Washington (CNN) - It was the spring of 2001 when Washington and the country first heard of Chandra Levy, an attractive and ambitious young woman who came to the nation's capital from California for an internship with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Just days after that internship ended, the young woman vanished and the search for her arguably played a role in the political undoing of married Democratic congressman Gary Condit, from Levy's home state of California.

Levy and Condit were having an affair, according to Pulitzer prize-winning Washington Post reporter Sari Horwitz, who covered the Levy case and has co-authored a book about it.
