9/11 first responders left waiting: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Tonight, the lawmaker known as Doctor No, Senator Tom Coburn may end up single-handedly saying no to thousands of 9/11 first responders. We're Keeping him Honest. The author of a how-to guide for pedophiles, previously sold on Amazon, is in jail tonight and he's speaking out. And, in Crime and Punishment, the mysterious and tragic death of a toddler, a cold case solved.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

    Nina,
I agree with you, He should have removed soon or anytime.

Did Dana Loesch do any research, or did she just call Sen. Coburn's office for talking points? The bill IS PAID FOR by removing a tax loophole that pays multinational companies for sending jobs overseas.

I do not understand why he would write a book like that.

@Nina, you ask an important question...how can an MD be so heartless.

I don't know. I don't know HOw One Man can be allowed to stand in the way of a bill that is supported by the majority of the Senate, House and the American people.

Maybe Congress should have cut $6 billion out of the renewed Bush tax cuts to fund this bill.

It's a disgrace that these men and women put their lives on the line while being given false assurance that they were safe. Where were the respirators that would have saved their lives?

We owe them whatever is needed to compensate them for what they have endured.

I am delighted to see him in jail. I also feel Amazon should take some "heat" for selling this book. What about their responsibility?

I hope and pray that there is never a catastrophic event like 9/11 again in our country. But if their was, I bet that the 1rst responder's would still put their life on the line to protect and save the citizens of our country without thinking is this the politically correct thing to do. Shame on Congress. Take care of those who fell sick.

"I think if was NY Rep. Mr. King. in the House of Rep.'s" Thanks! I forget who that 'Gentleman' was, yet it really is a great piece of footage.

The terrorists (Bin Laden) murdered all those people on 911.

The Terrorists (Republican Party) kill all the first responders 9 years later.

There is something fundamentaly wrong with anyone who leaves there sick and poor behind so that the rich can get richer.

26 billion to the dead people estate tax and people are dying over 6.2 billion.

And the USA proports to dictate to the rest of the world on what HUMAN RIGHTS ARE????

What'swrong here? They had no problem extending the Bush tax cut even though it,s not paid for and adds to the deficit but when it comes to this health bill, they ask that the cost be paid for before passing the bill.

I hope the voters of Oklahoma remember the shameful conduct of their Senator. I'm sure that by the time re-election comes around he will have spun his reprehensible behavior into some sort of distorted patriotic act though. Shame on him and the voters who support him.

Can;t believe Sen. Colbern thinks they are "rushing" this bill.. How many years behind are they in doing something for these heros?

are you kidding me? congress just collectively agreed to absorb a continuation of the bush tax cuts, ethanol subsidies, etc. and now they are getting their back up about $6B? i don't know if this is a well written bill or not, but it is highly hypocritical to say it is not being passed for financial reasons. where is a 3rd political party when you need it?

    @Mike
The fact is, it should not have taken this long to get around to helping the 9/11 first responders. Why wasn't this taken care of during Bush's inept administration?

    Agreed Mike, good question.

If ALL the Senators were actually working on this 9/11 bill, I don't think it would matter if it was passed at the "11th hour". (If everyone or the majority were showing up & participating – doing their jobs!)

So, tell me how are the Congress going to pay for this very important bill?

Just because Dana Loesch says the bill is slipshod doesn't make it a fact. She probably wouldn't recognize a fact if it hit her in the face.

And how is Dana Loesch going to fund the tax cuts for the wealthy? They don't seem to be too concerned about that.

I find it really disturbing thet people we elected to represent us are not. When it comes to things that affect us like unemployment benefits or a bill that will help the health of hundreds of people that were in a place to help millions of people in a terrible disaster they say no to it because it will take money, but they have no problem throwing hissy fits when it comes to paying more taxes especially when they can afford to and the people who elected them cannot afford even health insurance

    December 21, 2010 at 10:09 pm |
  31. Nina

There seems to be a hold on the 9/11 first responders bill because the Republicans fear it will succeed the Bush Tax cuts. Well I say shame on those who are more concerned about tax cuts than bring help to the first responders of 9/11

It is UNprinciple to stand in the Way of this bill!
How can he do this? Is there no way to Stop him?
God Bless Rep. Weiner for speaking his truth!

If Sen. Coburn gets away with this stunt, my disgust with Congress will hit a new low.

Coburn and Rushpublicans are more concerned with their wealthy supporters than with the heroes that rushed in to try to help and find survivors while the congress critters were cowering in their private bunkers.

It's hard to understand how and why one Senator can hold up such an important Bill. How can this be called a rush job by Sen.Coburn while so many 1rst responders are sick and dying?

Good evening Sanjay, 360 bloggers, and Anderson wherever you are. I just finished decorating 12 dozen Christmas cookies with my 2 year old granddaughter (and survived).

I hope Congress moves ahead with the bill compensating the first responders. This can't be a very popular bill to oppose for Mr. Coburn who missed the previous hearings or he would be up to date.

Senator Coburn just baffles the mind. Of all people, he would know exactly the devastation these first responders are experiencing. And he continues to be Dr. "NO" I say Dr. "No sense"!

I think the 'MD' part of Coburn's name was dropped after he became a politician because no doctor would say no to medical treatment of sick people
