Reporter's Note: President Obama is running for re-election. I am running to get this letter in the mail. Ha!
Dear Mr. President,
I have a suggestion for how you can meet the rising tide of Republicans getting into/ thinking about getting into/threatening to get into the 2012 presidential election: Nothing.
I know that a lot of your Democratic pals just can’t wait to fire up the blogs, hop onto the talk shows, and start attacking every GOPer who dares to measure the Oval Office for curtains. That’s fine. But I think this nation is flat out tired of politics. We’re tired of the ads, tired of the coverage, tired of the debates, tired of the endless sense that government is only about who wins or loses the next election instead of…uh…governing.
I think there is nothing better that you, or, for that matter, any serious Republican challenger, can do right now than focus on doing a good job as a leader. Sure, all of you have to raise some money. Go ahead. But let the campaigning wait.
Any decision that anyone makes about whom they are going to vote for now is likely to be reconsidered dozens of times anyway. Lots of flaming “right now” issues will burn out long before people go to the polls. Sure, the economy in general will be an issue. We can bet on that. But a lot of the details will change dramatically and any hard position staked out now will end up shifting like a dinghy in a gale.
So instead of wasting your time or ours trying to triangulate voters this early on, imagine how powerful a candidate might look who just works hard at his or her job until we are three months from the vote. Then the candidate stands up and says, “Oh yeah, there is an election coming. I forgot. Well, look at my record. Let me tell you what I’ve done to help you, while others were running all over trying to help themselves.”
Could be a winner. Call if you get a moment.
