Controlling the Political Message: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Tonight on 360°, they want your vote but they don't want the accountability that comes with earning your trust. Politicians dodging reporters. One even had his security team put a reporter in handcuffs. We're keeping them honest. Plus, a one-on-one exclusive interview with Yoko Ono. She talks about the day John Lennon was killed and the man convicted of the murder.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

I wonder if those that are running and not speaking to the media, if they realize just how bad they look on camera and that they Speaks volumes!

I'm sure there is an increased tendency for many of us, including some press members, to play 'gotcha' and to try to put people on the hot seat (for all kinds of our own reasons, sometimes plainly hostile)...I think that some of it can ultimately do harm to the process of open and transparent communication. Not sure what the answer is...

I think a lot of them are scared of Anderson. He tries to get the truth and Politicians don't like that.

    @Heather-WA

I agree with your post! If we the people, are voting for these candidates, we have a right to know their views.

What Alex C. just said about reaching the largest amount of people and trying to influence people to vote for you, candidates need the press.

The candidates should Not have their views reported the way They want- we need the truth so we know who to vote for.

@Janis-'-Remember months ago, Sarah Palin said don't speak to the media. They must have an approved list – AC, I bet you aren't on it.'

I remember that, it must be popular this time

In a perfect world, the media could be the checks and balances with honest reporting... and it seems that many politicians do not want this! :~)

The cameras have power; it might help one to win the election.

@Heather, that was what I wanted to say.. about the bikers..

There is a strategy behind not answering questions. You have complete (or most) control on what's in the press.
One "bad" interview, has a news cycle of 48 hours over the internet and other media.
Adn you have to put more effort in to bend "it" back..

It seem's like with the technology that we have now it's so easy to catch the politician's during election time behaving badly.

They are scared to face the media and they know they aren't prepared or have something to hide. AND let's not forget that Sarah Palin started this and has since told others not to talk to the media either (or just to Fox).

@Gloria. Yes, let the media be our eyes and ears.

I can see politicians choosing to avoid one program or the other....I think that is any human being's right, to choose to avoid a few venues...but they cannot sidestep all the media except those that are their 'friends'. How do they justify that? it seem to me they are not ready to represent constituents.

If you are going to be in politics you need to learn how to handle criticism

Part of being a politician is being able to stand up bto media scrutiny. That's a very big part of the job. The media is not supposed to be their friend. I consider the media more of a watchdog of society not there to make them look good. They all can hire PR people if their image or message is that controversial.

This election season is crazy...where do they find these people. Why can't they even answer questions??

Good evening Anderson & Team 360.

Hello, David, Isabel, Nichole, Nancy, Megan, Emily, Megan, Mike, Casey, all bloggers.

I can't believe the behavior of Mr. Miller's "security" people of the press. OR the other candidate.

We have a FREE Press! And, these political events are news and therefore should be available to the Press to inform the People of the State they are running for office in.

Unless it's because I'm older and paying more attention to politics,,it seem's to me that these election's are getting more and more dishonest and brutal.

This campaign is really getting too much. It's like media bullying to get reporters to back off. That's not right. If they can't stand the spotlight, then something is fishy.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:03 pm |
  36. Heather - Spokane, WA

If politicians want to be in office they have to be elected by the public, and if they want the public to vote for them they need to talk and answer questions that the public has for them and not run away or have their 'people' talk for them
