and join us. But, uh…you’ll have to fight us if you want some of the leftover cake! Ha! Happy Fourth!

Obama you must be happy in the fact that you have split this country in half. You call anyone who does not agree with you a racist. The true racist is you . I only hope you are thrown out and do not win a 2d term.
