Syria's Bloody Crackdown: Join the Live Chat

Today there were massive new demonstrations across Syria. And, now the Obama administration is taking the first early steps in preparing a case to possibly indict Syria's dictator, Bashar al-Assad, in the International Criminal Court. The allegations: human rights abuses. Plus, a U.S. border patrol agent winds up dead and no government agency is willing to admit responsibility. It's all connected to a huge gun sting gone bad. More than 1,800 guns crossed into Mexico and fell into the wrong hands. We're Keeping Them Honest. And, why testimony centered around a "pig in a blanket" in the Casey Anthony trial.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

another twist (and a possible explanation for the "out of the blue" wild accusation of the father sexually assaulting casey) ... what if the parents would "do anything" do keep their daughter from getting the death penalty – what if the father allowed himself to have these absurd accusations raised against him by his daughter (in order to contribute to some probable cause for not having casey get the death penalty) – they would know the truth between them – to the parents the scrutiny of the public about that possibility might not be as bad as losing their daughter. crazy thought for a crazy case.

    June 17, 2011 at 10:49 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

I think you may be right. The parents have lost their grand daughter, they don't want to lose t heir daughter too.

Like Anderson said, i can't imagine how they are getting through this gut wrenching trial.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:52 pm |
    • Heather - Spokane, WA

The fact that at the beginning of this her parents had covered for her it would not surprise me if he allowed that to happen

      June 17, 2011 at 10:54 pm |
  10. Heather - Spokane, WA

The prosecution does have a reason to believe that Casey had murdered her daughter....she was the last person known to be around Caylee

    Thank you Anerson,
Please do not forget about the people in Syria, thank you for shing light on the turth, and standing by freedom.

    June 17, 2011 at 10:45 pm |
  12. lisal -canada

and we can assume that casey could have used her dad's phone to make a call? the "surprise witness" didn't mention anything about not knowing casey (or her brother, for that matter – perhaps the brother used the dad's phone – this case is so full of surprises ... there's another twist – a connection between the BROTHER and the surprise witness ...)

    June 17, 2011 at 10:43 pm |
  13. Heather - Spokane, WA

The defense is picking at anything they can because they know their client is guilty and the evidence is so overwhelming that they otherwise have no sort of defense to use!

    June 17, 2011 at 10:42 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

There has to be a more honest way to go about it though, it seems to me....not by trying to blame someone else like a meter man.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:44 pm |
  14. Janis

I dislike this case. I'm sorry for the tragedy but I hate this case because of the feeding frenzy that's gone along with it and here I am blogging along. Ugh.

How did Gary get this assignment? He seems such a gentle soul, this story has got to be very difficult for him.

I know i can't watch the trial at all, and often turn the sound down when there are reports on or about the trial.

Even so, Gary does great reporting.
And these "fights" are absolutely absurd!

    June 17, 2011 at 10:40 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

Good point, Starr. I've wondered how Gary is doing with it too.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:43 pm |
    • Nina

Sometimes you can be a gentle soul, but cognitively reframe your job in order to conduct it.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:44 pm |
      • Starr, formerly know as vincent

I agree, that's why i said Gary, none the less, is an excellent reporter.

        June 17, 2011 at 10:48 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

      Starr,
Good point there, Gary Tuchman is coverage for Caylee who murder by her own mom. He is so busy this week...... He is doing great job there in Orlando, Florida...... He is so best can give us update from court.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:49 pm |
  16. Janis

So now the meter reader did it according to the defense? I suppose they will cast doubt on as many others as they can so the jury isn't quite sure who did it.

    June 17, 2011 at 10:40 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

I understand the defense's job is to 'defend' a person, but why can't they do it more honestly? They know the meter man didn't do anything. Why can't they just try to defend her as a crazy, mixed up gal who should not be killed, if that is their goal?

      June 17, 2011 at 10:42 pm |
  17. lisal -canada

i don't really watch the trial, so this might be already known, but we always hear that they assume caylee died on the same day as the last time "she was seen" – but how do they actually know that was the day/s she died? just because no one they know of other than those we know about saw her, that doesn't mean she was automatically dead. doesn't that mean there is actually a two or three week window there? (or is this already known...)

    June 17, 2011 at 10:39 pm |
  18. Nina

It seems that the prosecution is being aided by the Defense witness… Amusing!

I do think the government has gotten so big with so many redundancies, Agencies don't know what each other is doing – or, it's not their job – they think another agency is monitoring it – I'm sure the list goes on causing alot of errors and taxpayer money waste.
I do think the government needs to be streamlined. It's alot of work and who could look at the big picture to determine what to do. Big job! ATF is a good place to start

The fighting ou side of the Anthony court case is ridiculous. Stay at home because you are not helping this case at all!

    June 17, 2011 at 10:27 pm |

People are getting a little too creepy weird with this case in my opinion. I agree with you.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:30 pm |

I think so too, though I imagine there have always been creepy, ghoulish people who like gorey detail.

        June 17, 2011 at 10:32 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

I simply cannot believe it...or don't want to. Who would stand in line or sleep overnight to get into a public murder trial of a child anyway? And then to escalate like that....I hope these people are not responsible for others!!

      June 17, 2011 at 10:30 pm |
    • Nina

Could never understand that attraction of siting in a court regarding the death of child.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:31 pm |
      • Nancy in Oregon

Or any other murder that does not involve anyone you know at all. The OJ trial comes to mind. People seem to lose their humanity and become kinda creepy 'fans' of something that has celebrity to it.

        June 17, 2011 at 10:34 pm |
    • Lori - CA

The people who have to be there do not want to be there. Why would anyone else want to attend a court case?

      June 17, 2011 at 10:32 pm |
      • Nancy in Oregon

Exactly, Lori. My thoughts too. I also wonder, don't these people have a life?! Who is watching their kids or their dogs or their job while they are pursuing this kind of thrill?!!

        June 17, 2011 at 10:35 pm |
    • Starr, formerly know as vincent

I agree! I can't believe why people want to get into such a sad and morbid trial to begin with.

    Evening Anderson & Team 360.

    Hello blogger friends!

The present Justice Dept. does not seem to be very effective at all. And, one of the worst places to lose automatic weapons would be in Mexico.

Dont you just love all the holes in our so called 'gun laws'? Im sure when the fore fathers wrote the constitution they didn't mean for them to go this far out of control

    June 17, 2011 at 10:21 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

I totally agree. They never intended this sort of running-amuck with guns.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:23 pm |

I agree you both make very good points.

Losing 1,800 weapons??? I call that completely inept … and outrageous!

    June 17, 2011 at 10:15 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

That's a lot of guns, not just a handful.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:19 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Yup!!!!!!! I agree with you, Nina....... Very serious right now, Yikes!!!!

      June 17, 2011 at 10:23 pm |
  35. Janis

When I found out that most of the guns in the Mexican cartels came from the US, I couldn't believe it. These are the kind of things that need to be exposed about how the US is conducting business with some foreign countries. These guns have killed American citizens. Crazy. Why don't they put microchips in every gun with tracking ids? If UPS can track a package around the world, why can't US track guns? If and Iphone can track it's own whereabouts, why not a gun?

    June 17, 2011 at 10:15 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

What a good idea, Janis. Why would a law abiding gun owner mind that? He might even appreciate it if his gun (like his dog or something else) is stolen or lost. That seems a very helpful system to me. Am I missing something? Is it too hard to do for some reason?

      June 17, 2011 at 10:18 pm |
      • Janis

Somebody would probably figure out how to disable the chip. Need a brainiac to develop it I suppose. I think the NRA would likely object too.

        June 17, 2011 at 10:23 pm |
      • Heather - Spokane, WA

i think its a great idea too, but you have the people who love to throw fits over 'their right to privacy' but there is no 'right to privacy' in the constitution. That is just an unofficial 'write in' that the laws decided to follow, so you will unfortunately have those people throwing fits because they are worried about 'the government watching them' or 'trying to take control of them'

        June 17, 2011 at 10:27 pm |

i wonder the same thing too sometimes – the courage displayed by the protesters is nothing short of amazing when they know, as does the rest of the world, that they will still be facing the same regime in the same situation using the same brutality – we are just watching but they are living this day after day – pretty amazing displays of courage indeed

    June 17, 2011 at 10:12 pm |

Evening everyone, sorry I'm late! We either really need to do something there or Gadhafi needs to step down immediately. This is a genocide!

Good evening, Heather. It's Syria they're discussing right now (but the whole ME looks pretty distraught right now, for sure.)

      June 17, 2011 at 10:13 pm |
      • Heather - Spokane, WA

Thanks for the edit! Both need something done about them because so many innocent people are dying all because their government feels they need to remind everyone who is in charge. Too many stupid deaths because of a stupid government!

        June 17, 2011 at 10:18 pm |
        • Nancy in Oregon

Wow, even beyond stupid too...archaic and barbaric, it seems to me. What century are they living in?!!!

          June 17, 2011 at 10:21 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

I agree with you, Heather....... both are also dictationship as well, Nice see you join with us so late. 🙂

      June 17, 2011 at 10:21 pm |
  40. Janis

These dictators still think the only way of restoring order is to kill everyone who rebels. The killing will continue on and on because these people want a different life other than oppression.

    June 17, 2011 at 10:10 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

Isn't it amazing, Janis? It's as if they are living in another time, thinking that physical oppression and fear can just put things back to 'rights'...not having any real insights about the increased awareness that the rest of the world has about their whole situation!

      June 17, 2011 at 10:15 pm |
  41. Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

    Anderson,
OMG!!!!!!!! That was so shocking news I have heard, I agree with you........ I am going to tell Syria leader take step down or he will find guilty murder own people!!!!!! That was so bad situation right now. My heart goes out to Syria's people!! Very sad indeed!!!!! 🙁

    June 17, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
    • Janis

Yes, it makes me very sad too.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:10 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

It's pretty unthinkable, isn't it Megan? In today's world, it's just hard to imagine...if for no other reason than everyone can watch now, everyone can see what is happening. Unlike in the days of Hitler's atrocities...there was no satellite TV then. How do these barbaric people think their archaic ways of handling problems will fly, these days?

      June 17, 2011 at 10:11 pm |
      • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Yes, Nancy,.... That is so unthinkable I know.... Very sad... I agree with you, Good point there, Nancy.......

        June 17, 2011 at 10:17 pm |

So many Syrians are risking their lives to get information out to the rest of the world. Very courageous.

    June 17, 2011 at 10:06 pm |
    • Nina

I agree. If this nefarious regime gets a hold of these people, I am sure it would be certain death

      June 17, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
      • Nancy in Oregon

After torture, of course. How barbaric parts of the world still are.

        June 17, 2011 at 10:24 pm |
    • Nancy in Oregon

It sure is, Janis. I don't know that I'd be so brave, given the government's M.O. It might depend on whether or not I had family to be concerned about, as the little boy's father had.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
    • Heather - Spokane, WA

It is very courageous! They know what they are up against and they need help so they know the only way to get help is to get the word out there because no one in the higher ups there is going to say a word

      June 17, 2011 at 10:15 pm |
  43. Nancy in Oregon

What is the next step after charging someone with war crimes? Does someone go in and physically arrest the person?

    June 17, 2011 at 10:05 pm |
    • Janis

That's what I always wonder. How do you arrest somebody with an army?

      June 17, 2011 at 10:07 pm |
    • Nina

      Good question, Nancy

      June 17, 2011 at 10:07 pm |
    • Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Good question Nancy.....I think that U.N, will take lift ban or sancations against Syria leader, Remember that one of dictorship was arrested by police in Kosovo, and It will take long way process, That is very serious crime against own people and I think he will remove his position (president) as well.

      June 17, 2011 at 10:13 pm |
  44. Janis

I hope that the world will do something about all these atrocities in Syria. It's terrible.
