Amazon.com book defending pedophilia sparks boycott call

Emanuella Grinberg

(CNN) - An e-book for sale on Amazon.com that appears to defend pedophilia has sparked hundreds of angry user comments and calls for a boycott of the online retailer unless it pulls the title.

The author of "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: A Child-Lover's Code of Conduct" described the self-published title as "my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian [sic] rules for these adults to follow," according to the Amazon.com product description.

"I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter [sic] sentences should they ever be caught," an author named Phillip R. Greaves II wrote in the Amazon.com listing.

As of 6:25 p.m. ET, there were 1,037 comments on the Amazon.com listing, and more were coming in by the minute. The lion's share of the comments deplored the title's publication and vowed to boycott Amazon until it removes the self-published title from the site.

"It is ILLEGAL to molest children, and for Amazon to promote such is insane. I'm an abuse survivor, and am OUTRAGED Amazon would choose to promote this nonsense. I will not be purchasing anything from your website until this is removed," one user wrote in a comment echoed by others.

Others lamented they could not give the book less than "one star" in submitting their reviews, saying they would shop elsewhere during the holiday season.

Amazon has the choice to sell these books, but is greed so important doesn't anyone at Amazon stop and say, we don't need to sell this book and let this author sell it on their own. Amazon does not have to take part but choose to do so. With the Holidays coming up Amazon should be shown by people if they are truly disgusted, just don't use Amazon this holiday and let the message go to them, although we need to be careful as a society as is the next Obama book or Glen Beck book also to receive this treatment by people who are in dissapproval of their positions, that is the problem. I believe a pedophile book is different but we need to be careful as a society otherwise everything will be protested.

I checked this morning and although the title still shows up, it is unavailable.

Amazon does not have a "contact us" to click on for general comments, so I left feedback on packaging for an item that I had recently purchased indicating that I would not purchase anything else from them until this book was removed.

Amazon has withdrawn the book from sale. I received an email from them overnight after I said I would no longer shop on Amazon.

This sounds like "probable cause" to me – for some investigators to check into Phillip R. Greaves' video collection and the content of his personal computer. Someone who promotes and defends this behavior is not doing so out of distant intellectual curiosity.

It looks like they took it off Amazon. Thanks for alerting the public.

I work for the postal service and I see pkgs from amazon everyday. If this book is mailed through the postal service I should think it would be child porn to which the inspectors take very seriously. Have you asked anyone at the postal service about the mailing of this book? I'd be interested in what they would have to say about it. As an employee we are restricted from speaking with the inspectors unless it is of an emergency situation. I love you and your show. John King too. You guys are great. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Anderson, for highlighting the pedophilia book on Amazon. I sent an email in support of dropping the book, and hopefully the company will listen. I don't believe in banning books, but you can choose not to sell some. Amazon has a choice or I think they are going to loose a lot of customers.

    Dear Anderson Cooper,
Thank you for bringing this story to the forefront. I am totally offended that Amazon would even consider publishing this book.

I hope your bringing this up on national TV will either cause people to boycott Amazon or that Amazon removes this highly offensive book from their stores.

Clearly Amazon is more concerned w/ the pedophilia getting away w/ the act ....other than the children who become affected by the action....sad so so so very sad

Is pedophilia okay as long as you do it in a way the children won't feel violated? Is it okay to sell a book that shares that kind of information with others who -at this very moment- are looking to violate a child in such a way? If this isn't inciting others to do bad things-tell me, what is?

If Amazon does not pull this book, I will close my account and encourage others to do the same.

This has nothing to do with censorship. This has to do with doing the right thing.

This is absolutely absurb....truly when anything goes and the priority comes down to greed over morality, we are in the END days. I too agree that my service will go elsewhere until order is established with Amazon.

10 years ago the US Supreme Court decided that the book "Hit Man: A Technical Manual For Independent Contractors" enjoyed no First Amendment protection because, in that court's opinion, a jury could find that the book's content amounted to the aiding and abetting of criminal conduct.

How can this not apply to the "how to" book for pedophilia?

The only person reading that crap is a child preditor so why sell it. pepole get enough bad ideals without someone makeing a book about it.

After watching AC360 I am done with Amazon!
I had reasonable suspicion drug testing training at work today, and Amazon also sells books on how to make meth, and get away with it.
I thought possibly this was a fluke, and they
did not know all of their content, now I know
    better! Thanks AC360

Where do you sign up for the boycott? I shop a lot on Amazon, not now. Makes me wonder who is running the show there, to make a decision like that. Talk about going to the dark side, way over the top on this one Amazon. Most states have laws on their books about this kind of stuff between adults and children and it is illegal. Sounds to me like this author needs to be checked up on and what he has been up to. Jail might be a good place for him.

Just searched the Amazon site from Canada, and while the image and title of the book appear, selecting it takes me nowhere. Message is "We're sorry. The Web address you entered is not a functioning page on our site." The book doesn't even come up in a search of the Canadian site (Amazon.ca). So maybe their better business sense has kicked in, if not their sense of what is right or wrong.

Wow, someone has a different view on life than the average American, decides to write a book about it (which honestly would be a fascinating read in my opinion), and the morality zealots get up in arms with an imaginary conspiracy of Amazon supporting pedophilia.

And this is supposed to be a country that prides itself on freedom of speech?

Once you agree to take it out, where do you stop? Where do you draw the line? Sensibility, subjectivy is a Pandora's box here.

A lot of people would agree to ban the Origin of species. Or the Qur'an. Or the Communist Manifesto.

"If we do not believe in freedom of speech for those we despise we do not believe in it at all."

I can't imagine this being acceptable, I have personal experience of being abused by a pedophile. Is it not supposed to be so devastating since it was done by the "guidelines" in this so called book.Amazon won't be on my shopping list this holiday season.

People shouldn't only boycott, they should return their e-readers, there are others just as good out there that don't make money for pedophiles.

I am an abuse survivor and I will never shop at Amazon again because of this. I have spent many, many dollars with them. I am spreading the word like crazy to boycott this on my Facebook and Twitter and people are agreeing with me in droves. What a horrible thing for Amazon to do. how can they possibly defend this?

I do (or rather did) a lot of shopping on Amazon.com.

Saw your interview with Dr. Phil, and the follow up (after you read the book). Although amazon does not sell pornography as a catagory (ie if item falls within criteria)this is not considerede censoring, not selling a single book because it is objectable would be considered censorship. If amazon could call the book in question pornography then they wouldn't have to sell it. Amazon could decide not to sell any self help books and it would be their choice. They can't pick and choose.

I just don't understand why you are giving this book publicity. I agree with what you are saying, but you are putting this book out there for more people to know about. People can find the same information on the internet, all one would have to do is Google, "how to get away with being a pedophile." This book seems terrible, but it isn't the only place these sick individuals can get their information. However, I do hope Amazon rethinks this decision and takes the book off the market...or better yet, someone get's a hold of all of them and burns each and every one. (PS, LOVE your show!!!)

Selling the book on pedophilia is despicable and beyond belief. Our family, all 43 of us in total, are firm in no longer purchasing any product from Amazon. Our children deserve our protection and they contribute to the severe harm of children by publishing this book. There is simply no defense. Thank you for doing your part to expose this extreme evil.

As I listen to Anderson and Dr. Phil, I am totally sickened and appalled about the selling of this book on Amazon. I have never used Amazon, but I assure you I never will after this documentary. I will also spread the word to boycott with every breath. It saddens me that Amazon has so liitle respect for these innocent children.
