Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi faced reporters today and spun a story of what he says is happening in Libya. It's the same story his son, Saif, has been trying to sell the world for days now. Thank you Janis and Steve. There is no evidence that "thousands" are being killed.
The Libyans seem to want to deal with this, and be proud to reap the rewards of their efforts without the interference of the United States.
All I have heard them ask for is media coverage to show the world their truth, and a no fly zone – which is NOT the jurisdiction of the U.S. to ensure.
Hopefully with a better UN, these atrocities will be a thing of the past in the Ivory Coast.
I hope the UN works quickly to give themselves the 'teeth' they need. There is so much need in the world. Human dignity first!

@Emily re: obama & "legal" backing.
He is trying to get it through NATO, the UN & our European allies.
The US cannot take unilateral action, as has been stated by any number of people who specialize in Lybian history and present situation.
@Mike, freezing $30 billion is nothing. CNN has reported that Gadhafi has as much as $150 Billion at his disposal. I hope the National Community can get it all.

I'm a little late in submitting my question or commentary. My concern with Libya, is if the United States and it's Allies sit on the sidelines during this time when crimes against humanity are at an all time high, how will we as a country or ally of Libya be perceived in the futre, if we don't take any action? I previously stated that we can't place boots on the ground, as the general population of Libya doesn't want an occupation, however, I believe that we aren't acting quickly enough with viable options.

Just a side comment on the coverage. I can't believe Paul Wolfowitz is put on the air and asked his opinion. This man was one of the major architects of the Iraq war (pre-9/11) and the "new American century" which stated democratization of the middle east (i.e. another word for overthrowing certain governments) as a prime objective of the United States. His opinion simply can't be trusted, especially in regards to a highly volatile, complicated situation like Libya.

I watched Piers Morgan interview with Charlie Sheen. Wow, that was interesting. I guess this is Charlie's world and the rest of us are just in it. Actually, I hope he gets the help he so desperately needs.
I'm waiting for ajami to be this excited when the freedom demonstrators express their love for freedom from the mulla rule next time they demonstrate.
he always gets sooooooo excited about the arab corrupt leaders and forget to show the same of the empathy towards the iranian people.
the inner circle around Gadhafi is very small, so if people around him tell him things are calm in Lybia he does believe them. He is not aware of what is going on.

A million thanks Janis for a message well said. Libyans and other Arab nations can certainly take care of themselves and your voice should be heard loud and clear. Arabs need to hear this kind of message over and over again. Please forget about who will replace Bin Ali, Mubarrak and Gadhafi and think about what these Arab people will get in return. They will get their sense of pride and sense of accomplishment. Isn't that a big prize already?

I didn't think Charlie did bad on the P Morgan show. I thought he held it together more than expected.
Whoa, Anderson – CIA – you know Gadhafi is going to jump on that piece of info and twist it into something conspiritorial – if he's still able to think straight, that is. LOL
I like the thought that Egypt and Tunisia people help their fellows in Libya. I dont know if this is geographically possible and the extent of border crossing constraints involved in this are unclear. In any case, they can help Libya rebuild. The nation is going to go through horrific mourning in the heels of the bloodshed and will need neighbors' support.

Wow! What coverage!! I have so far disliked Wolfowitz for his neo-conservatism and his advocacy of Iraq invasion. But today, I could not agree with him more. We need to identify a Provisional Government in Libya and give them help – medicine, food, training to organize and weapons. If this uprising fails, then it will be much more difficult and expensive to replace Qadhafi. In that case, we may have another Saddam for us to replace in the future. Think about it!
Am I the only one that is surprised that Gadhafi is blaming Al Qaeda instead of joining forces with them?
Is it because Gadhafi doesn't want to lose control?

I don't think we should just give away weapons, but we definitely need to help them with supplies, including food and other medical supplies.
@Emily – I don't know if a no fly zone has been established yet. Heard a lot of talk about it.
Aside from other countries, including the US, the Lybian people have consistently requested a no fly zone.
Look what happened today. The bombings of an Army base in revolutionary hands & helicopter attacks on civilians.
