Well, if those packages are shipped from Yemen, why not suspend the shipping services until practices are changed and security upgraded?

Why would Yemen rebels who are largely Saudi national dissidents want to threaten America instead of their focus on undermining the Saudi Royal Family? It seems the last nation they would want to draw into the regional conflict would be America, it just does not add up. Israel or Saudi Arabia is pulling the strings on this imo.

I am curious to know who the intended recipients of the bombs were. What has been their reactions?

    good evening
here is a question if Saudi Arabia was able to drive these people out of the country first how did they do it? second they must know all the key players so why cant we get that info so that we can in a lack of better words cut of the snakes head?
i had no idea that this petn had this much power in such small amounts. this is scary stuff if there are 13 still missing.

please don't ask too many questions about how we learned of these bombs and anything that may help the terrorist re-examine what they did wrong, how they got detected. i worry so about us providing way more than we should to the enemy. i had been in navy intelligence and feel the media needs to be very cautious about "too much information" ...not for keeping it from us but providing too much to those who wish us harm. please, please be careful!

Good evening Anderson, Isabel, Emily, Starr, Megan, Sree, Nicole, everyone.

I think I should know this, but do screening devices detect the presence of explosives or allow screeners by imaging to see the configuration of devices that could be explosives?

How did the Saudis determine the tracking numbers of the packages with devices? That's a very specific tip.

Yes, I have read there is no friendship between the two countries and often lots of issues with the borders. However, how would they still know?

I would imagine that it would be very scary indeed! Do you know the Synagogues that were named as the destination? Any reason why those ones would be singled out?

Al-Qaida has been attacking Americans or American facilaties since the 1990s. kenya, Yemen, 9-11, now this. What is it that Al-Qaida want? When will this stop?
If peace in the middle east between the Palestinians and Israelis why don't we work had on that or expedite that!

The FBI has known about this for 4 weeks. They've been having meetings with UPS drivers giving them pictures of what boxes to look for.

There is no reason that all cargo aircraft cannot meet the same requirements as passenger/cargo combination aircraft for 100% screening of cargo. FedEx & UPS have been fighting this through their companies since 9-11 with two of the biggest lobbying machines in Washington. Remember though that 100% screening means 100% security.

Nina, thank-you for your query, yes swab and computerized sniffers at the airports routinely scan specifically for those compounds. Normally these are all 'nitrogen' based compounds, anything with a high level of nitrogen should trigger a caution signal.

Sounds entirely like a false flag event, created by an entirely different agency to push a nefarious agenda. America is already waging a covert war in Yemen what is the agenda here?

    Very interesting statement!

"I am curious how Saudi knew."
I heard in the reports that Saudi Arabia has their own issues with Yemen already; sounds like they are already keeping an eye on them.

Why if there are still 12 explosive devices/packages out there would the terrorists now detonate them now to destroy the evidence and make their threat credible??

    October 29, 2010 at 10:16 pm |
  18. Sharon Hastings

If these other attacks were trained by the same bombmaker, why didn't they know how to detonate their bombs correctly? It will be interesting to follow this to its end. Were they supposed to just blow up these synagogues? Scary to think there are other bombs out there to be delivered.

Could we build an instrument that could detect Semtex as that is the explosive?

this obviously was a serious security threat – i was wondering if anything could over-ride the pre-midterm political coverage and pull national attention away from politics ... guess this answers THAT question

I live just outside of Chicago. This was very alarming when I first heard about it. It was pretty scarey. It goes to show you that it does not matter where you live. You are not 100% safe anywhere. Its scarey.

Many countries around Yemen; is their influence not greater or positive?

No detonators were found in any of the packages, they would have immediately shown up with a x-ray scan of the cargo. This appears to be an attempt to smuggle a large amount of PETN to select Jewish Rabbi's for questionable purposes.

Interesting to learn that these explosives were supposed to be detonated by using a cell phone. Last time I checked, you can't get cellular phone service on a plane. I would think then that the intent would've been to blow them up while on the ground. Perhaps even on the UPS truck themselves. Can you imagine the panic then? Every citizen would fear UPS trucks throughout the holiday season. Mission accomplished then for the terrorists!

To be bi-partisan..would this be considered a victory for the former Bush Administration? Without our strong relationship created by former President Bush would this intelligence be possible?

I just hope that we can remember Osama Bin Laden's 2004 speech about bankrupting America. His belief is that for every 1$ al-Qaeda spends, the US will spend $1M. We need to decide if we want to be bankrupt and questionably safe or understand that it is a dangerous world.

    October 29, 2010 at 10:07 pm |

We need to design an instrument that can detect small amounts of 'Semtex plastic explosive' as that is the active ingredient in PETN

    Hello everyone,
last night I was so stunned and speechless by this incredible Mr. McCance that I could just watch and wonder, but was not capable to join the chat. But so many of you fellow bloggers have expressed what I was feeling- disgust and outrage! I did not believe a single word of what he was saying. Apology? I did not get it.
And then Breaking News all over the day: Terror threats! There is more bad news out there than an average viewer can digest!
