Thomas Black
Nominated Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow | HIS STORY

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow is my uncle and I have always wanted more people to know about the good work he does. When a friend of mine told me about CNN Heroes I thought this could be a good way raise awareness.

Magnus's story is simple but incredible. In 1992, appalled by the scenes on television, Magnus and his brother Fergus took time off from their jobs as fish farmers to drive a container of locally donated aid to Bosnia during the Civil War. When they arrived back they believed there job was done but in their absence aid had continued to be donated and fill their dad's garage. Magnus decided to take a year off work to keep driving out the aid until it stopped being given. It never did.

Eventually he realised that to keep operating he must register as a charity, Scottish International Relief was born and from that numerous projects have grown. Most notable of SIR's many projects is the Mary's Meals campaign that aims to help children escape poverty by giving them a daily meal in school. This helps feed the children but Mary's Meals' strength lies in the fact that a school meal allows children who never could to attend school, giving them a chance for food and an education. Mary's Meals operates out of tin shed in the Scottish Highlands and works in 15 of the world's poorest countries reaching over 400,000 children daily!

When I heard he had been selected for the Top 10 I was delighted. I have always thought that when people hear about Magnus they will be impressed by him and I was very happy that this had happened on such a grand scale.

I want people to know about how great an example Magnus is for all of us; he is a very simple man, with a very simple message. He is humble and caring and it is his compassion that motivates him to do what he does.

Mary's Meals started with a small act of compassion and I hope we all may realise that it is in little acts of compassion that the world can change.

Thank you CNN for featuring Magnus in your program, I hope it does a lot of good. Magnus truly cares about these orphans of the world and it is these children that he wants to help.

I agree with Thomas. Magnus does not work for his own glory ever. He never puts himself in the Center, and says that it is a privilege to participate in this service. He really means it, and it is not a show!

David Gergen and Gloria Berger did a greatjob of challenging Rep Schakowsky for her criticism of deficit reduction ideas before they are even discussed and evaluated. President Obama finally was presidential in telling Congress and others to shut up until we can consider everything and don't make this into politics. Schakowsky, Pelosi and union leaders should be ashamed and taken to the woodshed for their remarks. They still don't get last Tuesday's message – Americans want our leaders to work together for solutions and stop being political on everything.
