Anti-Gay Facebook Rant Fallout: Join the Live Chat

What he did shocked the nation. What Clint McCance will do tonight, which so many others don't in a situation like this, won't be easy. McCance, a school district vice-president, who posted very harsh words online about gay victims of bullying who take their own lives, talks only to 360°. Plus, tonight's other headlines.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

I do commend Mr. McCance for coming forward and speaking out. But do I feel sorry for him for the overwhelming response he is receiving? No.

"Everyone" has NOT made statements like his. He thinks the response has been "out of proportion"? The only thing he's sorry for is the fact he's been caught and embarrassed. Did he think nobody would see it on his facebook page? He's too dumb to be on a school board.

    @Jo Ann,
"I am surprised that Facebook would allow him to post hatespeech like that."
That's a great question! Is that sight monitored at all?

@JoAnn...it takes an act of God to get hate speech removed from FB. You would be astounded at the hate groups that post openly on FB. It's absolutely disgusting.

Children need to know that they are loved by their parents no matter what they do and who they are.

Facebook does not moderate hatespeech in general.

That non answer about his kids being gay tells it all.

What rock was this guy under that he didn't know suicide (of teens) was such a big issue?

  11. Kali Skinner - AR

I don't understand why some people are trying to justify what he said. He honestly is probably the most hated man in the U.S. right now, and deserves it!

This is a great interview, Anderson!

The one thing that I disagree with is that the family (especially his children) of Mr McCance should not have to be held accountable or threatened for his ignorant comments.

I haven't heard Mr. McCance say that he didn't mean what he said – he's just said that the words he used were too strong. I at least give him credit for doing this interview.

  16. Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

I am surprised that Facebook would allow him to post hatespeech like that. Why wasn't he flagged?

Plain and Simple – are you aware that it is because of people like you, with attitudes like yours, that LGBT youth have such a high suicide rate, are all-too-frequently bullied, beaten up, and in many cases murderd?

@Mike. Thanks for keeping your head screwed on and "sticking with life." You'll be reflecting on your choices for the rest of your life. Please keep positive people in your life–it makes a big difference.

Which of us has pressed that Send button and wished we had it back? But this is over the top. He clearly DOES feel that way to some extent but just wishes he hadn't said it in such an inflammatory way. He is still dangerous with his beliefs.

I am happy that he is going to resign. Where do these people come from who give being a Christian such a bad name?? I can't believe that his church condones that posting.

Mr. McCance as made many statements about the language he used. Would someone please ask him about his INTENT.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:13 pm |
  22. eduardo

He keeps saying about he is sorry about his "choice of words" and that his "words were too strong" but he hasn't apologized nor even addressed the content of his comments. I'm curious what his answer was if AC asked him what he meant.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:13 pm |
  23. John

He's sorry that he got caught and that the story was picked up. He's not sorry for his feeling or his words.

Very thankful that he's resigning. He brought this on himself.

if he went back and read it and thought it was the wrong thing to post why didn't he delete the comment?

    October 28, 2010 at 10:13 pm |
  27. Janis

I believe him. There are alot of people that think like he does. If he can come on national TV and apologize, maybe there is hope changing other people's perspective on persecution and bullying. They obviously don't know they're doing anything wrong – must be the climate they live in. These awareness programs are doing some good.

  28. Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

@Starr, formerly known as vincent, "It seems fairly obvious that he regrets "language" but not Intent."

I think you are right about that.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:13 pm |
  29. Heather - Spokane, WA

The only bad press is going to be on this man and not the school district. It is not the district's fault that this man is horrible

    October 28, 2010 at 10:13 pm |
  30. Barb

What is this man's view on gay people?

Are you kidding me? This guy is feeling the heat of having been exposed for the hate monger he is. Resigning is the least he should be doing.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  32. Nina

    @ Mike
Thank you for the courage to share your story!

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |

I'm not hearing Clint McCance doesn't actually renounce his opinion, just the words he used.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  34. Lori

Resignation seems like a good idea

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  35. Martha

This is exactly how you handle a bully. Call them out and show them for what they are. Most of the time will back down when they have to stand up by themselves. Also how is Mr McCance a school board official? Instead of using themselves, he wrote "there selves." He needs remedial English.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  36. John

Out of control? Is he kidding? Children killed themself – that's out of control.

    Thank god he's resigning!

Does it sound like he is taking responsibility for what he posted?

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  39. Lynn B.

Good for you, Anderson – really difficult interview & you didn't let McCance get away with the excuses he was throwing out. Can't believe many are feeling sympathy for him-and rightfully so.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  40. Nalini

    Was Mr. McCance on drugs?
That is the question... Is this the apology only because he was caught or is he sincere? That was a lot of hatred being spewed, and he is surprised that it has received this attention..that's it.
He still needs to be terminated, cos that is an abomination.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm |

I truly understand everyone being upset. But its no different from watching sitcoms and movies that carry the same message as McCance. Hypocrites

  42. Berrtha Fox-Dominguez

He said horrible things, and I wish I could have helped him. He never imagined that anyone would listen to his rants, and he was being provocative on line. I think it's a lessoned learned for all of us.

  43. Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Good point, Anderson....... I agree your question!

    October 28, 2010 at 10:11 pm |
  44. Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

Now that he is the target he is upset.

  45. Diana

This guy isn't sorry for or regret how he feels. He is sorry for what he SAID.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:11 pm |
  46. Dave

Are we to believe this guy has had a 24 hour catharsis? His comments were too detailed and too filled with hate.
He sounds more like a man who is not as sorry he said what he's said but very sorry he got caught.
Maybe they should invent a 'rehab' for him so he can claim he's got a problem, fake plea for help & hope this is enough damage control to save his job & future.

    October 28, 2010 at 10:11 pm |
  47. Jack

Good Evening, Anderson. Mr. McCance, have you ever talked to any gay middle school or high school students about what it is like to be them?

    October 28, 2010 at 10:11 pm |
  48. Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA

@Kali. Thank you very much for saying that. Hope work goes well tonight. 🙂

Did anyone notice that he keeps saying that he is sorry for his choice of words! What he said is how he felt. He's sorry everyone nows hes a bigot

    October 28, 2010 at 10:10 pm |
  50. Sue R. Canton MI.

Mr McCance stated that he made some ignorant comments. I have to commend him for appearing on the show,, But I'm thinking that he is just trying to save his job. I think he could be sorry he just got caught. Now he is getting a taste of what it feel's like to be bullied.
