Letters to the President: #780 'On to Oklahoma City'

Tom Foreman | BIO

Reporter's Note: I continue grinding down the miles on our most recent Building Up America tour, and grinding out the letters to the White House.

Dear Mr. President,

As I write today's letter I am on the highway from Tulsa to Oklahoma City, reacquainting myself with the Oklahoma countryside. I had forgotten the nicely rolling hills and the low tree cover in this area. It is really quite pleasant, especially since we are seeing the sun now for the first time since we hit the road on Sunday. (Actually I came out on this trip from Atlanta where it was rainy over the weekend, so I guess for me the gray spell has lasted even longer.)

Had an excellent morning with a pair of entrepreneurs; the folks selling those wacky shaped rubber band bracelets called Zany Bandz and now those bright, wrap around Slap Watches.

They were inspiring with their "the economy be damned, we're moving ahead!" attitude. I have found that a lot during our Building Up America trips. While the recession undoubtedly hurt many people, some of those who have weathered it best are those who have in large part ignored the setbacks and pressed on.

Sure, they have often adjusted their plans to accommodate the risks inherent in this economic climate, but they have not given up on their goals. I am reminded as I ride through the country out here how that attitude has always been part of the DNA of survival in America. Whether settlers traveling West, or farmers battling the elements, or small business owners trying to make the payroll, the people who make it seem to be those who are not easily daunted.

I think we are about to stop for some lunch, which would be good because I am folded up like a lawn chair in the back next to some equipment. I know, you've got your fancy car; the rest of us a still working for a living! Ha!

Call if you get a moment.

With a heavy heart I'm watching the weathering of the Libyan uprising. I believe most of the libyan people are disappointed in Obama's lack of action & we all say "we wish it was George W. Bush"

If US will not force a no-fly zone, then maybe they should use Electronic Warfare against the jet fighters of Gathafi. US forces used this technology in Iraq invasion and the Iraqi Russian made fighters were paralyzed.

I wonder when US will make a move?
