NYC welcomes 2011 with traditional ball-drop, revelers

Jordana Ossad

New York (CNN) - An estimated 1 million people marked the passing of one year and the beginning of another in New York's Times Square with the descent of an iconic ball.

With the help of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta, the dazzling crystal ball began its 70-foot drop at 11:59 p.m. Friday to the harmonious chants of New Year's Eve revelers counting down the final seconds of 2010.

More than one ton of confetti was released at midnight, with personal individual wishes written in more than 25 languages, a tradition from the past three years.

After watching Anderson and Kathy on New Year's Eve for the 4th year, I keep asking myself, "Why her?" Maybe I'm too timid, but Kathy is a little too much for me. Anderson did a great job of watching her every move (of what we saw on TV). Ratings obviously are high and many viewers tune in to watch. Anyway, thanks for a great show. Happy 2011!!

I hope Kathy Griffin will not appear next year for the New Year ball drop and that someone with more class will join Anderson Cooper. If she is featured again, I will not watch CNN. Anderson is such a gentleman; Kathy is crude and offensive and lacks class.

Please do all a favor and retire Kathy from New Year's Eve coverage. Anderson Cooper does not need her.

I love spending new years's eve with Kathy and Anderson. My only regret is that it only comes once a year, the best new year's coverage on the planet.

Next year, why not give Kathy Griffin her own show in which she can talk about herself and make jokes without the necessity of bothering her about that New Years Eve thing? Those of us who want to see what's going on in Times Square might be able to do so instead of tuning into the Kathy Griffin Show.

    Please. Isn't enough enough?

Happy New Year to the crew of AC360. I hope your back is better Mr. Cooper. And I hope your mom's cold is better, too.

I tried watching Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffen last night for a while, but every comment that came out of Griffen's mouth was either a sexual innuendo, a double entendre, or just some overt sexual reference, and none of it was funny and all of it was embarrassing and out of place. I was embarrassed for Anderson Cooper, who is a classy, intelligent guy and a superb journalist, having to share the stage and the evening with that. He looked uncomfortable and tried to laugh off all of Griffen's comments, but all it did was make me feel uneasy, and I finally had to switch channels. I hope that next year and in future years, someone else who is of the same stature as Anderson Cooper will be chosen to co-host the New Year's Eve festivities in Times Square. Kathy Griffen is better left to the "D List" venues she normally appears in, much better suited to her tasteless form of "comedy."

Anderson, loved seeing you last night. Youe side kick was so offensive and I hope you get you get many more complaints about her. I will change channels next your if she is still a part of the show. Her insulting remarks about were more than I could take. You are so classy and professional and she is brash and not funny. You two are not a match. Please dump the want to be and don't stoop to her level.
    A big fan,
