The $200 Million Myth: Join the Live Chat

Tonight, the 200-million dollar myth. The made-up claims that President Obama's trip to Asia is costing taxpayers 200-million dollars a day. More than the daily cost of the war in Afghanistan. Who's spreading such a false story? We're keeping them honest. Plus, Sarah Palin's latest twitter controversy.

3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links

It would be interesting to see how much George W. had spent on all of his trips.

Re: the $200,000,000 day presidential trip. Considering the alleged source of the amount, isn't it possible that the sum is actually 200,000,000 rupees, which converts to roughly $4.5 million?

It isn't just the Republicans that want to put a stop to Obamacare, most of the American people don't like it as well.

I heard that too – Mitch McConnell is not going to work to get this country out of it's economic woes. This all bodes poorly for our government. Their quest for presidential power is greedy and obnoxious.

It's sad to hear so many false statements being made about our President. All of our President's have traveled and it does cost money. While our country was economically falling,,,I recall seeing President Bush traveling all over the world.

I don't know enough about it, Jo Ann...but do CEO's usually? They might. Is there a reason? Thee might be. I doubt it's all 'party time' and free ride, somehow.

Three cheers for the correction on the $200 million myth! Don't let Andrew Card back you down. The only way to deal with the constant lies is with the TRUTH. Thank you.

Maybe the entire trip to all the countries together and all the expenses inclusive is about 200 million.

But again, the $ is very powerful against south asian currencies and hence, I wonder even if the total trip would cost much. Its probably an average of 600$ a ticket to India and another 600$ per person to all other countries. Plus another 200$ a person per day.

So with currency values, I am sure the math is about 100 million$ for the entire trip! Wonder how many $ he will bring back to US in business deals?

@ Janis re: Obama's opponents not quitting until 2012. You are so right. All of this nonsense is directed at getting him out. They will stop at nothing and particularly after Tuesday. They are feeling very powerful but they also know they can't accomplish all the changes they want until he is gone because of his veto power.

    Hello Anderson,

Don't thoses making the claims regarding the cost of the presidential trip to India relize how foolish they look in making statements that the trip would cost $200 million per day! What worries me is the fact that those making the statements are lying...elected officials are lying!

Thank-you for pointing out the truth and keeping them honest!

Do they have an estimated cost for this trip? The government estimates costs to move military personnel and their families every day, I am sure they could come up with an estimate for this.

Romney and Huckabee are well ahead at almost double the popularity polling rate. Palin is #3 in the poll for possible RNC nominee..
Don Lemon of CNN got it immediately; media is hyping her up - not because you want to rather because she is manipulating you all. She is using ANY way to stay in news. Do not let her.
BOTH Bachmann and Palin are staying in the news because you all are letting them. We have so many other big issues. Just let them eat dust.
Meanwhile, something newsworthy may be that Palin's son is discharged from military – I read that in VanityFair article.

Hi AC, I applaud the fact that you are debunking this fraud of a story, but the fact really is that News agencies should not be waiting till PM to address the lies that have distorted our political system. These lies should be challenge rigorously.

  23. Lindsay Curren

Goodness, is there NO neutral agency that emits daily numbers that can be taken as facts on govt spending, including the president's? If no, why not? If yes, why the quibbling?

    Can we move on?

Because Michele Bachman "read" it or saw it on the internet doesn't make it true. She needs to be called to account for SPECIFIC sources rather than just "I read it in the news". The media have to be more assertive about wild charges – ask what "specific" source. Obviously, she would not be able to answer that.

  25. lisal -canada

i must admit that i just about choked when i heard her say something akin to "i read it on the internet so it must be true" ... just about choked...

if this is her logic, then one must question if she believes whatever she reads in print as well – including some of the trashy tabloid stuff

people NEED to keep in mind that there is truth, speculation, opinion AND falsehood all taking up electronic and paper space out there ...

I agree, Sue from Syracuse. Shameful is the right word. Audacious and obnoxious too. These are the people who aspire to power? What horrible models.

    November 4, 2010 at 10:07 pm |
  28. Sue from Syracuse

Sree Nanduru, you are correct. This is such a massive falsehood.
Just because Michelle Bachmann smiles, and keeps repeating herself "confidently" it doesnt make her correct, nor attractive. Falsehood is the worst feature of any person.

I didn't think Obama would have much to say about what it would cost even if it did cost 200 mil. It's national security and taking the mobile white house with him and he didn't decide that – it's been that way for alot of other presidents too.

Looks like they did not get their Corporate-financed talking points today.. Those are sufficiently obfuscated that they cannot even be checked. This time, they got caught. The corporations should be caught as well.

Good evening Anderson and fellow chatty bloggers. When I heard the 200 million story, I was aghast at what kinds of false stories are told about the President. It never ends, starting with the birthers, etc. etc. I heard Fox news people were all promoting this story. Yep, I see Glenn and Rush jabbering.

Obama's opponents are not going to quit until 2012. That irritates me because politicians will be focusing on unseating him rather than taking care of dire economic problems.
