Obama Announces Troop Withdrawal Plan For Afghanistan: Join the Live Chat

We have breaking news on President Obama's plan for drawing down troop levels in Afghanistan. There was lots of upbeat language in the president's speech tonight, but what's the reality on the ground? We're Keeping Them Honest. Plus, breaking news in the Casey Anthony trial. Gary Tuchman talked with the attorney for Casey's parents. Find out if they think she's innocent or guilty.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

The thought of driving around with a dead body in the trunk makes me sick. It is really morbid and disgusting.

    June 22, 2011 at 10:41 pm |
    • Nina

For the average person, driving around with your Dead Daughter in the trunk would be sickening; however Casey is not the normal parent or person! I suspect... No conscious is evident in this individual.

Of course the parents do not want their daughter put to death!

Only Gary T. could get such a scoop – thanks for the info Gary!

This trial breaks my heart as such a truly beautiful child was killed, however her life was ended.

My heart goes out to George and Cindy Anthony. This is so tragic.

Hi Sharon, i agree with you. It is tragic that the father is being accused of so many things that have not yet been proven.
And, so far, the defense has not proven any of the accusations are true.

      June 22, 2011 at 10:43 pm |
  17. Nina

That must be so difficult for the parents to admit that their daughter killed her daughter. Very sad.

I truly pray that NY will pass the gay marriage act.

Equal rights for all in NY State and across the country!

I agree that all chuchs should be allowed to refuse to marry anyone that they are not comfortable with. The bottom line is marriage, across the country is a Civil/legal issue, Not a religious issue.

I agree that NY passing a same sex marriage bill, it could have huge affect on the issue!
    Great panel discussion.

    June 22, 2011 at 10:25 pm |
    • Mike, formerly from Syracuse

A law approving civil unions would accomplish the same legal equality without the lightning rod of calling it marriage.

      June 22, 2011 at 10:27 pm |
      • Starr, formerly know as vincent

I gree that word marriage is a sticking point for many people.

However, gay marriage is also a "civil rights" issue too. Gay people should Not have to be put into a special category for the right to partner & marry.

The fact that the 33,000 troops will be out right before the election is no coincidence. It is very distressing the the Commander-in-Chief plays roulette with our troops' lives for political reasons.

    June 22, 2011 at 10:19 pm |
    • Nina

removing our troops from Afghanistan is very complicated. I see no positive way. Remove too many, could create increased danger for those left there. Removing to few, and it will take forever... Removing all, would create chaos in Afghanistan. What a mess!

      June 22, 2011 at 10:22 pm |
      • Starr, formerly know as vincent

Agree, the Afganistan was is complex and difficult to see how we will succeed. However, it is time for some of our troops to come home.
Also agree that this is "political" issue as well.

Fareed, David, and Gloria are 100 % right answer!!!!!! Good point!

    June 22, 2011 at 10:16 pm |
  30. Starr, formerly know as vincent

Fareed makes an excellent point re: Gen. Patraeus (sp?) moving to the CIA. There is something to be said for that appointment re: moving more towards counter intelligence vs. troop surges.

I truly hope that Pres. Karsi can be ultimately replace, by election, with a much better leaders, less corruption.

Negotiations with the Taliban could be very tricky and i don't see a way yet, where they would be willing to cooperate with the West.

Hopefully our continued presence in Afganistan will help keep Pakistan somewhat stable.

    Excellent panel discussion!

David Gergen is 100% right. Obama has twice ignored good advice from his generals. McCrystal said we needed 80,000 troops in 2009, and got 30,000. Now he again ignores advice, Results on the ground don't reflect the type of success that happened with the Iraq surge.

Hi Anderson! Hi Everyone! Good evening.

    June 22, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
  37. Mike, formerly from Syracuse

It's interesting how Obama measures success. US military deaths are UP by more than 200% over the rate under Bush. If the plan was working , casualties would have dropped like they did during the Iraq surge. This is purely a political move, not a reflection of battlefield success.

    June 22, 2011 at 10:07 pm |
    • Lori - CA

      It is political.

I am delighted that the President is bringing home some of the troops from Afganistan.

However, i am concerned if we take too many away too fast, we will loose all of the gains we have made.

Afganistan has numerous mineral resources, that can allow that country to develop a good economy if the country is secure.

Needless to say, there are many, many issues re: pulling out the troops, the expense of the war at the top of the list!
