Trump claims Obama birth certificate 'missing'

Editor's note: Tune in to AC360° Tuesday beginning at 10 p.m. ET to see the remainder of Gary Tuchman's investigation into President Barack Obama's birthplace. Tuchman speaks with Hawaii’s Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie who says he knew Obama’s parents decades ago. Abercrombie weighs in on the controversy over Obama’s birthplace and explains why he has not released Obama’s birth certificate like he said he would.

(CNN) – Real estate mogul Donald Trump's latest claim about President Obama's birth certificate is that it's missing.

"Well I've been told very recently, Anderson, that the birth certificate is missing," Trump told CNN's Anderson Cooper Monday. "I've been told that it's not there or it doesn't exist. And if that's the case it's a big problem."

When asked from whom he received the information, Trump said he didn't want to say and that he feels bad about the situation.

"I'd love for him to produce his birth certificate so that you can fight one-on-one," Trump said in an interview set to air Monday. "If you look at what he's doing to fuel prices, you can do a great fight one-on-one, you don't need this issue."

CNN's Gary Tuchman also interviewed the former director of the Hawaii Department of Health, who said she has seen the original birth certificate in the vault at the Department of Health.

In 2008, the Obama campaign released an official document called a "certification of live birth" which indicates he was born in Hawaii. This document, which is a computerized abstract of his birth information that the State of Hawaii issues to individuals requesting their birth records, satisfies proof-of-birth requirements for various federal matters, including obtaining a passport. Several news organizations as well as the Annenberg Fact Check Project viewed the document first-hand and verified that it contained the official raised seal as well as a signature stamp of the state registrar.

Trump has made national headlines by questioning the president's birthplace, even saying he has hired investigators in Hawaii to examine the situation. The reality TV star is mulling a bid for the White House and expects to make a final decision at the end of May, after the latest season of "Celebrity Apprentice" concludes.

The document which was shown was ROUTINELY issued by Hawaii to parents whose children were NOT born in Hawaii, without requiring ANY proof that the child was even born in the United States. Furthermore, the laws in effect at the date of his birth would make him NOT a US citizen if he was born outside of the US. But ABCNNBCBS and their dead-tree fellow travelers might have to stop brewing that fresh hot black tea if they were to admit this. And it looks so quaint dribbling down their chins like that...

That's it? If the former director of public health saw the birth certificate, why is the current governor having such a time finding it? This is stupid. if the man is a natural born US citizen, why doesn't he just show the birth certificate and move on? I guess the problem lies, no pun intended, with whether or not they will try to present another forgery, as was the certification of live birth.

Show the birth certificate and let the campaigning begin.

Bullet points about Hawaii's governor's futile search for Obama's long-form certificate, every point coming from the stories about it. Search engine the stories yourself: 1) He couldn't find it. 2) He found an affidavit used for midwife births signed by the maternal grandparents citing their home address as his birthplace. 3) Only their signature appears; no midwife signed. 4) It would ensure he had US citizenship. 5) Obama said he was born in a hospital, but not which one. (Do you know where you were born? Obama doesn't.) 6) He has never said he was a midwife birth. 7) The affidavit is what the newspapers used for the birth announcement. 8) It is what the former Dept. of Health director cites as "proof" Obama was born in Hawaii. 9) It is what "documents" the Cert. of Live Birth posted on the internet. 10) The gov said "I was there" when Obama was born. 11) We now know, thanks to Hawaii News Now, that the gov meant he was in Hawaii at the same time as Obama's alleged birth, NOT that he was with the Obamas as he has previously mislead people into believing. 12) No hospital records his birth. 13) No doctors, nurses, or midwives, attest either.-30-

Thank God for Donald Trump. He's bringing everyone up to speed on what's going on with Barack Obama, aka "Barry Soetoro": BO has no Hawaiian birth certificate, and stonewalling is his only defense! So the next question is, and all hell will break loose when "The Donald" finds out: Why is Barack Obama using a dead man's Social Security number? And why is the OMG ("Obama Media Group") shilling for him nonstop, in light of possible legally actionable fraud?

With all the serious issues that a president has to figure out and deal with these days do you think Donald Trump is ready to be president of The United States? A president should not stoop as low as ordinary citizens. He must be wiser and have more resolve about himself. To me Donald has already started on the wrong foot. Resolutions to serious problems is what we need not more game playing and finger pointing about stupid stuff. Thats whats wrong in Washington now. We need real problem solvers that malke fair, cautious and honest decisions. There is too much conflict of interest in their decisions. Party lines won't mean anything when the tables turn and everything is really out of control. At that point I guess they will just return to doing what got us in this mess. Start finger pointing all over again. We need true leaders with open minds about whatever comes their way.

Out of all the things in our great country.. Why the hell is he worried about nothing. That's why we are in the trouble we are now. We worry about everything except what's important. But while trump has everyone sidetracked I bet he's screwing people out of real estate

There is a massive cover up going on in Hawaii, with the former DOH lying that all one could ever get issued would be the "certification of live Birth" reporters need to stop accepting the word of these people and refer to the actual Hawaiian statute (which is 338-18, I believe) that states that Obama himself can obtain the long form.
Lucas Daniel Smith has sent every member of Congress a sworn statement that he has the long form with doctor's signature. Dr A'gawa from Mombasa, Kenya.

The main stream media are Obama's lackey's. They call those who want to see all of his records birthers. Well those political and media hacks that don't want to know the truth are the deniers of thruth.

I would rather be a constitutional birther than a unconstitutional denier.

Why are Trump's "investigators" taking so long? What are they doing over there all this time? If the original "long form" that everyone wants to see is really "In a vault" under lock and key, they aren't going to be able to ever see it. And they knew that before boarding a plane to go over. So what are they still doing? Hitting the beaches?

Trump says he can't believe what they are finding. OK, amaze me. What? What's the big secret we can't see or hear? Put up or shut up. Ditto to Obama.

Obama may have been born here, but the fact is, we have not seen the original birth certificate. There is clearly something the Obama camp does not want everyone to see on that document.

" This NOT true. I presented a certification of live birth to the passport office in Annapolis, MD, four years ago in order to obtain a passport for my daughter. It had her foot prints and was signed by the hospital. The passport office informed me that it was not an official document and that I needed to present a birth certificate from the State of Oklahoma period. I had thought all along that it was an official document, but it is most definitely NOT.

I live in Hawaii and have seen long form birth certificates from the same year as Obama. I think that there is something on this form that the President doesn't want released. The impact of having a seated President exposed as not eligible would be catastrophic. But, not addressing this issue will continue to fuel the suspicions of many and play into the hands of his opposition.

"see the remainder of Gary Tuchman's investigation into President Barack Obama's birthplace"

I've read his column and what a laugh it was. All so-called "investigations," of Obama's birth, by necessity it now seems, must resort to obfuscation and hearsay as Tuchman's does. Virtually nothing he presented as evidence would be allowed in a court of law. It is irresponsible journalism.

If Cooper was truly interested in keeping people honest, he would admit that he and his whole pathetic network have a transparent agenda to defend their love interest, Obama. And this conflict of interest motivates them to destroy Obama's enemies, like Trump, Palin, the Tea Party movement and the free people of the United States. Nothing this clown says holds any water with me. CNN has lost all credibility.

I commend CNN and Anderson Cooper for repeatedly and prominently reiterating that the appropriate Hawaii state officials have confirmed, unequicovally, that original documentation is on file with the Hawaii state government which beyond a reasonable doubt substantiates that Barack Obama was born in the United States.

The danger of the reckless and groundless accusations of Donald Trump and other so-called "birthers" is that people who hear the claims often enough start believing them.

Mr. Trump is right on this one... why won't they simply produce the birth certificate? Why is it under lock and key at the Department of Health? I guess the president of the United States can't even rise to the occasion of producing a simple certificate so how can we expect him to run the country when such pedestrian matters are beyond him and his staff, but then again, who could expect anything more.

Very Simple: This issue will not go away until Obama publishes his birth certificate for all to see. Mr. Obama, please publish your birth certificate as soon as possible so this can be cleared up. This is an unnecessarily divisive issue for our nation, and you can quickly and easily clear this up. The nation does not need this controversy. Thank you

I think Obama was born in Hawaii. However, I think it is suspicious that only Democrats make the claim that they have seen the original certificate, yet nobody can find it. You cant just take the word of people anymore, due to the political forces at work. I voted for & support the President, but he really needs to end the masquerade/suspence and show the original certificate. I can easily have a live birth certificate manufactured to my specs.if I paid for it.

What's with this birther thing??? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a native of the United States is one who was born in the United States (Hawaii is a State) or island areas, or born abroad to at least one parent who is a U.S. Citizen.
Ann Dunham, Barack OBama's mother, was born in Kansas, but that shouldn't be the issue. The fact is, OBama was born in the United States (Hawaii). If this country is looking to D. Trump to be our President, we have more trouble than the deficit.

Unbelievable. The fact that he's even bringing this stuff up shows us how unprepared he is for the White House. the reason there are dozens of obama lawyers fighting in courts all over the u.s. trying to prevent the release of this document is the same reason all of his school documents are sealed. there is something on these document that would be embarrassing to him. some people believe that he lists a different man as his father and others believe its because he describes himself as caucasian. more importantly though is the question as to "why" are his school records are sealed? was it because he was allowed to enter the universities he attended under affirmative action rules? i know of no other president or candidate for president that had all of his school records sealed. cnn was one of the media outlets that made a tremendous effort to embarass bush because of his college performance and yet never poked fun at john kerry even thought he didn't do as well as bush in school. why is obama treated differently? i believe its because he is a democrat and cnn lacks the credibility to treat him the same as any other candidate for president.

Look, in our legal system, we don't accept anyone saying they "saw" a document in lieu of the document itself. The very fact that Obama is not willing to allow the release of a certified copy of the full birth certificate is enough for any reasonable person to ask themselves what's being covered up. The way the story is being handled in the media, as if the doubter are crackpots, looks like part of the coverup to me.

The strongest point that can be made is that no evidence is required of birth in a specific location with the document provided. In other words, Hawaii has a low standard of proof. If Obama was seeking the "presidency" of Hawaii, I would say whatever standard they set is fine. However, Obama sought the presidency of the whole United States. Even though the documentation he has may satisfy some federal agencies for some purposes, the Constitution requires more.

I take the position that the birth record proof questions present a rebuttable presumption that Obama has vigorously fought against addressing. Even his family's friend, now Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie tried to clear things up by providing proof; but he could not. Every lawyer knows you never ask a question for which you do not know the answer. In the case of Obama, the logic is the same in not answering: He knows the answer and seeks to hide it because it undermines him politically or invalidates him Constitutionally to be president.

As an American, I have the right to expect my elected officials to meet their Constitutional requirements for the office they seek and hold or suffer the sanctions of law for fraudulently withholding that information and proof.

    April 26, 2011 at 1:21 pm |

The problem with the CNN article is that it treats this like immigration, unable to separate immigrants from illegal aliens. There's a difference with being a citizen and a natural born citizen. Gov Abercrombie saw Barack as a baby, but never in the hospital where he was born. There's a certificate of live birth, but that proves you're alive and a citizen, not where you were born.

For Obama et al to say that producing the birth certificate wouldn't change anybody's minds is a total copout. It's the only thing that can change anybody't mind since it's the only piece of evidence that matters.

A certificate of live Birth in Hawaii means very little and can be manufactured very easily. With big bucks, I imagine you can get a so-called valid Birth Certificate just about anywhere. What we have here is more "Wag the Dog". Next thing you know theyll be telling us he is 99.9 % white because his mother used Linco Bleach in her laundary. 0bama has never claimed the online birth document in any way ever.
How could people who call themselves journalists not ask that question?
Even the "we report, you decide" network has yet to ask if that certificate is in any way accurate. 0bama didn't put it on the internet, it was not on his campaign page and if you only go by his word that document does not exist. Do you think it is an accident he never vouched for it?

Obama was probably born in USA. However, he is hiding much of his past. Wrong father on birth certificate? Who knows. I think Obama will provide the BC as a October surprise. This will preempt the real discussion of "natural born" citizen. It will also hide many important things such as college records, passports and SSN. We have a impostor. However, I do not know for a fact that he was not born in the USA.
