CNN Poll: No change on gun law opinions after Arizona shootings

CNN Political Unit

Washington (CNN) – Americans' overall attitudes toward gun laws have not budged an inch in the wake of the shootings in Arizona, according to a new national poll.

But a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday also indicates that majority of the public favors restrictions on semi-automatic guns and high-capacity ammunition clips, as well as background checks and limits on the number of guns that can be purchased.

The poll indicates that the two sides of the gun debate are evenly balanced, with one in seven Americans opposing any restrictions on guns at all and one in seven saying that all guns should be illegal except for police and other authorized personnel. Roughly a third support minor restrictions and roughly a third support major restrictions.

The arguement for gun control mirrors the debate over abortion – it never ends and seemingly prohibits compromise. The pro-gun lobby is extreme. I've recently been phoned by an organization convinced that the United Nations now plans to coerce the federal government to restrict gun use by Americans. C'mon – seriously. I can just hear the give and take over ordinance – " Hey, if we don't have a 101 shot clip, the criminals will"!

This poll is inaccurate because of the question. It asked: did the shooting make you change your mind about gun control. Anyone for gun control before is lumped into the same group as people against control...because they hadn't changed their view.

You can only check people out so far. You could sell a gun to someone with a spotless record but that doesnt mean that something in his life has happened to make him reach his breaking point. And in the times we live in im suprised that it doesnt happen more. New gun laws arent going to keep people from reaching thier breaking point whatever that may be for them.
