[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Sarah Palin takes aim at President Obama's State of the Union address and hits the old Soviet Union instead.
Pres. Obama called this our "Sputnik moment." She says launching sputnik ended up bankrupting the USSR.
Does she have her facts straight? We're keeping her honest. Plus, the congressman who's causing an uproar over his feedback on the State of the Union address and more.

Sarah Palin is, as usual, missing the point. Obama was talking about the US having a Sputnik moment, where, similar to when the Soviets launched Sputnik, we realize we're behind and we need to step up and improve our math and science education. Is that so difficult to understand?

More Palin and Bachmann in public view and Obama reelection is guaranteed. Good job Tea Party. Stay the course.

In my view Palin don't have any idea. I think she should stay away from politics and especially away from Democrats. She has nothing positive to talk about Democrates no matter what President Obama does.

"Writing the future" in the President's speech and Sarah Palin's use of WTF emphasizes the difference between the words of a President and the words of someone who has no business in forming the future of our country. How does a parent explain what WTF means to their grade school children? This from someone who thinks she can be President - really?

Socialism is just a code word for the right-wingers because they don't have the guts to use the word they're really thinking.

The most ignorant of them don't know what socialism really is and most couldn't spell it if you spotted them the "social" and the "ism."

I'm embarrassed to be from Georgia after hearing what Rep. Broun had to say. Only in the south would they keep electing people like him.

I think what is lost in this discussion is that Sarah Palin didn't grasp the intent of the Presidents use of the "Sputnik Moment". She appears to have thought he meant for us to aspire to what the USSR achieved with Sputnik, but rather he means for us to aspire to our own reaction to Sputnik. It inspired us to push ourselves, as a nation, to excel and surpass our adversaries. That is relevant today because we need to excel and lead the way once more if we hope to remain the nation we think we are.

Please ask Dr. Cohen what caused the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thanks.

The Founding Fathers would be appalled at how large and powerful the federal government has grown. They were suspicious of government, hence specifically listed the powers the federal government had, leaving all others to the state.

    @Mike, formerly from Syracuse,

"Economic statism" doesn't sound as scary as
"Socialism" does to the general public. (Most) Politicians don't want to let facts get in their way.

I think that Sarah Palin, a person who in my opinion is not ready for prime time, says so many stupid things because it gets her media coverage, more money for her books and events, and it motivates her devoted followers who think that she can do nothing wrong.

  16. Kaytee

What is sad about Palin is she does not surround herself with smart people. You don't really have to know everything about everything, but you do need people around you who can help you. She has a reputation of not listening to anyone and its sooo obvious.

Sarah Palin is usually referred to as a celebrity I think and she has power to a certain extent.

Nope, Rep. Broun!!!!! President Obama is not social, I strong disagree with you, oh come on!!!!!

FYI-Sarah Palin was not referring literally to the cost of sputnik, she was laughing at the President using a USSR example to make the assertion that america was now at a moment in history where it could choose to achieve greatness. She brilliantly linked the humour to the fact that the USSR was a socialist state which ultimately could not take economic advantage of their space achievements because they lacked the individual freedom to innovate and develop the applied engineering that distributed the benefits of the space race to competitive industry in the US and made America the world leader in technology.

If you know your history the space race also included "Star Wars" Reagans Idea, not the movie. That is what helped bring down the USSR. Also Didn't Cohen say something about celebrity doesn't mean leadership? He sure has Obama pegged.

I imagine some of these tweeters wish later that they had kept their beaks shut. If they don't, they should. At least Rep. Broun will come on the show. Now he is quoting the Bible. To say that our President doesn't "believe in" the Constitution is ridiculous.

It is really interesting that Palin was the lead this evening... I didn't hear when Obama said, yet it sounds like Obama he was attempting to make another point with his remark. Would have been interesting to focus on that instead of what Palin said.

Socialism is the wrong word. Economic statism is what Obama practices.

What do you expect from Sarah Palin; she see's Russia out of her back door and made Joe the Plummer famous.

    Ah yes,

Sarah Palin is the gift that keeps giving, just when you think it can't get any better she tops herself. I look forward to each and every nugget she delivers for public consumption. It is by far better than the funny papers could ever aspire to be.

This so called politician embarasses me as a woman. But I have to thank her. I called my son who is a history teacher and told him what Ms. Palin had to say about the Soviet Union and Sputnik , He and I had a 5 minute laugh. Between Palin and Bachmanns IWO JAMMA comment I feel that they really should be on Saturday NIght Live, not pretending that they have any chance of being president

    January 27, 2011 at 10:17 pm |
  27. Stacy

I honestly don't think Palin has the smarts to be strategic in the things she says. She has a history of simply spouting off at the mouth. I think the biggest reason she is talked about so much is because she says such ridiculous things everyone has to counter her craziness with reason.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:17 pm |
  28. Lee

I can't understand Palin's popularity, except perhaps a certain segment of our population likes to believe they're smart & she makes them feel that way. She's ignorant of SO much, but she fits right in with a lot of other Americans who think they know way more than they actually do. She's such an airhead, I find it hard to take her seriously.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:16 pm |
  29. Paige

She is turning something really serious into a circus and I wish the media would just ignore her. Our country is so great to let someone like her on TV but she should stick to "reality" tv and not politics.

  30. Paul

I agree that gaffes of this kind probably don't mean much to Palin's supporters (and probably make her even more lovable to them) but they also turn off everyone else. And if she's really serious about running for president (instead of just making a lot of money pretending to run) she has to worry about that because her supporters are in the minority in a general election.

Jim, Obama's point was probably what you say. But he flubbed the analogy. If it has to be explained, it was to above the audience.

Thank you!!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed the segement, and had to stop working on my history lesson for tomorrow (I teach US history to 11th graders). I was laughing out loud at what Palin did! You have a great sense of humor while bringing us the FACTS, too bad Palin can't. Keep up the great work!

"we are here, again, talking about something stupid S. Palin said". Spot on!
I believe that she and Bachman are sideshow plants by the RNP to district us. They have to be, right??

    January 27, 2011 at 10:14 pm |
  36. Kaytee

That guy just said a mouthful, we confuse celebrity with political leaders. Palin is just a celebrity, and I don't know why we waste time on her. She obviously knows nothing.

Please make sure the media is aware of the events in Egypt. Large rallies are scheduled to continue tomorrow and the government is mobilizing forces. Please make it known that they do not stand alone and we will not allow more people to be killed in there attempt to call for there basic civil liberties that have been denied for so long under this oppressive regime.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:12 pm |
  39. Jim

I could be wrong but wasn't Obama referring to the fact that we need to respond like America did when Sputnik was in the mix. We saw that the Soviets were far ahead and America answered with innovation, hard work, and determination to surpass them in the long run. SImilar to what we need to do with China.

Wish we could talk about someone else who isnt known for saying stupid things....consistently. I hope Palin sticks with reality TV and not politics.

Why would someone want to see a Palin/Bachmann ticket? I'd be embarrassed by that, as I expect more from those running for the Presidency. (perhaps that's just me)

    January 27, 2011 at 10:11 pm |
  43. Arno

But... aren't you missing the point? Obama didn't mention the "Sputnik moment" as the "ussr sputnik moment", but more in the idea that it was an "american sputnik moment", the allergic reaction the us had against the soviet and that lead to so much economic growth.. in the US!
    Am I wrong?

    January 27, 2011 at 10:10 pm |
  44. Mike, formerly from Syracuse

Palin isn't stupid. She knows she won't be President or even the Rep. nominee. She's maximizing her exposure, which maximizes her income and influence.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:10 pm |
  45. Andrew P.

Why, oh why is everyone still talking about Sarah Palin. She is not a Governor, obviously not even well educated, does not recall any history, and is not even up-to-date with her current world events.
It's not that "she's crazy", unfortunately it's all of the 'media' that keep putting her on TV.
Is it that we are all interested in watching someone acting so stupidly, that it's entertaining? I'm sorry, but I guess that's just a sad commentary on the state of affairs that we are coming to in this country.

Good evening Soledad and everyone. It's NEVER exactly clear what Sarah Palin means. She stammers and does something with her speech which I can't find a name for. The jumping around with topics that are only loosely connected drives me crazy.
