Letters to the President: #872 'In need of a ninja'

Reporter's Note: I’ve written a letter to President Obama every day he’s been in office. Hey, maybe the Post Office is going to give up on weekends, but not I!

Dear Mr. President,

Did you see me? I was out for a fairly long run in this scorching heat and I heard sirens, saw motorcycles, and suddenly there you were! Well, I guess it was you. I haven’t checked your schedule to see for sure, but it was near your daughter’s school and there was obviously some kind of end-of-year celebration going on, so I assumed.

I waved. So either you saw it, or the Ambassador of Whoknowsistan was very confused by this sweaty white guy running and hollering alongside his motorcade. Ha! Then again, like I said, it was pretty hot. Maybe the whole thing was a hallucination.

Speaking of hallucinations, did you see this news about Newt Gingrich’s campaign? Folks are bailing out from that camping trip like the tent is on fire. He insists that he’s going to keep soldiering on to win the Republican primary, but I can’t imagine that it will be easy.

On the other hand, I often think the team of folks that gather around a campaign can sometimes be the candidate’s worst enemies. If they encourage him too much, they can blind him to his own mistakes. If they raise too many questions, they can make him doubt himself. And if they are too much in the middle, they can produce a highly functional, utterly boring…and losing…effort. It’s tricky stuff, but I’ll tell you this: It applies just as much to people who are seeking re-election.

Anyway, I’m all over the map with my thoughts today. Personally, I blame it on a car commercial. Have you seen that ad for Honda that features that song “Hoodie Ninja”? Every time it comes on, that tune starts looping in my head and I can’t make it stop.

So call if you get a moment. Perhaps you can help me think of something else.

Regards,
Tom
