Letters to the President: #822 'Seriously? Birthers? Again?'

Tom Foreman | BIO
AC360° Correspondent

Reporter's Note: The president once, long ago, asked for advice from the public. I’ve been writing to him ever since. Seems like one of us would have given up by now.

Dear Mr. President,

I may very well pull the hair out of my head if I have to hear one more of these discussions about whether you were born in the United States or not. I can not fathom why this issue continues to hang around and hang around like a teenage boy near cheerleader practice.

So far I have seen no evidence whatsoever - zero, zilch, nada - to support any kind of a claim that you are deceiving us about being born in Hawaii. But just as important, I’m not sure what could possibly convince your critics that you are a natural born American at this point anyway!

Seriously, let’s say you were shuffling through a kitchen drawer at the White House looking for some batteries for the remote, and suddenly you cried out, “Hey Michelle, turns out my birth certificate was in the drawer the whole time!”

Or say some previously unknown witness stumbled onto the scene to testify that he or she was there when you popped into the world.

I don’t think any of this would make the slightest difference in terms of quieting this storm of controversy. So, I’m afraid you are stuck with it. That said, I’m getting pretty close to the point that I’m just going to skip any story that even mentions it. Because I don’t have any doubts about the origins of these stories; they come from people who have never quite gotten over the shock of you being elected.

Call if you can.

Why do you spend so much time on Trump's request to see Obama's birth certificate? MORE IMPORTANT you said you had a copy of it right there and showed (?) it... NO YOU DIDN"T... I saw an official name and signature ... you did not zoom in on Obama's name and vital information. That was blurred and could not be read. Now I wonder if you really do have it – What you have done is create a question in my mind that he doesn't have a proper birth certificate...are you lying – why do you need to do that?
Please send me a true picture of his name, etc.
Also, I heard earlier that it is against the law in Hawaii to reveal any birth certificate? So how did you get one? Something's fishy.

I doubt the birthers have the intellectual capacity to start the rumor on Obama to shield McCain's place of birth. I would think that after 2+ years of Obama as President and the 2012 campaign season coming up that the birthers would have more pertinent issues to pay attention to. I doubt they will though – this issue is just too easy even though its false.

How the Birther thing started: John McCain was born in Panama. A long standing Republican tactic is to take your candidate's weakest point and accuse your opponent of it. John McCain: War Hero, Straight Talker, Stalwart Senator but not born in this country. Clearly a weak point point for the Senator, so a rumor starts that Senator Obama was not born in this country and no one questions Senator McCain's place of birth. The fact that Mr. Obama has an unusual name, brown skin etc., it was very easy for this lie to run rampant. People that watch FOX News hear it there, believe it and they will accept no evidence to the contrary. Now it's grown again and no one has linked Senator McCain's birthplace to the start of the whole BS thing!

Obama wasn't born in the US?!! here is whats going on, this was all pushed under the table by the Obama campaign so your average BRAINLESS RACIST CONSERVATIVES, would jump on it and make it their main focus, b.c what Obamas campain for 2012 will do is show his birth certificate right before elections and show the whole country and the world, how ignorant and racist most conservatives are!!!! in your face politics 101

The Governor of Hawaii has stated that Barrack Obama was born in the State of Hawaii and the certified certificate of his birth has been presented testifiying to the fact he was born in the State of Hawaii. There is no other evidence necessary to present to anyone to prove without any doubt President Barrack Obama was born in the State of Hawaii and is therefor a citizen of the United States of America. Case closed.
