Washington (CNN) - Senate Democrats failed Thursday to win a procedural vote to open debate on a bill that would provide medical benefits and compensation for emergency workers who were first on the scene of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The motion for cloture, or to begin debate, needed 60 votes to pass due to a Republican filibuster, but fell short at 57-42 in favor.
While supporters said they would try to bring the bill up again, either on its own or as part of other legislation to be considered, the vote Thursday jeopardized the measure's chances for approval in the final weeks of the current congressional session.
The House previously passed the bill on a mostly partisan 268-160 vote.

There may be a new lesson from this Republican filibuster in the delay of a meritorious thought and honorable well-doing to those that most deserve it in this moment of time.
I can only cringe at the thought that they may define this new decade of 11-20 as, "I choose to ignore." The "self entitlement" definition of 00-10 deems to be a more benevolent description compared to what this Senate gives.
Politicians depend on American lust for instant gratification to receive their vote.
They will tell you any-thing you want to hear and once in office do what they want, not what the voters need. They feel and are usually correct, when their term begins do their dirt because most voters seem to forget the particular politician did not do what he or she she promised during the first 3/4 of their term, then throw a few crumbs to the voters during the 4th qt., because you did not hold them accountable or forgot the other 3/4. If politicians did not do as promise or not support the needs of the majority of their constituents, they should be barred from office for life. Politicians consume 99.999999% at voters expense and produce .000001%.
How dare they use the excuse not to pass it for the reason of fraud when there was so fraud going on that caused some of the economy situation that were in . And then the fraud that proceded with bail out money that was received by the same companies that were involved in some of the reason that put us in the state of economy were in
as a NY'er that witnessed the events of 9-11 i am disgusted by the recent events of congress. i know spending is out of control. I m sure there are many ways of cutting spending on $1,000 hammers and $300 toilet seats. but to cut out the benefits of families of those who were involved with 9 -11 for fear of fraud........take a look at yourselves and your ir-responsible spending before you cut out care of our bravest people.
Let's train congress to be 1st responders. Let them actually take care of their country for once!
I am deeply saddened and disappointed that the GOP lawmakers are forsaking our US heroes. I have no idea how these people get voted into office when the cares of American heroes get set aside for the tax concerns of millionaires and billionaires.
Our country is truly confused and broken.
