Kids, Guns & Politics: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Child safety experts say doctors should ask kids and their parents about whether they have a gun in the house. So why do some Florida state lawmakers want to throw doctors in jail for doing just that? We're Keeping Them Honest. Plus, tonight's other headlines.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

Dr. Laura and Sarah Palin have something in common, huh? Both helpless victims of life. Ridiculous for sure!

Good night everyone. Sleep well and stay safe. Great show tonight.

Its funny how people like Palin and Dr. Laura want to use their 1st amendment right, but don't want anyone else to use theirs to speak out against them. That right goes both ways!

The Ridiculist, my Favorite! Not to mention Dr. Laura.

CNN's fault??! Dr. Laura joins hundreds of public figures who seem to be unable to take responsibility for their own statements!
Assinatated?! She's apparently very, very important too.
Thanks for keeping such great records Anderson!
    Truly belongs on the Ridiculist!

    @Samantha,
It's tragic that such a system was not around to save Amber Hagerman. I hope that this case is solved! Seeing Ricky there in the playground was very touching. It's great to see that people have not forgotten.

Amber alerts are a great system for sharing information on missing children.

    January 18, 2011 at 10:49 pm |

The Amber alert system is one of the best thing that has happened to the law! let's keep it going!

I love the passion that John Walsh has. He never give's up on cold cases and missing kid's.

    Greetings all!

I am ever so curious to know what prompted "baby doc" to travel to Haiti...did he think perhaps by now everyone would have erased his part of the country's history from their minds?

  37. Starr, formerly known as vincent

I remember this tragic case and how hard the family worked (with others) to create Amber's LaW.
To date, Amber Alerts have helped save any number of children. I can't think of a world without it now.
@Anderson- this is a great topic to educate all of us.

    January 18, 2011 at 10:47 pm |
  38. Gloria, Brooklyn, NY

All department stores recognize the 'Amber's Alert'.

Great report by Gary. I really hope that this case will be solved, and Ms. Norris & Ricky will find peace & Amber's killer brought to justice.

    January 18, 2011 at 10:45 pm |
  41. Samantha

Fully agree with you Emily, the AMBER alert system is fantastic in the annoucement of missing children that have been found! The pain the family still experiences will never diminish but they got to know their experience gives hope to the other families of missing children.

As a clinical psychologist I cannot get my mind around what these Fla lawmakers want to do re: guns! Any "doctor" who is a mental health professional (i.e. psychiatrist, psychologist)needs to ask an individual of any age suspected of being SUICIDAL or DANGEROUS TO OTHERS about their accessibility to guns & intent to use them. If NOT allowed to ask about guns, but also NOT allowed to deny treatment to someone who refuses to discuss guns–what in the world kind of position would that put the doctor in?! If a clinician cannot assess potential risk/dangerousness or take steps to prevent a death–what do you politicians suggest we do? Would you really put us in jail or fine us for doing our job?

    January 18, 2011 at 10:45 pm |

They took their tragedy and turned it into a legacy.

I am really surprised the person who saw Amber taken did not get any identification of the car or possibly the person who took her

This is so sad. All of the "milk carton" kids just break my heart. Let's look at the larger picture too. Who is taking these kids? Pedophiles. Another tough topic for our country to deal with.

someone told me once that they believe that the children we lose are the ones who make the strongest angels – it is a bittersweet thought

Yes, I am for the death penalty – can't imagine a child being killed.

I feel fortunate I don't live in Florida. The bill proposed is absurd. We should be proposing laws to account for our politicians...instead of politicians waisting tax payer money trying to limit the reach of highly educated doctors. SHAMEFUL!

A Ped's job is to treat the kid, not question the parents about firearms. That is none of their business. Sounds like they are working for law enforcement building up a database of firearm ownership. Why would they do that when one doesn't have to register a firearm? And why would the government want to know who owns firearms?

"The AMBER Alert" is a wonderful system. It's a great way for Amber Hagerman's name to live on. It's found & saved countless children already. She & her family should be very proud.
