We hope that Anderson understands that although there are plenty of wingnuts in Montana and we have more than our share in the state legislature, there are plenty of articulate thinkers here too. From us, we are sorry you had to endure that interview.
I live in Mr. Wagner's district and most of us here and I think in Montana in general do NOT agree with Mr. Wagner. A lot of us are wondering how he managed to get elected. And I'm fairly certain that the nation's first president did not have parents born in the United States.
Okay. I just listened to the entire interview with Rep. Bob Wagner and Anderson Cooper. I am embarrassed to call myself a Montanan. Our State legislature wastes our tax dollars on stupid non-issues like this, all the while important issues like education and the State budget get put on the back burner until the eleventh hour. Unbelievable.
I am from Montana and I am here to say that most Montanans believe that President Obama IS an American citizen. End of story. Anything to the contrary is ridiculous.
I am a good Republican and I have to say this gentleman is clearly ill-informed and, in plain terms, an idiot. This entire debate is ridiculous – Barack Obama is an American citizen, period. I may not care for his politics, but that does not invalidate his right, given by the U.S. Consitution, to be our president. Bob Wagner and his ilk need to be voted out of office. Are there not intelligent Republicans willing to hold office in Montana and elsewhere???
Bob Wagner is a boob. He does not represent this Montanan and most likely never will. He is just one of the many kooks we seem to have assembled for this legislative session. I am not party affiliated, but I thought I would say that the Republicans are attempting to repeal a voter approved initiative that passed at 62%. It's success would be a first for the State of Montana. Bob is for repeal. So many polarizing issues, it is a mad mad world. Insecurity is a rampant trait for today's politicians, or is it that insecurity is the driving force of today's politics. I'm not an Historian either.
I am SO embarrassed that this man is a representative of my state! Certainly we have bigger issues in our state to worry about than this!
Montana has reasonable people! We have temporarily been overcome by the Tea Party wave. Mr. Wagner is a result of that wave! He spoke as if he had some kind of endorsement or knowledge to speak for the people of the state; he has neither.
This legislature is determined to undermine positive legislation which doesn't coincide with the maleagarchy ethic. Nullify,
rescind and generally disallow any Federal government role in our lives apparently is seen as their legislative duty.
Please know that Mr. Wagner does NOT represent Montana–unless it's the fringe element recently annointed by the Tea Party. They want the Federal government out of lives while inflicting state government into the most personal, private areas of our lives.
Have you noted the recent rantings of MT.Representative Dennis Rehberg, a 28-year politician with a previously unremarkable record/history? He is, himself, a suddenly-fervent Tea Party shouter. HELP!!! Send troops!
The idiotic "Birther" rants by state representitive Bob Wagner were as ignorant as I have ever seen and as a proud Montanan I am embarrassed that soneone that stupid could be elected to state office.
Anderson, I am shocked that you did not ask the most obvious question....What does his birth certificate look like. I was born in Montana and can tell you that the only birth certificate I have says "Certificate of Live Birth". My son who was born in Colorado, his says the same thing. My Youngest and my Husband who were both born in California, also states "Certificate of Live Birth". I'm sure that is what everyone's birth certificate says. What the heck is a long form? No one I have spoken to has any idea where that came from and I suspect that no one else can produce it either.
I cringed every time he said "Montanan's want", etc. I am from Montana and he does not represent the good intelligent people of this state!
i hope they email this to bob. "uh i'm just going to sit here and say uh alot and not really answer any question that was preposed to me in other words i'm just racist and i felt like doing something annoying" why do we allow idiots to be a representatives to our country.
This is NOT the view of most Montanans. This representative was hand-picked by Anderson Cooper to make us all look like idiots. This is not a "hot topic" in the state and has pretty much no chance of passing. Why did you give this idiot national attention? He was elected in an excessively rural area and doesn't represent any significant group from Montana.
I am a 3rd generation Montanan, and I have to say Bob Wagner is an idiot and does not represent me. I did not vote for this man. He is an embarrassment.
The Republicans in this state are ridiculous!
This legislator is not indicative of normal Montana folk. The sky (The Big Sky) is not falling contrary to this man. How do you qualify to have a belief?
I just want to be sure that AC 360 viewers and the country in general are aware that Rep. Wagner does NOT speak for the majority of Montanians. It really is embarrassing to our state and to me personally to have him implying otherwise. For the most part, we are better than the example he set.
How embarrassing for Montana, & for Rep. Wagner. And what a waste of the State Legislature's limited resources (they only meet every two years) when there are so many other important issues to be addressed.
I have been a Montana resident for a mere 56 years and I am embarassed and appalled that a senator from my state is trying to pass this ridiculous bill. The people of Montana are not stupid and I believe that the majority do believe in the Constitution and the 14 Amendment. Please don't judge our state by one fanatic, off-the-wall senator. Until yesterday most of us have never heard of this guy. I guess he's looking for his 15 minutes of fame. Senator Wagner is an embarassment to our state!
As a Montana citizen State Representative Bob Wagner is an embarrassment and needs to focus on jobs or be sent home.
This man is an idiot and doesn't represent the majority of Montanans.
Who elects these people? Watching this makes me embarrassed to be a Montanan. Can we please focus on electing some intelligence in this state.
Please, please do not think that this is the view of all the people of Montana. I am proud to say I was born and raised in this beautiful state but am humiliated when someone like Bob Wagner disgraces us with his plain stupid and narrow minded thinking and then speaks out on it for all the world to see.... We must all keep him in our prayers though. For he is a Republican and he knows not what he does!
Oh My Gosh, Please know that I for one do NOT agree with this man. I live in Montana and am horrified by his embarrassing interview and views. It has gotten many Montanans talking.
As a native Montanan, I would like to clarify that NOT ALL Montanan's think this way. This is embarassing for our great state.
As a native of Montana I could hardly sit through this interview without dyeing of shame! It is often frustrating in Montana how easy it is for minority voices with insane political views to wield enormous power in our state. The citizens in our state are currently at odds with our own representatives proposing laws that not only go against the standing tenants of the United States constitution, but also our own rather elegant state constitution. In addition to this inane bill from the birthers is an even more disturbing attempt to over turn several voter based initiatives, including the overwhelmingly popular medical marijuana, and anti-discrimination laws. How can the republican party claim that they are against "big government" When they are strategically attempting to limit our ability to exercise our rights as voters. There is a lot of bad politics going on in Montana right now and I believe it needs to be a matter of national debate. Thank you for at least shining a small light on the travesty of public policy that is now afflicting Montana.
I felt awkward for Wagner. That man is clearly not following the same set of rules as the rest of us. Also, Coopers head gestures speak volumes. This was classic!!
State of Hawaii REFUSES to confirm that copy of birth certificate was issued to Obama campaign on June 6, 2007. Have you ever called the Hawaii DoH and tried to obtain this information?
If what you believe about Obama's birthplace is true – why are you against "birther bills"? It must be obvious to you that Obama will send a copy of official birth certificate (the long form version from Kapiolani hospital).
All presidential candidates will have to fulfill the same eligibility requirement.
Your analyst quoted Vattel incorrectly – the definition of natural born citizen according to Vattel does not require parents to be born in the USA.
A child born in the USA whose parents are US citizens at the time of child's birth is a natural born citizen regardless of parents' birthplace.
What is hard to understand for a person of his stature, a State Representative? Rep Bob Wagner? I'm originally from the philippines and a Canadian citizen.. I was educated in the Phil and when I was in grade 6, i learned that the United States follows the "Jus Solis" system. i.e. as long as a child is born in the U.S. soil (solis) that child is said to be a natural born citizen regardless of the one parent's citizenship at the time when the child is born. So what's hard to understand about that. Rep Bob Wagner of Montana is giving me mixed messages of what he really was trying to convey.
Way to got Montana!!! Anderson cooper is wrong.. there is nothing wrong with making sure the presidents is a US citizen!!!
Bill Wagner is far from a representation of Montana as a whole. The interview with Wagner was slightly embarrassing due the fact that the majority Montana residents are rational, and accept Obama as a natural born citizen. I am a proud resident of Montana, and I believe the interview portrayed Montana in a way that does not give our state the image it deserves.
Wow, that was embarassing...thanks Rep. Wagner for representing our great state in such an articulate manner. (FACEPALM)
The Certification of Live Birth that Obama posted on his website is NOT a Long Form Birth Certificate. It does not have a Doctor or Witness Signature and no Birth Hospital is listed. Please realize that this same form can be obtained by persons NOT born in Hawaii and could be given to someone born out of the country. Obama's sister Maya has this same form and she was born in Indonesia. Please get your facts straight because this form is NOT proof that Obama was born in the U.S. and definitely does not prove that he is a Natural Born Citizen as requried by the Constitution. Obama needs to show his long form Birth Certificate.

I just watched your exchange with a Montana official who is apparently a birther. I would like to add only one thing: If you push it back far enough in time, anyone other than an aborigine Indian is not a "Natural Born Citizen of the United States". If both parents have to be natural born citizen, you will run in the past immigration where , obviously, the ancestors were not born in the United States. That man, whoever he is, is an idiot like all the other who believe Mr. Obama to not be an American Citizen. They could apply the same formula to Mr. McCain, who was born in Panama, and refuse him the citizenship he deserves even less according to their beliefs, and therefore would have made him ineligible to run for office of President. It is sad to see that those people are ready to abolish the 14th Amendment to the Constitution just to satisfy their bigotry and still refuse a (partially) Black man (or a person of any other race) the same rights they enjoy.
I am so embarrassed. We deserve better reps. in montana. The Obama issue is so lame. There are bigger issues to deal with. Sorry from montana.
I can do nothing but shake my head in disbelief. Mr Wagnor is a Representative of about 1 million US citizens and he doesn't seem in touch with reality.
Anderson Cooper –
If President Obama is a US Citizen, how is it that he obtained a scholarship or fellowship to law school with the requirement as a foreign student in order to qualify?
So, according to the Birthers all children born to military personnel, while stationed overseas serving this country, are not considered citizens and are not eligible to run for president?
One question I wish Anderson Cooper had posed to the gentleman supporting the Montana "Birther Bill". Does he realize that John McCain was NOT BORN in the United States? He was born on August 29, 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone. The Panama Canal, at that time, was under US control, but was not then (and is still not) part of the United States.
oops Mr. Wagner instead of Mr. Parker. His ignorance is appauling...ugh
I am embarassed to live in Montana with Mr. Parker representing a fraction of the individuals in this state. So when he stated "we Montanan's" – I'd like to know how many people in this beautiful state would agree to be part of his "we". The thought that tax money is being spent on something so trivial is ludicrous...need I say more!!!
Throughout this interview with Mr Wagner he kept referring to Montana as if everyone in Montana feels the way he does about this bill. He couldn't be further from the truth. Most of Montanan's are very reasonable and intelligent people and not crazy.
Anderson Cooper goes beyond the headlines to tell stories from many points of view, so you can make up your own mind about the news. Tune in weeknights at 8 and 10 ET on CNN.
